Wittenberg, Joseph Klug 1539 - Wraps are stiff paper dabbled with brown paint. Laid paper title panel on cover is handwritten and quite unreadable; photo available. Armorial bookplate of playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan is on inner cover. Small ink name at bottom edge of title page. The book has eight leaves on laid paper, the last one blank. One has a nice watermark. Justus Jonas accompanied Martin Luther to Worms in 1521 and was appointed, by the elector of Saxony, professor of canon law at Wittenberg. During Luther's stay in the Wartburg, Jonas was one of the most active of the Wittenberg reformers. Giving himself up to preaching and polemics, he aided the Reformation by his gift as a translator, turning Luther's and Melanchthon's works into German or Latin as the case might be. He was busied in conferences and visitations during the next twenty years, and in diplomatic work with the princes (Ency. Brit.) Wittenberg: Peter Seitz d.Ä., 1539.. Octavo. 151 x 99 mm. [8], CCCIIII Blätter. Lagensignaturen: A-Z8, a-q8 (fol. q8 verso weiß). Mit figürlich-ornamentaler Holzschnittumrahmung des Titels, zahlreichen zierlichen Holzschnittinitialen. Handgefertigter blindgeprägter, bräunlich eingefärbter Pergamenteinband der Zeit auf drei Doppelbünden und Holzdeckeln, Auf den Deckeln außen eine ornamentale Rolle mit Rosetten und Blattwerk, das Mittelfeld mit Streicheisenlinien, kleinen Blütenstempeln sowie fleuralen Ornamenten; handgestochene Kapitale, eine intakte Messingschließe, Reste der zweiten.. Erstmals 1536 erschienene deutsche Ausgabe der wichtigen zweiten, völlig neu bearbeiteten Ausgabe von Melanchthons aus dessen Römerbrief-Vorlesungen entstandenen "Loci Communes" und zugleich eines der Hauptwerke der jungen Reformation, das von Melanchthon seit dem Erstdruck 1521 immer wieder abgeändert und wesentlich erweitert wurde. Zugleich handelt es sich um Justus Jonas' bedeutendste übersetzerische Leistung, der damit viel zur Verbreitung der Reformation im deutschen Sprachgebiet beitrug. "Belehrt durch den Heiligen Geist erkannte er [Melanchthon] als erster in den Paulusbriefen den systematischen Aufbau der Erörterungen zur Rechtfertigung (...) und legte dies der Kirche dar. (...) Das Buch liegt ja vor und befindet sich in aller Hände. Diese Schrift, die er anfangs 'Hypotheses theologicae', später 'Loci theologici' nannte, hat er mehrmals durchgesehen und erweitert, immer besser unterrichtet aufgrund langer Beschäftigung mit diesen Inhalten, aufgrund seiner Erörterungen, seiner Lektüre und seiner Frömmigkeitspraxis." Heerbrandts Gedächtnisrede auf Melanchthon in: M. Beyer u.a.: "Melanchthon deutsch". Leipzig, 1997. I, Ss. 23 f. Justus Jonas (Jodocus Koch, 1493-1555), Sohn eines Nordhausener Ratsherrn, studierte kanonisches Recht zu Erfurt, wo er sich dem Kreis um Mutianus Rufus und Eobanus Hessus anschloß, und zu Wittenberg bei Henning Göde. Durch Erasmus (Allen Ep 985) beeinflußt wandte sich Jonas der Theologie zu. 1521 begleitete er Luther auf den Wormser Reichstag, im selben Jahr wurde er Propst des Allerheiligenstifts und Professor des kanonischen Rechts zu Wittenberg, wo er 1521 zum Doktor der Theologie promoviert wurde, mehrmals war er Rektor der Wittenberger Universität. Als Mitarbeiter und Freund Luthers gehörte er zu den wichtigsten Organisatoren des reformatorischen Kirchenwesens, verfaßte mehrere Kirchenordnungen und führte 1541 die Reformation in Halle durch, von wo er 1547 durch den Schmalkaldischen Krieg vertrieben wurde. Er floh nach Hildesheim, kehrte zwei Jahre später nach Halle zurück. 1546 hielt er in Eisleben die Leichenpredigt für Luther. Zuletzt war er als evangelischer Geistlicher in Regensburg und Eisfeld tätig. Jonas war ein exellenter Übersetzer lateinischer Schriften Luthers und Melanchthons. "Jonas hat neben Luther und Melanchthon den dritten Platz unter den Wittenberger Reformatoren eingenommen. Man darf ihn wohl den treusten Anhänger des Reformators und den getreusten Wahrer lutherischer Theologie nennen, ohne daß er dabei seine humanistische Vergangenheit verleugnet hat" (Walter Delius: "Justus Jonas", p. 111). Einband etwas fleckig, Ecken bestoßen, teils etwas berieben, Rücken erneuert. Titel etwas fingerfleckig; innen leicht gebräunt, wenige Blätter fleckig, anfangs und am Schluß mit kleinem Wasserrand, winziger Wurmgang im weißen Rand einiger Lagen. Mit vereinzelten Marginalien und Unterstreichungen einer sauberen