Bonne édition parisienne de la traduction par l'érudit allemand Christoph Hegendorph (1500-1540) de la paraphrase de l'évangile selon Saint-Jean attribué à Nonnus après sa conversion supposée au christianisme. Nonnus était un poète égyptien du 5e siècle après J.C considéré comme "le plus notable poète grec épique de la période romaine" (voir Encyclopedia Britannica). Certaines études universitaires récentes contestent cette attribution et désignent plutôt à un imitateur qui aurait composé cette paraphrase à la manière des Dionysiaques, la plus connue des oeuvres de Nonnus. Galen's commentary on Hippocrates' "The Regimen in Serious Illness, " translated from the Greek and edited by Jean Vasses of Meaux (1486-1550). Vasses, one of the most learned and successful physicians of his time, was Dean of the Medical Faculty at Paris, and author of a "Medical Enchiridion" and treatises on urology. The fifth-century BC Hippocratic text is also presented in Latin, accompanied by Galen's commentary in Italics. Galen (ca.130-ca.200 AD), a Greek born in Pergamon, traveled and studied widely before becoming physician to gladiators, and then, in Rome, personal physician to the Emperor Marcus Aurelius. His writings were most influential during the Middle Ages. This translation was used by Brasavola, who edited a complete edition of Galen's works, in his edition of 1546 (Venice, Scotus). Another edition appeared in London in 1563. Woodcut of Father Time on title. Some smudging to first and last few leaves; library marks; ink mark to title. Belle impression en noir et rouge et en gros caractères. Titre encadré orné de scènes de la Création, dans le style de G. Leroy. Cet encadrement est répété en tête des deux autres parties. Rome, Francesco Priscianese, 1542 Folio: Roman type. 17th century sprinkled calf, spine gilt in compartments, Chatsworth book plate. An excellent copy. First edition. One of the very few books from the press of the Florentine humanist and scholar who joined the circle around Cardinal Ridolfi in Rome. An ambitious project had been conceived by Cardinal Cervini to publish the entire corpus of the early Church Fathers: Blado was to print the Greek authors and Priscianese was chosen to publish the Latin texts. The manuscript from which Fausto Sabeo prepared the edition was corrupt, and the little time he could spare from his duties as Librarian to the Vatican meant that Priscianese was left with a mammoth task of correction.

Venitiis Paul Manuce aldi Filios 1542 - In-12 de 126 ff.n.ch., vélin estampé (reliure de l'époque). Seule édition aldine de ces « Corrections » adressées à Paul Manuce, ornée de l'ancre au dauphin (n°3) sur le titre et in fine. Né à Corregio en 1501, Ferrari, philologue, se distingua par son savoir et obtint la protection de plusieurs cardinaux, entre autre d'Alexandre Cesarini, qui le logea dans son palais. Précieux exemplaire de présent de l'humaniste allemand Johannes Caselius offert à son beau-père et ami Andreas Mylius, avec l'inscription manuscrite à l'encre sur le titre : Ll (arissimo) V (iro) Andreas Mylio Johannes Caselius. Andreas M. Mylius (1527-1594) et J. Caselius (1533-1613) furent tous les deux conseillers à la cour de Johan Albrecht, duc de Mecklembourg. Les fonctions de Mylius concernaient l'éducation, la diplomatie et l'administration alors que Caselius s'occupait plutôt de l'université. Tous les deux, vers 1560, s'occupaient également de l'éducation du fils de Johan Albrecht, le futur Johan VIII. Caselius se maria avec la fille de Mylius, Gertrud, et l'oraison funèbre qu'il écrivit pour Mylius fut imprimée à Helmstedt en 1611. Cet exemplaire montre l'amitié et l'étroite collaboration qui existaient entre ces deux importants humanistes, actifs dans le nord de l'Allemagne afin d'y promouvoir la culture. Acquis lors du voyage que fit Caselius en Italie, où il rencontra Paul Manuce, cet exemplaire de présent rappelle l'importance des recherches philologiques à cette époque. Renouard, p. 125. - Im Jahre 1542 erschien JEAN FERNELS (1497-1558) physiologische Schrift "De naturali parte medicinae" in Paris im Druck, also ein Jahr vor Vesals "De humani corporis fabrica" (1543) und vor des Copernicus "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium" (1543). Sicherlich bedeutet Fernels Werk nicht das gleiche für die Physiologie wie Vesals Werk für die Anatomie, aber es