They show how patterns and conventions were established, and how the following generations built on them in turn. As this body of knowledge accumulated, it became the framework for commercial dealings. Most of these works were intended for the instruction of students and apprentices, or for the use of book-keepers and merchants. The original copies are in the library of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in London, whose holdings in the fields of book-keeping and accountancy are the finest in the world. Most are of the utmost rarity & extremely fragile. Probably the only opportunity to acquire this text in a superbly produced edition, whose original has so rarely been offered for sale in useful condition, and probably never will be again. The 4 Gospels and The Acts of the Apostles marked leaf 1-198; the Epistles and Revelation marked 175-318. Complete with index. With woodcut initial and a wealth of woodcut vignettes. The title and about half of the vignettes with contemporary handcolouring; some beautifully done, some quite clumsy. Full calf binding from c. 1740 with richly gilt spine. Bound for Danish prime-minister Johan Ludvig Holstein (1694-1763) with his coat-of-arms at the top-end of the spine and his initials at the lower spine-end. Spine-ends slightly crackled; corners slightly bumped. A few pages with foxing or marginal brown-stains. Leaf 306 and 316 with tear, the latter with loss of text and some image. Some marginal comments in 16th and 17th century handwriting. * Brunet. Not quite perfect copy of the famous New Testament with commentaries by Erasmus of Rotterdam with an interesting Danish bibliophile provenance.** Johan Ludvig Holstein possessed a library of c. 20000 volumes along with 10000 manuscripts at his manor Ledreborg near Roskilde. He was a deeply religious man who taught himself Greek to be able to read the Gospel in its original language. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Rara e veramente importante prima edizione di questa raccolta dei primi sei libri dell' Eneide in versi sciolti, condivisa poi dal Caro e divenuta classica. I traduttori dei sei libri sono rispettivamente: Alessandro Sansedoni, Hippolito dei Medici, B. Borghesi, B. Carli Picholomini, A. Cerretani e A. Picholomini. Il primo libro porta la stessa inquadratura istoriata del Della Valle "Vallo" del 1529. Circa il valore dell' opera vedi le ben quattro pagine di note e commento in PAITONI e ARGELATI. Antica firma cassata al frontis, qualche rara impercettibile fioritura e un' alone lieve all' angolo delle ultime 4 carte. Peraltro esemplare molto bello nitido e fresco ben completo delle carte bianche, due delle quali contengono scritte e firme dell' epoca. Universitätspolitisch trat er durch die Neubearbeitung der Statuten der Theologischen Fakultät, durch die Neuformulierung der Aufgaben eines Rektors der Universität und die Herausgabe der allgemeinen Universitätsstatuten hervor. Ebenso ordnete er das Universitätsarchiv. 21 mal war er Dekan der Theologischen Fakultät und 9 mal Rektor der Universität. Bis zu seiner Emeritierung am 7. 1. 1605 war Lorichius als Mitglied der theologischen Fakultät deren bedeutendster Vertreter in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts (BBKL V, Sp. 234 - 237). - Ohne Innendeckelbezug u. Vorsatzblätter, Titel und die ersten Seiten mit Mäusefraß ohne Textverlust. Bezug an den Kanten teilweise gelöst. First Dutch translation of this rare and famous work on sundials by Bartholomäus Schultz (Görlitz 1540-1614), whose latinized name is spelled both Schultetus and Scultetus. He studied in Wittenberg and Leipzig and taught some astronomy in Wittenberg. He lived and worked in Görlitz as teacher, judge and mayor. He was a friend of Tyho Brahe whom he met in Leipzig. His main work is Gnomonice de Solariis. - Von allerley Solarien, dast ist, Himmlischen Circuln und Uhren. (Leipzig 1572), in which he discusses sundials on flat surfaces, on the insides of cubes, prisms (six-sided ones) and pyramids, and, finally, on the insides of spheres, cones and cylinders. According to Sotheran, the work is especially interesting for Schultetus's transversal division on the circle, which was afterwards applied by Brahe on his quadrant (see also Dreyer, Tyho Brahe, pp. 20, 330). The first edition was illustrated with woodcuts and the present engraved vignettes must therefore have been made especialy for the present Dutch edition. Sotheran also points out that there exist no German and Latin editions of 1572, but that there is only one edition with a title in Latin and German. Apart from some faint staining, a good copy.