zeitgenössischen Hand sowie einer späteren. Besitzeintrag von 1737 auf Titel unten, ein weiterer Eintrag eines Adam Huberinus, datiert 1563, auf dem letzten Blatt verso. Selten. - - - Contemporary blindstamped vellum over wooden boards, three raised bands, one clasp, remains of the other one, rebacked. Some browning, some contemporary and later marginal annotations, lightly waterstained. A good copy. - - - BM STC 613 - Kuczynski 3436 (gleich kollationierende Ausg. von 1537). [16] ff., 319, [1 (blank)] pp. Justinus (3rdcentury A.D.) is known solely by his Historiarum Philippicarum libri XLIV, which he describes in his preface as a collection of the most important and interesting passages from the voluminous, but now lost, Historiae pillippicae et totius mundi origines et terrae situs, that Pompeius Trogus wrote during the era of Augustus. This very nice Renaissance edition was edited and has a preface by Simon Grynaeus. In addition to the text, there are an extensive index, four full-page woodcut maps of parts of the ancient world, and Grynaeus's extensive commentary. The main text is printed in roman with a good scattering of woodcut historiated initials and is accompanied on the same page by Grynaeus commentary and notes in a smaller italic. His preface is printed in a larger italic face. This copy has interesting, early, but now somewhat faded marginalia in a red or sepia ink. The marginalia is scattered and is at times heavy, other times light; in some sections, it is non-existent. A rare edition: No copy traced via OCLC; VD16 locates only three copies in Europe. VD16 T2056. Full rich brown calf old style: Round spine with raised bands, accented in gilt rule; author and title lettered on cream-colored spine label; fillets in blind extending onto covers from each band to terminate in trefoils with blind double fillets beyond. Small rent in upper inner area of title-page with a very old and good repair on verso. Library name stamped on lower edge of closed book.

(il n. 330 è ripetuto), 1 c. con lo stemma della repubblica di Lucca inciso e 31 cc. contenenti un indice manoscritto aggiunto nel sec. XVII; legatura novecentesca in pergamena rigida. Titolo inquadra" Si tratta del primo libro stampato a Lucca nel Cinquecento nonché della prima edizione della rinnovata compilazione degli Statuti della città decretata nel 1527 sulla base del testo del 1446. Questa nuova stesura rimase tuttavia interrotta a causa di tumulti politici e fu ultimata solo nel 1538. A quel punto però, dato che a Lucca mancava da quasi 40 anni una tipografia, per la stampa degli Statuti si dovette chiamare il bolognese Giovanni Faelli. Molte interessanti osservazioni e giunte marginali, stratificatesi in vari periodi successivi, arricchiscono la presente copia. Belle reliure aux plats estampés d'une plaque répétée montrant Saint-Jérome, accompagné du lion, au pied de la croix. Cette plaque est entourée d'un légende et porte en pied l'inscription : "Gandavi in edibus frm " : Gand [Gent] dans la maison des frères [Hiéronimites]. Les Hiéronimites prirent Saint Jérôme pour patron, tout en suivant la règle de Saint-Augustin. Provenance rare. Nous n'avons pas retrouvé d'autres reliures de cette provenance dans notre documentation (Goldschmidt, Gumuchian...) "Les élégances de la langue latine" de Valla, publié pour la première fois en 1471, se répandit dans toutes les écoles d'Europe et servit, en quelque sorte, de code à l'enseignement pendant tout le XVIe siècle. Ex-dono manuscrit de l'époque, ou un peu plus tardif, sur la page de garde de "Gerardus Albertus" à "Cornelius (?)". Coins usés et fente sur 3 cm à une charnière. Bel exemplaire. Moreau 1523. Cm. 30, pp. (12) colonne 1484 pp. (38). Marca editoriale in xilografia al frontespizio e ripetuta al colophon (Minerva: donna con lancia, elmo e scudo con sopra la testa di Medusa. Accanto una civetta) e molti capolettera figurati. Solida ed elegante legatura del tempo in piena pergamena rigida, dorso a nervi con titoli manoscritti. Qualche rara arrossatura e forellini di tarlo limitati al margine bianco delle ultime carte. Bell'esemplare, marginoso e in ottimo stato di conservazione. Il marchio tipografico al frontespizio e' inoltre ben dipinto da mano coeva, cosi' come parti di alcuni capolettera nel testo. Imprimatur manoscritto in chiara grafia su tre linee alla base del frontespizio. Bell'edizione, ampiamente commentata. Manca a molta bibliografia consultata.

