A reasonable copy of a rare medical book. Elyot, Sir Thomas (c.1490Ð1546), humanist and diplomat.ÒElyot's Castel of Helth completes the trilogy of his major works. It is an attempt to summarize the teachings of the ancient Greek and Roman physicians, especially Galen, so that English men and women may understand and regulate their health accordingly. It popularized the theory of the four humours and complexions, which became a basic part of the intellectual make-up of Renaissance Britain, and suggested medicines and treatments for a variety of ailments. Probably based on Elyot's studies with Linacre, it differed from Linacre's own writings, for Linacre translated the works of Galen from Greek to Latin, hoping to make them accessible to doctors but not wishing to allow ordinary men and women to diagnose their own complaints. It was Elyot who provided an accessible handbook in the vernacular.Ó [Oxford DNB]ÒThe Castel of Helth by Sir Thomas Elyot. Original pages browned along margins and sl. stained to title and edges of first gathering, but overall clean, readable and sound, final few leaves have been professionally repaired along outer margin, lower portion of title page reinforced. Very rare. Giglio Gregorio Giraldi (Lilius Gregorius Gyraldus or Giraldus) (June 14, 1479-February, 1552) was an Italian scholar and poet. He was born at Ferrara, where he early distinguished himself by his talents and acquirements. On the completion of his literary course he removed to Naples, where he lived on familiar terms with Jovianus Pontanus and Sannazaro; and subsequently to Lombardy, where he enjoyed the favour of the Mirandola family. At Milan in 1507 he studied Greek under Chalcondylas; and shortly afterwards, at Modena, he became tutor to Ercole (afterwards Cardinal) Rangone. Giraldi was a man of very extensive erudition; and numerous testimonies to his profundity and accuracy have been given both by contemporary and by later scholars. His Historia de diis gentium marked a distinctly forward step in the systematic study of classical mythology; and by these above treatises De annis et mensibus, and on the Calendarium Romanum et Graecum, he contributed to bring about the reform of the calendar, which was ultimately effected by Pope Gregory XIII. Ex-libris héraldique d'Hyacinthe-Théodore Baron au contreplat. Rare édition de ce traité de chiromancie imprimé pour la première fois à Bologne en 1494. Antiocho Tiberti, italien né en Romagne au XVe siècle, fit ses études à Paris où il acquit de solides connaissances en mathématiques, médecine et dans les belles lettres. Mais sa vraie passion était l'étude de la magie naturelle qu'il essaya d'étayer par des raisonnements tirés de ses connaissances scientifiques. Il obtint une grande réputation en tant qu'astrologue. Dans son traité sur la chiromancie, il recherche les relations entre cette science divinatoire et l'astrologie. C'est d'ailleurs le premier à avoir attribué des signes du zodiaque aux différentes parties de la paume de la main. Exemplaire de Hyacinthe-Théodore Baron (1707-1787), docteur régent de la Faculté de médecine de Paris, premier médecin aux armées, bibliophile, auteur entre autres d'une notice chronologique des thèses de médecine soutenues à Paris entre 1536 et 1752, et d'une liste des gradués de l'université depuis 1295. G. Treschel, Vienne (France) 1541 - VG, B&W woodcut of this Fries reduction of the earlier Waldseemuller map. Striking image, showing ancient Palestine divided into the regions for the 12 tribes. Many of the waterways are not configured as we know them from modern maps (i.e. the Dead S ea shows as an elongated lake, etc.). According to Laor's "Maps of the Holy Land" this map was modelled on Vesconte-Sanuto's map of Palestine. This map has no verso text, contrary to earlier editions (first issued in Strassburg in 1522). A few central wormholes have been expertly repaired and are nearly invisible; the image is intact and measures 22x41cm.