hat für rund 100 Jahre das Denken über die Funktionen des Körpers maßgeblich beeinflußt, noch über die Entdeckung des Blutkreislaufs hinaus, und zwar nicht deshalb, weil es so viel Neues enthalten hätte, sondern weil Fernel das gesamte überlieferte Wissen zum Thema der "Res naturales" in einer bis dahin nicht dagewesenen systematischen Ordnung und Konsequenz dargestellt hat. Fernel schreibt in der Widmung, er habe aus den Schriften der Alten das Beste exzerpiert, zusammengestellt, Neues hinzugefügt, Ordnung in das Ganze gebracht ("in unum contuli") und alles klar und sprachrein dargestellt. Das sei weder den Arabern noch dem Galen gelungen. Den ersten Rang unter den fünf Teilen der Medizin nimmt die Physiologie ein, die die Natur des Menschen nach allen Seiten erforscht und untersucht. Seit Fernel datiert die Zusammenfassung der "Res naturales" unter dem Begriff der "Physiologie". Die "natura" des Menschen besteht aus Leib und Seele; daher behandelt Fernel Bau, körperliche Funktionen und Psychologie des Menschen innerhalb der Res naturales. Mehr noch, der eigentliche Grund für die Existenz des Körpers ist allein die Seele; denn "corpus hominis animae gratia conditum est". Alle Teile und Funktionen des Körpers sind daher zum Dienste der Seele auf das zweckmäßigste gestaltet; die Lebens Vorgänge werden von der Seele, keinesfalls vom Körper selbst oder aus sich hervorgebracht - "corporis actio nee a se nee a corpore proficisci" -, die Seele bringt vielmehr die körperlichen Leistungen hervor: "actionum corporis causam esse animam, dazu bedarf sie allerdings der Instrumente und Functiones, die von den Facultates animae betätigt werden. Als Vermittler zwischen Körper und Seele wirken die Spiritus. Der Körper ist also aufgefaßt als eine vom höchsten Schöpfer zum Gefährt und Heil der Seele konstruierte optimale Ordnung von Teilen und Leistungen. Dieses teleologisch-finalistische Konzept nimmt also aristotelisch-galenisches Gedankengut auf und führt es im religiösen Sinne fort.Die Gliederung seiner "Physiologia" lehnt sich an Galen und Avicenna an." Das erste "Buch I behandelt, ohne Neues zu bringen, die alte Anatomie. In Buch II behandelt er die Lehre von den Elementen, in Buch III die Temperamente. Buch IV erörtert die Natur der Körperwärme und die alte Lehre von den drei Spiritus, dem Spiritus naturalis, vitalis und animalis, die als bewegte Spiritus zu dem Spiritus innatus der Gewebe hinzutreten. Dann behandelt er die Facultates animae, die Vermögen der Seele, welche die Körperleistungen veranlassen und sie mit Hilfe der dienenden Instrumente bewirken; das sind die Facultates naturales (Zeugung, Ernährung, Wachstum), die Facultates vitales (Vis pulsifica und Wärme des Herzens) und die Facultates animae mit einer vollständigen Psychologie, gegliedert in Facultas sentiendi, movendi, intelligentiae und moralis. Diese Vermögen bewirken über die Glieder und Organe die Funktionen, also komplexe Leistungen, wie Verdauung, Herztätigkeit, Atmung, Bewegung, Empfindung (Buch VI); das letzte Buch VII betrifft die Zeugung. Die Logik der Darstellung und Begründung ist aristotelisch. Alles ist zweckmäßig im Organismus. Das Leben ist Träger der unsterblichen Seele; das Leben braucht dazu bestimmte Fähigkeiten, z. B. der Bewegung und Empfindung; diese Vermögen benötigen Organe. Organe brauchen Gewebe (einfache Teile), und diese brauchen Elemente, alles ist da "propter necessitatem". Damit ist seine Anwesenheit und Eigenart verständlich. Die Methode der Darstellung schreitet von den Elementen über die Temperamente zu den Facultates und Functiones fort. This is the second Colines' edition of Arboreus' commentary on Aristotle's work "On Interpretation", part of the Organon in which Aristotle argues that a single assertion must always affirm or deny a single predicate of a single subject.Aristotelian studies first began to flourish in the 13th century, and then during the 15th century with the revival in Greek studies there was a massive expansion in interest, with several new editions of the Greek text and Latin translations, as well as a huge number of commentaries. In fact the number of Latin commentaries in the 150 years from 1500-1650 exceeded that of the entire millennium from the time of Boethius to the time of Pomponazzi. The great interest in these commentaries is reflected in the fact that Colines produced a large number