Erstmals 1536 erschienene deutsche Ausgabe der wichtigen zweiten, völlig neu bearbeiteten Ausgabe von Melanchthons aus dessen Römerbrief-Vorlesungen entstandenen "Loci Communes" und zugleich eines der Hauptwerke der jungen Reformation, das von Melanchthon seit dem Erstdruck 1521 immer wieder abgeändert und wesentlich erweitert wurde. Zugleich handelt es sich um Justus Jonas' bedeutendste übersetzerische Leistung, der damit viel zur Verbreitung der Reformation im deutschen Sprachgebiet beitrug. Justus Jonas (Jodocus Koch, 1493-1555), Sohn eines Nordhausener Ratsherrn, studierte kanonisches Recht zu Erfurt, wo er sich dem Kreis um Mutianus Rufus und Eobanus Hessus anschloß, und zu Wittenberg bei Henning Göde. Durch Erasmus (Allen Ep 985) beeinflußt wandte sich Jonas der Theologie zu. 1521 begleitete er Luther auf den Wormser Reichstag, im selben Jahr wurde er Propst des Allerheiligenstifts und Professor des kanonischen Rechts zu Wittenberg, wo er 1521 zum Doktor der Theologie promoviert wurde, mehrmals war er Rektor der Wittenberger Universität. Als Mitarbeiter und Freund Luthers gehörte er zu den wichtigsten Organisatoren des reformatorischen Kirchenwesens, verfaßte mehrere Kirchenordnungen und führte 1541 die Reformation in Halle durch, von wo er 1547 durch den Schmalkaldischen Krieg vertrieben wurde. Er floh nach Hildesheim, kehrte zwei Jahre später nach Halle zurück. 1546 hielt er in Eisleben die Leichenpredigt für Luther. Zuletzt war er als evangelischer Geistlicher in Regensburg und Eisfeld tätig. Jonas war ein exellenter Übersetzer lateinischer Schriften Luthers und Melanchthons. "Jonas hat neben Luther und Melanchthon den dritten Platz unter den Wittenberger Reformatoren eingenommen. Man darf ihn wohl den treusten Anhänger des Reformators und den getreusten Wahrer lutherischer Theologie nennen, ohne daß er dabei seine humanistische Vergangenheit verleugnet hat" (Walter Delius: "Justus Jonas", p. 111). Einband etwas fleckig, Ecken bestoßen, teils etwas berieben, Rücken erneuert. Titel etwas fingerfleckig; innen leicht gebräunt, wenige Blätter fleckig, anfangs und am Schluß mit kleinem Wasserrand, winziger Wurmgang im weißen Rand einiger Lagen. Mit vereinzelten Marginalien und Unterstreichungen einer sauberen zeitgenössischen Hand sowie einer späteren. Besitzeintrag von 1737 auf Titel unten, ein weiterer Eintrag eines Adam Huberinus, datiert 1563, auf dem letzten Blatt verso. Marca editoriale in xilografia al frontespizio e ripetuta al colophon (Minerva: donna con lancia, elmo e scudo con sopra la testa di Medusa. Accanto una civetta) e molti capolettera figurati. Solida ed elegante legatura del tempo in piena pergamena rigida, dorso a nervi con titoli manoscritti. Qualche rara arrossatura e forellini di tarlo limitati al margine bianco delle ultime carte. Bell'esemplare, marginoso e in ottimo stato di conservazione. Il marchio tipografico al frontespizio è inoltre ben dipinto da mano coeva, così come parti di alcuni capolettera nel testo. Imprimatur manoscritto in chiara grafia su tre linee alla base del frontespizio. Bell'edizione, ampiamente commentata. Manca a molta bibliografia consultata.