EIN RARISSIMUM - HEBAMMENBUCH VON 1541Sehr seltene, frühe deutsche Ausgabe des Rösslinschen "ROSENGARTEN", des ersten gedruckten Hebammenbuches."Rösslins "Rosengarten" ist ein Markstein der Geburtshilfe und Frauenheilkunde geworden, der die Geschichte der Geburtshilfe den Beginn eines neuen Abschnitt festlegt." -cf. Fasbender, p.121".Das schön illustrierte Buch, in vielen Auflagen und Sprachen erschienen, wurde eine "WELTBERÜHMTHEIT" (Diepgen) und war für über 200 Jahre eine anerkannte Authorität. Erstmalig wird die Geburtshilfe selbständig und nicht als ein Teil der Chirurgie behandelt. Besonders interessant ist der "Rosengarten" für die Überlieferung der Kindslagenbilder zur Illustration für die typischen Handgriffe der Hebammen. Diese 16 Holzschnitte umfassende Bilderserie knüpft direkt, ohne orientalische Vermittlung, an die antiken Traditionen an. Die Vorlagen zu den Abbildungen stammen wahrscheinlich aus dem Soranus-Muscio Manuscript (13. Jahrhundert), damals in Heidelberg, jetzt in der vatikanischen Bibliothek aufbewahrt.Der ganzseitige Holzschnitt zeigt die Wochenstube, die Wöchnerin im Himmelbett, zu ihrer rechten Seite bringt ihr eine Frauenperson einen Teller Essen, zur Linken des Bettes ein gedeckter Tisch, zu welchem noch ein Topf gebracht wird, vorn links im Bilde sitzt eine Frauenperson vor einer mit Wasser gefüllten Holzwanne, in welcher ihre blossen Füsse stehen, auf ihrem Schosse hält sie ein nacktes Kind, in ein Tuch geschlagen; im Hintergrund sieht man durch eine geöffnete Tür die Küche. Ein weiterer großer Holzschnitt zeigt eine Gebärende auf dem Stuhl, hinter ihr eine stehende Frau, welche sie hält, vor ihr die Hebamme sitzend und hilfeleistend. Der Holzschnitt auf Blatt XII verso zeigt einen Gebärstuhl.Eucharius Rösslin, der Hebammenlehrer Europas, war ein hochangesehener Arzt, der in Freiburg i.Br., Worms und Frankfurt tätig war, wo er 1526 starb. Der "Rosengarten" half den Frauen, sich richtig auf ihre schwere Stunde vorzubereiten und ihr Leben in Schwangerschaft und Wochenbett, sowie die Pflege des Neugeborenen hygienisch zu regeln. Gleichzeitig diente es der Belehrung der Hebammen. Die vorliegende Edition ist in keiner der großen Sammlungen wie National Library of Medicine, Wellcome, Osler, Cushing, Adams, Pybus Collection, Edinburgh Libraries, Waller, Wolfenbüttel, Josephin. Bibliothek, enthalten. Weder in der umfangreichen 'Hellmann-Collection of early obstetrical books', noch bei der Bonhams-Auktion 1979 in London war ein Exemplar zu finden.Nur ganz wenige Exemplare haben die über 450 Jahre seit ihrem Erscheinen überlebt. Auch an unserem Exemplar ist die lange Zeit nicht spurlos vorüber gegangen. Jedoch wurden alle kleinen Schäden fachmännisch restauriert: Vorsätze erneuert, der Pergamenteinband mußte neu aus altem Pergament gestaltet werden, somit entstand ein sehr schönes Exemplar dieses extrem seltenen Werkes.Very rare edition of this important book. The only work by Eucharius Rösslin, the Elder, is the "Rosengarten". Rösslin's "Rosengarten" is the first printed book dealing exclusively with the subject of obstetrics. It became enormously popular and went through many editions and translations. For nearly two centuries they served as authoritative treatises on obstetrics throughout Europe. There has probably been no medical book in history so widely translated and distributed."The significance of the 'Rosengarten' is not due to its being the first printed obstetrical work, but rather to the fact that its text and illustrations resumed a tradition, broken for almost fifteen hundred years. Nouvelle édition de la traduction de Lorenzo Valla (1406-1457) de l'iliade et de celle de Volaterrano de l'Odyssée. Belle réalisation typographique avec lettrines et caractères Italiques. Marques de l'imprimeur sur les pages de titre et au verso des derniers feuillets. L'édition princeps des oeuvres de Quintus Smyrnaeus formant la troisième partie de notre exemplaire a été publiée par Aldo Manuce à Venise en 1504. §Plein Veau marbré XVIIIe. Dos à nerfs orné. Pièce de titre en maroquin rouge et de tomaison en maroquin vert. Coiffe de tête du tome 1 avec manques, un léger manque à la coiffe de tête du tome 2. §L'Iliade et l'Odyssée appartiennent en fait à deux éditions différentes à la même date, ainsi que les oeuvres de quintus Smyrnaeus (Quintus de Smyrne) et constituent de ce fait un rare ensemble. Tous les traducteurs sont italiens, et ces traductions étaient considérées comme classiques à cette date. Le second volume contenant l'Odyssée renferme également la Batrachomyomachia dans la traduction latine de Aldo Manuce et les Hymnes dans la version de Iodoco Velaraeo. Outre ces oeuvres attribués à Homère, le livre contient la vie d'Homère par Hérodote et par Conradum Heresbachium. C'est dans cette édition que liront Du Bellay, Ronsard... les oeuvres d'Homère. §Quintus de Smyrne ou Calaber (du nom de Calabria ou furent découvert ses manuscrits) est un poète homérique du 2e ou 3e siècle et dont l'oeuvre poursuit la narration de la guerre de Troie, l'action commençant à la fin de l'Iliade. 