Testo in elegante carattere corsivo, alcune xilogr. alla III e IV parte. Le quattro parti hanno frontis. proprio. Mancano 4 carte al secondo libro (25/26 e 31/32). Esempl. modesto con tracce d'uso e con tarlo all'inizio e in fine. - Opera celebre di vastissima erudizione, apparsa a Parigi nel 1540, molte volte ristampata e tradotta in varie lingue. Questa nostra edizione è molto rara. Non abbiamo trovato alcun riferimento bibliografico neppure in Adams, BM.STC., Moranti, Choix, Graesse e Brunet, che citano altre edizioni. Il Census ICCU registra solo 18 copie in Italia.

First edition of this Latin translation by Johann Bronchorst (Joannes Noviomagus), made from the first edition of the Greek text of Ptolemy (Basel, 1533). Coloniae, impensis Arnoldi Birckman, 1540-1543. - 3 voll. in un tomo in-folio (321x205mm), ff. (6), CCXLII; (4), LXXXVII, (1); (5), CLXVII; legatura coeva p. pelle (rimontata) con ricchi decori a secco ai piatti a candelabra e a motivi floreali e vegetali entro due bordure inquadranti fleuron centrale. Dorso con titolo in oro e nervi rilevati. Impresa tipografica del Birckman incisa su legno replicata ai tre frontespizi e consistente in una cornice architettonica riccamente ornata con al centro due fiere rampanti ed un gallo; siccome il Birckman aveva la sua sede "à la poule grasse", egli aveva inserito tale animale nella propria impresa di stampatore. Numerose iniziali silografiche istoriate. Sottolineature antiche a penna e glosse marginali, egualmente coeve al volume ed in astrusa grafia, a numerose pagine, afferenti al testo di Ruperto. Al verso dell'ultimo foglio di testo della terza opera, antica firma di possesso. Ampi indici precedenti o seguenti ognuna delle opere. Aloni e buniture sparse. La prima e la seconda opera recano la data di stampa del febbraio 1540; la terza quella del 1543. Ruperto di Deutz, nato sul finire dell'XI secolo presso Liegi (o presso Ypres), divenne in giovanissima età oblato dell'abbazia di San Lorenzo della medesima città abbracciando la regola benedettina, per poi esulare, in seguito allo scatenarsi delle lotte per le investiture, nella Francia del Nord insieme con l'abate Berengario, cui fu stretto da grande amicizia. Ordinato sacerdote, nel 1113 si trasferì a Siegburg e nel 1120 a Deutz, sulla riva sinistra del Reno, a est di Colonia, di cui fu nominato abate. Morì nel 1135 o 1136 e fu tenuto in grandissimo conto per l'ampiezza della sua dottrina e per la probità del suo vivere. La prima opera è un commento ai Profeti biblici minori improntato appunto a tale chiave interpretativa; il "De Victoria Verbi Dei" frammischia teologia speculativa e teologia storica; il "De Divinis Officiis" è la sua prima opera teologico-liturgica, inerente alle cerimonie religiose. Le altre due opere mancano all'Adams, che ne cita diverse altre stampe cinquecentesche, tra cui, sempre del Birckman, una del 1529 per il "De Victoria" e, per il commento ai Profeti, edizioni del 1527 e 1534. It is not recorded in Darlow & Moule; OCLC locates only one copy worldwide (Univ. of Michigan); and neither the Library of Congress, the British Library, nor, astonishingly, the Bibliothque Nationale, has a copy (BIBLE, LATIN) 8vo. Title within architectural border. Text in two columns. [8], 506, [6] leaves. GiuntaÕs woodcut device of a crab and a butterfly on verso of final leaf. Period style dark brown blind stamped calf over beveled quarter-sewn oak boards, preserving early bronze clasps and contemporary ink notes on the endpapers, and an early nineteenth- century gift inscription on the front pastedown to John Vanderbilt Jr. of Flatbush (Brooklyn), New York; edges stained red, with early vellum index tabs. Tercera o cuarta edición del apreciado "Isolario" de Benedetto Bordone que incluye las islas del Nuevo Mundo (América) y Zipango (Japón).El "Isolario" contiene un mapa del mundo en proyección oval basado en el que previamente había realizado Francesco Rosselli así como un gran plano de la ciudad de México (Temistitan) anterior a su conquista por Hernán Cortés. Sin embargo, el grabado más importante es un sorprendente mapa de Norte América (Terra de Lavoratore) que está considerado como el primer mapa del continente norteamericano. Incluye además mapas de Cuba, Santo Domingo, islas de Brasil, Java, y Zipango (Japón) considerado como el primer mapa de Japón impreso