Tercera edición española de una de las obras más importantes tocantes a la historia de España, con interesantes noticias para la historia de América, su descubrimiento y conquista. Se publicó primeramente en latín en 1497, a la que siguieron ediciones también latinas en 1530 y 1533, todas impresas sobre caracteres romanos, mientras que para las ediciones en español (1530, 1533 y la presente de 1539) se utilizaron tipos góticos a varios tamaños.Los tres primeros libros o capítulos comprenden la descripción de varias ciudades de España, y los cuatro restantes se ocupan de relaciones de los hechos notables de distinguidos varones. En el libro se habla de los Reyes Católicos y del descubrimiento de América. A partir de la primera edición la obra cayó en censura, suprimiéndose algunos párrafos, pero añadiendo sin embargo una biografía de Hernán Cortés y una relación de los primeros viajes a las Indias y costumbres de sus habitantes.Las ediciones en español como la nuestra, al contrario que las latinas de 1530 y 1533, no sufrieron censura, por lo que contienen el texto íntegro, aunque como apunta Palau si debieron sufrir algún rigor pues los ejemplares son rarísimos. La obra contiene además un vocabulario de voces vulgares antiguas con su equivalencia en vascuence.Ejemplar suavemente lavado, generalmente en buen estado, algunas restauraciones marginales. Nice grouping of these three famous children's books, abridged adaptations by Charles Estienne [1504-1564] of Lazare de Baïf's scholarly treatises on Roman antiquities. Charles began to prepare the works while employed as private tutor to Lazare's son, Jean Antoine de Baïf, the future poet. First published by Robert Estienne in 1535-37, these are considered to be "the first books produced specifically for the entertainment (unlike school-books) as well as the edification of a juvenile readership." (Schreiber) The first deals with various types of vases, drinking vessels, and receptacles used by the Romans, the second with ancient Roman dress, including sections on carpets and rugs and colours of wools and clothing, and the third with ancient ships. The first printed map devoted to California and the Southwestern U.S., from the first atlas devotedsolely to America. One of the map's most interesting features is the depiction of many of the fabled mythical places in the region, including the 7 cities of Cibola, Septme ciuitaum Patria, shown around a lake, out of which flows a river which empties into the Gulf of California. The 7 cities originated in from a narrative of Fray Marcos de Niza in 1539. The lake was based upon Espejo's rescue party in 1582, sent to locate 3 missing Franciscan Missionaries. Much of the nomenclature originates with Coronado. The map is largely based upon Plancius' world map of 1592. The Tropic of Capricorni is incorrectly shown. There is only one state of the map. Minor tear at lower centerfold, just entering the printed image, otherwise a nice example of this seminal collector's map. Burden 106, Wagner 188, Wheat 29. Le philosophe et historien Arrhianos ou Flavius Arrianus (Nicomèdie, ca. 95-Athénes, ca. 175) avait été gouverneur de la Cappadoce. Disciple d'Epictéte, c'est lui qui rédigea l'enseignement de son maître. - This is Dodoens's last and most comprehensive botanical work, incorporating material from a number of his earlier books, including the Cruydeboeck. Dodoens has made here an attampt at an explanation of the parts of the plants, and he defines the flower with some hint of the relationship to the fruit. He helped to forward the growing interest in classification which had begun to be evident as early as 1539. Dodoens (c. 1517-1585) was the first Belgian botanist and a contemporary of Plantin. He studied at Louvain, and visited the universities and medical schools of France, Italy and Germany, eventually qualifying as a doctor, becoming physician to the Emperors Maximilian II and Rudolph II, before he became professor of medicine at Leyden. -Nissen 518. (220) lvs. ((a)8, b-z8, A-D8, E4). 