1541 Lugduni (Lyon) Apud Seb. Rare first edition of this long poem on the myth of Prometheus' creation of woman and the ensuing dramas. This was one of the earliest versions of the myth to appear in literary form. Women, like the contents of Pandora's box are seen as the source of all the ills of the world. The work was very successful and was reprinted and translated. Olivier's invention and style were much admired. Dolet praises his qualities in his prefatory letter addressed to Francois Olivier, the author's nephew. (Reliure de l'époque.) Edition estimée, dont Montaigne possédait un exemplaire. Pour Brunet, elle a toujours été recherchée des collectionneurs et il cite plusieurs exemplaires provenant de collections prestigieuses, dont celles de de Thou et de Heber. C'est aussi le cas de cet exemplaire provenant de Pomponne de Bellièvre. On trouve sa signature sur le titre ("Bellièvre" qui a été anciennement biffé) et ses armes au centre du cartouche central. Pomponne de Bellièvre (Lyon, 1529-1607) a été successivement ambassadeur en Suisse, président au présidial de Lyon, conseiller d'Etat, surintendant des finances et enfin Chancelier de France. Homme cultivé et nourri d'auteurs antiques, Bellièvre jouissait d'une grande réputation de vertu et de probité. Schreiber, The Estienne 67 : "This edition appears to have been a favorite with collectors throughout the centuries, and Brunet records several famous copies, including those of de Thou et Heber." Very rare. Giglio Gregorio Giraldi (Lilius Gregorius Gyraldus or Giraldus) (June 14, 1479-February, 1552) was an Italian scholar and poet. He was born at Ferrara, where he early distinguished himself by his talents and acquirements. On the completion of his literary course he removed to Naples, where he lived on familiar terms with Jovianus Pontanus and Sannazaro; and subsequently to Lombardy, where he enjoyed the favour of the Mirandola family. At Milan in 1507 he studied Greek under Chalcondylas; and shortly afterwards, at Modena, he became tutor to Ercole (afterwards Cardinal) Rangone.Giraldi was a man of very extensive erudition; and numerous testimonies to his profundity and accuracy have been given both by contemporary and by later scholars. His Historia de diis gentium marked a distinctly forward step in the systematic study of classical mythology; and by these above treatises De annis et mensibus, and on the Calendarium Romanum et Graecum, he contributed to bring about the reform of the calendar, which was ultimately effected by Pope Gregory XIII. Pièce de titre en maroquin rouge et de tomaison en maroquin vert. Coiffe de tête du tome 1 avec manques, un léger manque à la coiffe de tête du tome 2. §L'Iliade et l'Odyssée appartiennent en fait à deux éditions différentes à la même date, ainsi que les oeuvres de quintus Smyrnaeus (Quintus de Smyrne) et constituent de ce fait un rare ensemble. Tous les traducteurs sont italiens, et ces traductions étaient considérées comme classiques à cette date. Le second volume contenant l'Odyssée renferme également la Batrachomyomachia dans la traduction latine de Aldo Manuce et les Hymnes dans la version de Iodoco Velaraeo. Outre ces oeuvres attribués à Homère, le livre contient la vie d'Homère par Hérodote et par Conradum Heresbachium. Marvelous image of Girolamo Benzoni, aboard his ship, as he approaches the Caribbean on his voyage to the New World in 1541. Benzoni sailed to the New World in 1541, travelling through the Caribbean, Central and South America, before returning to Spain and then to Italy in 1556. In 1565, the first account of his travels in the New World appeared under the title Historia del Mondo Nuovo, which was translated into English and French over the next 30 years. Among the more entertaining elements of Benzoni's account of his time in the New World is his report of flying fish witnessed by the crew, after sailing west for 14 days out of the Canaries. De Bry's interpretation of this famous passage from Benzoni's account provides a lively image of Benzoni alone, on the deck of his flagship, surrounded by flying fish, with two other sailing ships in the distance, a windhead, several curious sea monsters, and a representation of land (likely intended to represent the New World, since Benzoni's ship is pointed in the direction of land) on the horizon. First and last few leaves