of different works, in multiple editions.Provenace. Venitiis Paul Manuce aldi Filios 1542 - In-12 de 126 ff.n.ch., vélin estampé (reliure de l'époque). Seule édition aldine de ces « Corrections » adressées à Paul Manuce, ornée de l'ancre au dauphin (n°3) sur le titre et in fine. Né à Corregio en 1501, Ferrari, philologue, se distingua par son savoir et obtint la protection de plusieurs cardinaux, entre autre d'Alexandre Cesarini, qui le logea dans son palais. Précieux exemplaire de présent de l'humaniste allemand Johannes Caselius offert à son beau-père et ami Andreas Mylius, avec l'inscription manuscrite à l'encre sur le titre : Ll (arissimo) V (iro) Andreas Mylio Johannes Caselius. Andreas M. Mylius (1527-1594) et J. Caselius (1533-1613) furent tous les deux conseillers à la cour de Johan Albrecht, duc de Mecklembourg. Les fonctions de Mylius concernaient l'éducation, la diplomatie et l'administration alors que Caselius s'occupait plutôt de l'université. Tous les deux, vers 1560, s'occupaient également de l'éducation du fils de Johan Albrecht, le futur Johan VIII. Caselius se maria avec la fille de Mylius, Gertrud, et l'oraison funèbre qu'il écrivit pour Mylius fut imprimée à Helmstedt en 1611. Cet exemplaire montre l'amitié et l'étroite collaboration qui existaient entre ces deux importants humanistes, actifs dans le nord de l'Allemagne afin d'y promouvoir la culture. Acquis lors du voyage que fit Caselius en Italie, où il rencontra Paul Manuce, cet exemplaire de présent rappelle l'importance des recherches philologiques à cette époque. Renouard, p. 125. Giacomo Gastaldi is considered as the foremost Italian cartographer of the 16th century along with Paolo Forlani. From Piedmont, Gastaldi established his reputation in Venice and was cosmographer to the Republic of Venice. Gastaldi enjoyed a productive relationship with Giovanni Ramusio, Secretary of the Venice Senate, who used Gastaldi's maps for his Navigationi et Viaggi. Seconde édition publiée par Etienne Dolet, mais la première a avoir été imprimée par ses soins. Elle est selon Tchemerzine, "très rare et très importante pour les nombreuses additions de texte qu'elle renferme : des épigrames, les "Estreines (43 pièces) et diverses autres pièces." L'édition de 1538 qui porte le nom de Dolet, a été imprimée par Sébastien Gryphe. Une lettre de Marot à Dolet reproduite en tête de volume : "Le tord que m'ont fait ceulx, qui par cy devant ont imprimé mes Oeuvres, est si grand & si outrageux, cher amy Dolet, qu'il a touché mon honneur & mis en danger ma personne. Car par avare convoitise de vendre plus cher & plus tost ce, qui se vendait assez, ont adjouté a icellles miennes oeuvres plusieurs autres, qui ne me sont rien." Plusieurs feuillets salis, une déchirure réparée au feuillet 233, quelques lettres ont été refaites en début de ligne, une petite piqûre de vers à travers les quatre derniers cinquième du volume. Bonne édition parisienne de la traduction par l'érudit allemand Christoph Hegendorph (1500-1540) de la paraphrase de l'évangile selon Saint-Jean attribué à Nonnus après sa conversion supposée au christianisme. Nonnus était un poète égyptien du 5e siècle après J.C considéré comme "le plus notable poète grec épique de la période romaine" (voir Encyclopedia Britannica). Certaines études universitaires récentes contestent cette attribution et désignent plutôt à un imitateur qui aurait composé cette paraphrase à la manière des Dionysiaques, la plus connue des oeuvres de Nonnus. The earliest known edition is that of Antwerp, 1535, though a Louvain 1534 edition of which no copy is known, is recorded. Le titre, imprimé en rouge et noir, est orné d'un bel encadrement gravé sur bois. Le catalogue collectif de France ne signale que deux exemplaires de ce volume, tous deux à la réserve de la BN. Sammelband in einem außergewöhnlich reich verzierten Einband des Dessauer Buchbinders Joachim Linck: Die Plattenstempel zeigen Vorderseite das Porträt des Fürsten Joachim Ernst von Anhalt, Rückseite das Wappen von Anhalt (Haebler I, 266, III und XII), umgeben von drei verschiedenen Rollenstempeln (Haebler I, 265, 4, 6, 8). Joachim Linck, Nachfolger seines Lehrers Georg Helt, hatte seit 1537 die Stellung eines Hofbuchbinders Georgs III. von Anhalt inne (siehe Hellwig, Handb. der Einbandkunde II, 38; Thieme-Becker 23, 233). Die älteste Jahreszahl seiner Rollen ist 