en un libro. Contiene al fin un importante suplemento acerca de "la nueva montaña de oro descubierta" que no es otra cosa que el primer texto que describe la conquista del Perú por Pizarro. La primera edición se publicó en 1528 por Nicolo Zoppino y una segunda más extensa apareció en 1534. La presente edición está basada en la edición extendida de Zoppino que incluye la Relación de la Conquista del Perú, y se utilizaron para su impresión los mismos tacos para estampar los grabados.Magnífico ejemplar, excepcional, conservado en sus guardas de época y con todos sus márgenes, sin cortar. Maroquin noir, plats dorés d'arabesques, de losanges et de rectangles, avec inscriptions au centre, dos à nerfs orné, tranches dorées. (Reliure de l'époque.) Exemplaire dans une reliure attribuable à Claude de Picques. Une reliure absolument identique figurait dans la première vente Esmerian (N°96) sur un Ovide, imprimé aussi par Simon de Colines en 1541. On sait aujourd'hui qu'elles furent réalisées pour le marquis Jean d'O et de Maillebois, premier capitaine des gardes écossaises de François 1er, Sénéchal héréditaire du comté d'Eu et Grand Maréchal de Normandie. Le décor de cette reliure est manifestement influencée par celles des grands bibliophiles de ce temps, Grolier et Mahieu. Le premier plat porte le titre de l'ouvrage : "M. T. CIC. EPISTOLAE." et le second, la devise : "TU TIBI IPSE FORTUNA". Cette devise, était celle des Franconville, dont le marquis d'O était l'héritier par sa femme. Belle marque gravée de Colines "au Temps" sur le titre. Ex-libris manuscrit sur un feuillet de garde : "De Breüilly, 1659". Handwriting is a versatile medium that has always allowed individual scribes the opportunity for self-expression, despite the limitations of the pen and the finite number of possible movements.The purpose of this study is to focus on the writing of scribes from late antiquity to the beginning of the sixteenth century, and to identify those features which are a scribe's personal contribution to the techniques and art of handwriting. The book opens with three chapters surveying the various environments in which scribes worked in the medieval West. The following five, based on the author's Lyell Lectures at the University of Oxford, then examine different aspects of the subject, starting with the basic processes of handwriting and copying. Next come discussions of developments in rapid handwriting, with its consequent influence on new alphabets; on more formal 'set hands'; and on the adaptation of movements of the pen to produce elements of style corresponding to changes in the prevailing sense of decorum. The final chapter looks at the significance of some customized images produced by handwriting on the page. The epigrams are, for the most part. in elegiac couplets modelled on Ovid and Catullus and depict life in his day. Later full leather with raised bands and gilt titling and decorations on the spine. 207 numbered pages. Of added interest are the two book plates: 1: The Right Hon. Anthony Earle of Kent: 1702. 2:Thomas Philip Earl de Grey, Wrest Park. Condition: When this book was rebound it was trimmed and the edges decorated. The binding is barely holding as the hinges are cracked. Some pen on the title page and pen notes on one of the rear free end papers. The body of the text is acceptably clean. 111mm x 73mm. An inverted V shaped piece torn from the foot of Hiv, just touching wood engraving at the foot of the page. Several pages misnumbered, but collates correctly. Lib, IV has unobtrusive waterstains at the head of many pages. A paper fault in the margin of AAiii affects one letter of text and another on IIiii does not affect the text. SSiv and TTi -iv are supplied from a smaller copy of the 1551 edition. TTiv of the 1540 edition is present but trimmed or supplied from a slightly smaller copy. Bound in 19th century Italian quarter calf with vellum tips and pastepaper sides. Newly rebacked, spines gilt and old marbled endpapers preserved. Otherwise clean, crisp copies with wide margins. One of the great maps of South American and the Southern part of North America and the Caribbean. The map appeared in the 3rd Part of De Bry's Grand Voyages, illustrating the accounts of the voyages of Johann van Staden and Jean de Lery during the 1540s and 1550s. The cartography of North America is