28-29 lines. Got. type. Unrecorded variant of one of the three Antwerp editions that were published in the same year as the original edition by Joos Lambrecht at Ghent in 1539: the first printed account of a so-called 'Landjuweel', a rhetorician festival. The book describes the 'landjuweel' organized in Ghent in June 1539. It was the first time that the texts of the plays were published immediately after the festival. The success of the book was so great that it became a model for later publications in the same genre by publishers in the Southern Netherlands in the second half of the sixteenth century. The most outspoken characteristic of this festival in Ghent is the manner in which the religious ideas of the time are expressed. The texts breathe the spirit of the Reformation and the book certainly contributed to the spread of the new religious ideas. It was quite amazing that Charles V gave permission for these festivities. The actual performance of the 'landjuweel', however, did raise his wrath and he severely punished the city of Ghent for this festival full of heresy. The 'landjuweel' of the city of Ghent was reason to question the religious orthodoxy of several chambers of rhetoricians. In 1540 the buying, selling and even reading of the book was forbidden by a Placaet, which generally aimed at all Lutheran and Mennonite thought. Probably this prohibition has also to be considered in the context of the many conflicts the city of Ghent had with the central government and Charles V.Possibly as a result of both, the success of the publication and its prohibition, there were no less than at least three further editions of the texts published in the same year; not in Ghent, however, but in Antwerp (NK 1927, 1928 and 3890), probably by the printer Matthias Crom who at least from 1640 on was living 'int huys van Delft' (the house of Delft). The sequence of the three editions is not certain and the differences are minimal. Our copy belongs to the NK 3890 edition of which there are only three defective copies known, containing an important variant (also occurring in some of the copies of the other two editions) in the colophon on p. (220)r: 'xxv. Octob.' in stead of 'xv. Octob.' So, our present book is the only complete copy and an unrecorded variant of the NK-3890 edition!The present 'landjuweel' was organized by the chamber 'De H. Drievuldicheyt' of Ghent and there were 19 participating chambers with 19 plays giving an answer to the central question of the festival: "What is of the most comfort for somebody dying?" (Welc den mensche stervende meesten troost is). Winner of the festival was the famous chamber 'De Violieren' of Antwerp with its motto "Wt ionsten versaemt". After the winning text of the Antwerp play, follow the texts of the second, third, etc. price winners: Wijnoxberghe, Thielt (chamber De Rose), Loo (Ambacht Veurne), Brussels (chamber Den Boec), Courtrai (chamber S. Barbara), Leffinghe, Bruges (chamber De H. Geest), Meesen, Ypres (chamber Alpha ende Omega), Nieuwkercke, Nieuwpoort (chamber De Doorne Crone), Arkel, Thienen, Meenen, Caperijcke, Oudenaerde (chamber De H. Geest), Edinghe, Deynse. Till far into the 16th century these play were known for their provocative heresy and as one of the first signs of the developing sense of revolt against the centralistic Habsburg/Spanish authority. Ben conservato all’interno (lievi aloni margin.), con una nota manoscr. autografa che testimonia il dono del presente libro al celebre studioso e collezionista Roberto Almagià, da parte dell’editore modenese Formiggini, nel 1922. Bel frontespizio xilografico, ornamenti xilografici all’indice degli autori, e numerosi capilettera xilografici da Anton Woensan von Worms. Pp. (88 d cui 3 bb.), 549, 1 b., (26 nn., di cui l’ult. con la bella marca). Pregevole edizione dell’opera più importante sulla geografia (prima di Tolomeo), vera miniera di notizie storiche ed erudite. L’ aut. visse attorno alla seconda metà del I sec. a.C. in Cappadocia (l’odierna Turchia), e dopo redatto una Storia in 43 libri (nessuno dei quali è pervenuto fino a noi) compilò anche Geografia in 17 libri (pensata come complementare dell'opera storica), che ci è pervenuta per intero, salvo alcune parti mancanti del libro VII. maison de Pierre de saincte Lucie dict le Prince pres nostre Dame de Confort, Lyon 1539 - 8 feuillets pour le titre imprimé en rouge et noir au verso duquel figure une planche à pleine page gravée sur bois représentant un roi sur son trône entouré de sa cour, la table, 171 feuillets à deux colonnes en caractères gothiques. Reliure lyonnaise de l'époque (circa 1550) en veau