1526, die auch bei diesem Einband verwendet wurden (ausführlich: Haebler I, 267). Seconde édition publiée par Etienne Dolet, mais la première a avoir été imprimée par ses soins. Elle est selon Tchemerzine, "très rare et très importante pour les nombreuses additions de texte qu'elle renferme : des épigrames, les "Estreines (43 pièces) et diverses autres pièces." L'édition de 1538 qui porte le nom de Dolet, a été imprimée par Sébastien Gryphe. Une lettre de Marot à Dolet reproduite en tête de volume : "Le tord que m'ont fait ceulx, qui par cy devant ont imprimé mes Oeuvres, est si grand & si outrageux, cher amy Dolet, qu'il a touché mon honneur & mis en danger ma personne. Car par avare convoitise de vendre plus cher & plus tost ce, qui se vendait assez, ont adjouté a icellles miennes oeuvres plusieurs autres, qui ne me sont rien." Three Paris-printed works of the 1540s, bound together in attractive tan calf to style with covers decorated in gilt and spine gilt in compartments, all edges gilt. First separate edition of FinŽ's treatise on cosmography. The final two chapters give a practical guide to mapmaking. In the first he gives instructions for making a map of a particular locality, using Southern France as a practical example. In the second he details three methods for the projection of a map of the world on a plane surface, each with diagrammatic explanations. The work is an excellent example of both the illustrative skill of FinŽ, who prepared the illustrations and initials, and the fine printing of Colines. KOEBEL: probably the third edition of this very attractively illustrated work on the astrolabe which was printed in a number of editions, all apparently scarce. Koebel here abandons the old method of dividing the zodiac into twelve equal houses and adopts the more recent method of Peurbach and Regiomontanus. As well as the astrolabe, other scientific instruments are dealt with: the sectional title for this part reads 'Instrumenta Mathematicorum varia, cum eorundem usu. Quadrans optimus totius distinctionem habens. Sphaera materialis Triangulus Geometricus, Baculus Iacob, Umbraculum visorium. Virga Geometrica. Horologion manuale. Astrolabii usus. Noctilabium. Cylindri usus. Tam quo ad politionem, quˆm quo ad usum.' Koebel's work is described in detail in Volume II of Gunther's The Astrolabes of the World. This edition appears to be the third, after editions of 1532 and 1535. NUC denotes it the fourth, with a supposed first edition published in Nuremberg in 1517, but we suspect this to be a ghost. This copy contains the folding plate of astrolabe parts, often lacking, although it wants the folding chart. NUC records four locations for this edition: Cornell, Harvard, Boston Public Library, and the Peabody Institute in Baltimore. With small printer's device (a swan) on title and half-page device on the recto of the last leaf of a swan playing the violin with a Latin poem for Jacobus Iucundus underneath; several interesting tail-pieces. 40 lvs. Second Strasburg edition printed by Jacob Frölich (Jacobus Iucundus), who had published his first edition in 1537 on the basis of the first edition of this Latin School drama: Antwerpen, Johannes Graphaeus for Joh, Steelsius, 1536, following the first performance on 15 September 1535. Cornelius Crocus, born in Amsterdam ca. 1500, is one of the first and most important Neo-Latin poets and humanists of the Northern Netherlands. He was praised by the great scholar Erasmus for his brilliant and pure Latin. As the rector of the Amsterdam Gymnasium (1528-1549) he wrote several Neo-Latin dramas, of which this play ('Joseph') is the most important and best known. Many editions were published, a.o.: Antwerp 1536, 1539 and 1546, Paris, Chr. Weichel, 1537 and 1541, Cologne 1547. The play is about the victory gained by Charles V in Tunesia over the Turcs. Crocus created very clear characters including the Egyptian princess who had tried to seduce the Emperor.Dying to join the Jesuits, Crocus eventually left Amsterdam for Rome in 1549 where he arrived on foot in September. He was received with full honours by Ignatius of Loyola himself, but he died just a few weeks after becoming a Jesuit. Very fine copy with the bookplate of the Bibliothèque du Château des Ormes pasted to the verso of the front cover. Only one copy mentioned in the Dutch central catalogue (NCC): UL-Amsterdam.