soiled, pale dampstain on last 20 leaves, upper corner of first few leaves worn. Eighteenth century panelled sheep, later reback. Signature of Walter Pagel and book label of Bernard Pagel on front pastedown. Extensively annotated in the margins in an early and legible hand, and with notes on four slips of paper bound in; also some short notes in another early hand. First Nuremberg edition (probably the fifth chronologically after two printed at Rome and three at Strasbourg) of the first printed book on chemistry, by “the first chemist” (Stillwell). ”A valuable alchemical treatise that was originally attributed to the Arab Al-Tarasusi Jabir ibn Haiyan, a chemist known as Geber (fl. eighth–ninth century). Recent research has shown that this work was written by an anonymous thirteenth- or fourteenth-century author (pseudo Geber) who possessed more advanced chemical knowledge… This Latin treatise exerted an epochal influence upon alchemists of the later Middle Ages and Renaissance… Geber’s works are very important as they contain the main chemical knowledge of medieval Christendom” (Neville, pp. 508 and 507). The author gives detailed descriptions of apparatus, methods, and the properties of individual metals. The first edition (Rome, 1485) is the earliest printed chemical book cited by Stillwell, who comments: “An important treatise on alchemical theory and practice… Jabir himself may be accredited as the first chemist to whom the term may properly be applied.” This edition is important for being the first to contain the two works ascribed to Geber on metallurgy and the construction of furnaces, and the following six additional works: Roger Bacon, Speculum alchemiae; Richard the Englishman (of Wendover), Correctorium alchemiae; the anonymous Rosarius minor, de alchemia; Khalid ibn Yazid, Liber secretorum alchemiae; Hermes Trismegistus, Tabula Smaragdina de alchemia; and Hortulanus, Tabulam Smaragdinam hermetis commentarius, all of which are probably printed here for the first time. La prefazione di Heronymus Gemusaeus, è in latino, tutto il testo è in greco a piena pagina e molto elegante. Prima edizione rarissima del sec. XVI della celebre opera scientifica, botanica e medica, preceduta solo dall' edizione Aldina del 1498. Il nostro esemplare non porta al frontis il nome del Camerario e la sua prefazione, ma è una variante rara con la prefazione del Gemuseo. Manca a CHOIX, DURLING e WALLER mentre ADAMS e WELLCOME hanno solo l' edizione col Camerario. Qualche lievissima ombreggiatura a poche carte in fine altrimenti esemplare molto bello nitido e marginoso. Nella sua interessante legatura originale che sia all' interno che all' esterno dei piatti conserva frammenti cartacei e membranacei manoscritti del XIV e XV secolo. Ce volume contientent la version latine des œuvres de l'écrivain grec Dionysius Areopagita et divers autres textes relevant du même courant philosophique. Les traductions du grec sont souvent l'œuvre de grands humanistes de l'époque, notamment Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples (1450-1537) et Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499). La publication de ce volume est due à Juan de Brocar, celèbre imprimeur d'Alcala de Henares, qui a rédigé un texte de présentation à Don Juan de Tavera, Cardinal Archevêque de Tolède. Cette imprimerie avait été fondée par Guillén de Brocar, le père de Juan, à qui l'on doit l'impression de la grande "Bible Polyglotte" du cardinal Ximenes. Au cours de la première moitié du XVIs. elle fut un important foyer de rayonnement intellectuel, notamment erasmiste, à Alcalà de Henares. Juan de Brocar y exerça de 1538 jusqu'à sa mort en 1552. EXEMPLAIRE EXCEPTIONNEL, ENLUMINE A L'EPOQUE. Le titre architectural gravé sur bois avec au centre l'image de Dionysius Aeropagita ainsi que 4 grandes compositions gravées sur bois à pleine page qui encadrent les épigrammes et les nombreuses capitales historiées, ont été rehausées à l'époque aux encres de couleurs rouge, or, vert et bleu. Ercolani's treatise addresses the Roman law of interdict, a category of orders or prohibitions issued by a magistrate and addressed to a particular person to give immediate protection to a threatened interest of a complainer. They were also used to protect public interests, such as waterways. The first edition of tis treatise was published in 1569, third and final in 1580. 7 copies located in North America, 2 of this edition (at UC-Berkeley and Harvard Law Schools).