orné d'un fond de pointillés dorés sur lequel se détache un très riche décor à la cire constitué de rinceaux et d'arabesques multicolores, dos à nerfs orné sur le même principe, tranches dorées et ciselées. Rare édition originale de la traduction en français réalisée sur l'original italien, alors que les éditions précédentes avaient été réalisées à partir d'une première transcription en latin. Ce texte est non seulement important dans l'histoire de l'agronomie, mais il l'est également pour celle de l'hippologie. En effet le neuvième livre est entièrement consacré à ce sujet et aborde le dressage, les soins ainsi que les maladies et leurs remèdes. Le contenu de ce chapitre en particulier est précieux pour deux raisons : la première est qu'il fait le lien entre les connaissances vétérinaires des anciens hippiâtres grecs et latins, et la maréchalerie qui commence alors à se développer au seizième siècle pour prendre son véritable essor à partir de la fin du dix-septième siècle ; la seconde raison tient au retentissement dont il jouira depuis le moyen âge (comme en témoignent l'existence de plusieurs manuscrits), jusqu'à la fin du seizième siècle, puisque son influence restera très longtemps reconnaissable dans la plupart des ouvrages édités ensuite. Mennessier abonde dans ce sens, il accorde une grande importance aux écrits de cet auteur et reconnaît leur modernité au point de trouver les remèdes d'hippiatrique donnés par Crescens bien supérieurs à ceux que prodigueront deux siècles plus tard les maréchaux qui lui succéderont. L'auteur est né à Bologne en 1230 et commença la rédaction de ce texte alors qu'il était âgé de soixante-dix ans ; il fit corriger son manuscrit par Fra Amerigo da Piacenza. Les douze parties qui constituent ce traité concernent l'agriculture, la fertilité du sol, les vins, les arbres, les jardins et même la fauconnerie et la chasse. Le texte composé en caractères gothiques est illustré de belles gravures sur bois ; la première, à pleine page, est placée au dos de la page de titre imprimée en deux couleurs, et représente un monarque sur son trône entouré de sa cour, les suivantes représentant des scènes du travail des champs, une scène de distillation et une vue de chasse au faucon. Cette édition rare a été magnifiquement établie dans une reliure lyonnaise à la cire de l'époque indemne de toute intervention ou de restauration postérieure. Les nombreuses couleurs composant le décor sont parfaitement conservées et mises en valeur par le fond criblé constitué de pointillés dorés, la tranche est ciselée et a été dorée à l'époque. L'exemplaire est protégé par une boite moderne en plein chagrin. Très bel exemplaire avec deux ex libris manuscrits à l'encre rouge sur le titre faisant état d'appartenances lyonnaises, cachet de la collection Huzard au dos du titre. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Suggestivo frontespizio xilografico con l’immagine del commentatore (Ruggero da Barletta) che riceve il testo della regola dal Santo, entro inquadratura architettonica, ripetuta al verso dell’ultima carta, al cui recto sta una piccola xilografia di soggetto agreste, sotto il colophon. Elegante edizione con testo entro commento in 2 corpi div. In carattere rotondo, con grandi capilettera xilografici su 8 linee di testo. Cc. (4), 190 (ma 191), manca l’ultima bianca. Robert Winter, Basilae 1539 - 22 feuillets non chiffrés pour la préface de Simon Grynaeus, la table des chapitres, 551 pages pour le texte et la marque de l'imprimeur au verso du dernier feuillet. Peau de truie estampée à chaud sur ais de bois, dos muet à trois nerfs orné de rinceaux estampés, fermoirs en cuivre dont un est cassé. Editio Princeps du texte grec des Géoponiques constitué d'une suite de fragments de textes écrits par les hippiâtres grecs de l'antiquité et rassemblés au dixième siècle sous le règne de l'empereur Constantin porphyrogénète. Imprimée en latin pour la première fois à Paris par Blaublom pour Simon de Collines sur demande de François Ier, cette édition est la première jamais imprimée en caractères grecs et ce à Basle, sous l'autorité de Grynaeus. L'ouvrage est divisé en vingt livres qui se subdivisent en courts chapitres dont les auteurs cités sont Africanus, Anatolius, Apulée, Berytius, Demogeron, Democrite, Didyme, Denys