based upon Jacques Le Moyne's map of Florida, which De Bry published in 1591, making this the second appearance of Le Moyne's cartographic information on a printed map. A masterful engraving of what was then all of Spanish America, including the southern United States. South America is based on the 1587 Peter Martyr map and works by Gastaldi. The beauty of De Bry’s uncommonly intricate engraving is evident. De Bry’s Grand Voyages, an illustrated collection of accounts of the Americas, defined the early European picture of the New World. A very nice example of the first state, with ample margins on 3 sides and a narrow lower margin, but without any loss of printed image. Mit 1 Holzschnitt-Globus auf dem Titelblatt, 50 teils blattgroßen Text-Holzschnitten, davon 4 mit beweglichen Teilen und Holzschnitt-Druckermarke. Dunkelbrauner, moderner Ganzlederband. - Gutes, breitrandiges Exemplar mit den selten unversehrt erhaltenen beweglichen Teilen. Es handelt sich hier um eine frühe Ausgabe von Apians Hauptwerk. Der Text wurde bearbeitet von Gemma Frisius, der auch zwei eigene Beiträge zum Buch verfasste: "Libellus delocorum describendorum ratione" (Bll. 47v - 53v), in dem er als erster das Prinzip der Triangulation zur Landvermessung beschreibt, und sein "Usus annuli astronomici" (Bll. 54r-60v). Zugleich ist das Werk ein wichtiges, frühes Americanum mit Beschreibung des neuen Kontinents auf Bl. 31r. und Aufzählung der amerikanischen Inseln auf Bl. 44r/v. Vier der Holzschnitte sind mit insgesamt 8 beweglichen Scheiben und Zeigern ausgestattet, einer davon ist eine Weltkarte in Polprojektion. Der Holzschnitt auf Bl. 11v. ist zwar mit Anker und Bindfaden versehen, wurde aber Church zufolge nie mit beweglichen Teilen ausgestattet. Illustré de nombreuses figures sur bois gravées par Hans Galatin et Jakob Kollenber, qui représentent des portraits de personnages historiques, des batailles ou des vues de ville. L'auteur, originaire de Rottweil s'installe à Berne en 1505 où il devient le médecin officiel de la ville. Nombreuses annotations anciennes, légère trace de brûlure sur 3 pages avec petit manque de texte, petite galerie de vers dans les fonds. Bon exemplaire. -

La prima opera presenta 8 carte non num., 4 cc. n.n.+ 48 numerate (da 5 a 52); la seconda opera presenta 4 carte n.n.+ 116 carte numerate da 57 a 176+2 non num. finali, (di cui p. 57- p. 82 di testo, p. 83- p. 106 con l'atlante stellare con ill. f.t a piena pag. di stelle, da p. 107, numerata erroneamente 103 alla fine con tavole di calcolo astronomico.Vignette allegoriche ai frontespizi con il motto "sotto la fe' del ciel al'aer chiaro. Tempo non mi parea da far riparo", incisioni silografiche di figure sulla sfera nel testo, iniziali istoriate. Piena pelle rossa dell'inizio del XX sec. con dorso a quattro nervi e scomparti con intrecci a rete e filetti dorati; piatti con triplo filetto a secco e ricchi cantonali. Titolo impresso in oro su tassello. Postilla manoscritta al verso dell'ultima carta. Discreto esemplare con alone marginale su circa metà del libro. Margine corto in testa, tracce di sporco superficiale.Tracce d'uso a cerniera ant. e spigoli oltre ad un graffio al piatto sup.Prima edizione di una delle più importanti, note e diffuse opere astronomiche del Rinascimento. Piccolomini descrive terra, pianeti e stelle, di cui il libro è considerato il primo atlante completo a stampa, con 47 (malnumerate 48, mancando la 24 "Equuleus" nella num.) belle tavole a piena pagina, in cui per la prima volta furono usate le lettere per indicare le stelle, sistema poi adottato da Bayer e, attraverso di lui, da tutti i moderni astronomi. L'autore, erudito senese della celebre famiglia (1508-1578), insegnò filosofia a Padova, prima di trasferirsi a Roma, fu poi arcivescovo di Patrasso e dal 1574 assistente dell'arcivescovo di Siena. Scrisse numerose opere letterarie prima di dedicarsi a commenti sull'astronomia classica e medievaleNorman Cat 1696, (per l'ediz. 1559): "Alessandro Piccolomini, Archbishop of Paris, was an early popularizer of science who wrote his astronomical treatises in the vernacular in order to extend scientific knowledge beyond the confines of church and university. Als Quelle dienen die Berichte von Saga Za-'ab, dem äthiopischen Gesandten am portugiesischen Hof, der in de Goes einen Mentor der äthiopischen Anliegen fand.