d'Utique, Diophnae, Florentinus, Leontius, Pamphile, Sotion, Varron, Vinvadonius, Zoroastre, Hippocrate, Hierocles, Theomneste, Pelagonius, Didyme et surtout Apsyrte, considéré comme le père de la science vétérinaire. Ce texte est d'une importance considérable car ses principes feront école dans tout le bassin méditerranéen ; ils seront à la base des médecines vétérinaires byzantines et arabes qui essaimeront en occident par la Sicile, l'Italie et la civilisation arabo-andalouse et dont on retrouvera bon nombre de principes dans Ruffo et Rusius. Rare exemplaire incomplet du titre dans une reliure estampée datée de 1539. Les plats sont ornés d'un décor constitué d'encadrements enfermant des figures bibliques représentatives de la Réforme, le plat supérieur présente un portrait de Jean Frédérique premier dit le Magnanime (1503-1554), et le plat inférieur un portrait de Frédérique III le Sage (1463-1525) sur le modèle du tableau peint par Dürer, et juste en dessous, un portrait de Luther dont il fut le protecteur. - 10 x15, ril. coeva piena pergamena, esemplare fresco, l'edizione è suddivisa in quattro parti, ognuna con proprio frontespizio. La prima è la vera e propria RATIO che riunisce tutte le regole per prefetti, rettori, professori; è di pag. 173 + index. La seconda parte "Ordinationes praepositorum generalium" regole comuni a tutta la società (istruttori, moniti generali, ordinazione dei libri, principi di confessione e carriere nella società) pag. 146 + index. La terza parte "Instructiones ad provinciales et superiores societatis" (tutte le regole date dalla VII congregazione ai facenti parte la Compagnia; esse riguardano il noviziato, le missioni e la promozione degli studi); è di pag. 112 + index. La quarta parte "Claudii Aquavivae instructio pro superioribus" (le istruzioni del Superiore che pubblicò la presente Ratio, riguardanti esecuzioni, spirito, preghiera, obbedienza, castità) è di pag. 48 + index. La società di Gesù nacque il 24 giugno 1539, con a capo Ignazio di Loyola, che elaborò la prima Formula Istituti, di soli cinque punti, proposta al Papa Paolo III che la approvò il 27 settembre 1540 con la Bolla Regimini militans Ecclesiae, donando al nuovo ordine religioso il nome di Compagnia di Gesù, con il compito di "occuparsi del progresso delle anime nella vita e nella dottrina cristiana e della difesa e propagazione della fede". L'approvazione delle Costituzioni dell'Ordine è del 1558, voluta dallo stesso Loyola (morto peraltro nel 1556), che intendeva così regolare l'organizzazione interna in ogni ambito, benché lo stesso primo superiore non intendesse istituire all'interno della Compagnia corsi d'istruzione. La ratifica definitiva della "Ratio atque Institutio studiorum Societatis Jesu" avviene sotto il superiorato generale di padre Claudio Acquaviva (1543-1615), nel 1599. Nel 1616 le scuole dell'Ordine sono 372, con 13.112 studenti, numeri impensabili per il tempo. La Ratio viene ritoccata dalla VII congregazione generale del 1616, e da allora il testo rimane sostanzialmente invariato fino al 1832. Questa edizione del 1635 contiene sia le istruzioni di Padre Acquaviva che le conclusioni della Congregazione generale, ed è perciò una preziosa e ravvicinata summa del pensiero e delle opere dei GESUITI. Questa che presentiamo è la prima edizione apparsa dopo la pubblicazione della nuova Ratio nel 1616, a seguito della Congregazione, e risulta oggi presente in sole quattro biblioteche italiane.

The designs of the woodcuts are very attractive. Most are unsigned, though some carry the initials "I.A." They are encompassed in an ornamental border. The half-title is surrounded by an elaborate ornamental border in similar style. Jost Amman (1539-1591) was employed as artist by the publisher (and artist) Sigismund Feyerabend. The present series of biblical illustrations was first published in the Luther Bible of 1565, also published by Feyerabend. The New Testament woodcuts, with the exception of those in the Book of Revelations and of the individual authors, have been almost entirely left out. Some staining; waterstaining upper and lower margins; some underlinings and marginal annotations; title-page and pastedown with ownership annotations in brown ink; binding slightly rubbed; ties missing.Apart from defects mentioned, a good copy of this rare edition with attractive illustrations by Amman.
