Rattle Snakes: Their Habits, Life Histories and Influence on Mankind
      - Hard Bound, (2 Vols. Set), Vol. 1 : 30 tables, 207 illustrations, Vol. II: 19 tables, 57 illustrations. (Their habits, life histories and incluence on mankind vols. I and II), This book is written to assemble and survey our present knowledge of rattle Snake habits and life histories. It is intended of reference rather than as a popular natural history of the rattlers, being, perhaps, too extensive and detailed for the latter purpose. But as it includes numbers of field observations form varied sources, it is hoped that it may aid in the correction of some of the dubious accounts long current in the popular natural histories; and, further, that it may encourage renewed investigation and observations respecting those phases of rattlesnake life now imperfectly understood or unknown. ESTIENNE, CH.
Paris, Robert Estienne, 1536. Sm.8vo. 19th century half brown morocco, spine gilt, red painted edges (L. CLAESSENS). With woodcut printer's device on title. 96, (16) pp. Second edition "recognitus et auctus" of one of the first real children's books, first published in 1535. Charles Estienne (1504-1564), was at the time employed as private tutor to Jan Antoine de Baïf, son of the humanist and diplomat Lazare de Baïf (ca. 1496-1547). Estienne planned to publish a series of books, especially written for children's enjoyment. Of course the books were instructive as most adult reading was at the time, but they were intended for children's entertainment, not mere school books they should learn by heart. The first books were abridged adaptations for children of Lazare de Baïf's scholarly monographs on Roman antiquities with French glossaries added, the first on Roman dress, and the second on Roman vessels. The present third children's book however, was from Estienne's own hand, based on original information, drawn from his own great interest in botany. The book gives the names and descriptions of plants and trees, with French translations of botanical terms, and a short Latin-French dictionary. Charles Estienne was a member of the famous Paris family of scholar printers and he was still very young when he finished his studies as doctor of medicine. As tutor to Lazare's son he travelled to Germany and Italy where he met distinguished scholars, including Paul Manutius. Charles remained Roman Catholic, so he became responsible for the printing office at Paris when his Protestant brother went in exile to Geneva, from 1551 to 1561. Charles Estienne, or Carolus Stephanus, printed some beautiful books, including some excellent works on his own fields of learning, medicine, botany and agriculture. For the latter works the present children's book on plants and trees had been the first preamble. Fine copy.
[Burgos: J. de Junta], 1536 - Second edition of the fourth (and rarest) part of the important and influential ÒAbecedario espiritualÓ by the Andalusian mystic Francisco de OsunaÕs (ca. 1492- ca. 1540). Published in six separate parts between 1525 and 1554, OsunaÕs work on spiritual devotion was one of the most widely read mystical texts of the 16th century; the third part of the ÒSpiritual AlphabetÓ, on the mystical union with God, was an inspiration to no less than St. Teresa of Avila. It has remained a classic from the great age of Spanish mysticism. This fourth part of OsunaÕs work, ÒLey de amor sanctoÓ, treating the Òmysteries, questions and exercisesÓ pertaining to spiritual love, was first printed in Seville in 1530, and here again by the Spanish branch of the Giunta press (ÒJuan de Junta florentinoÓ) in Burgos. Both editions are very rare; OCLC locates only one copy of each Second edition. Small 4to. Title page printed in red and black within woodcut ornamental border, numerous woodcut capitals, some historiated. 206 leaves (some misnumbered). Contemporary vellum. Spine chipped, small repaired hole in title page, not affecting text, some occasional faint dampstaining, not unsightly. Occasional marginal notes, near contemporary notes on rear endpapers. OCLC: 65198651 locates one copy (Newberry Library); not in Adams.

JAVELLI GIOVANNI CRISOSTOMO
CIVILIS PHILOSOPHIE AD MENTEM PLATONIS DISPOSITIO - MORALIS PHILOSOPHIAE PLATONICE DISPOSITIO. VENETIIS, IN OFFICINA AURELIJ PINCIJ [ANDREA ARRIVABENE], 1536.
Testo bicolonne, eleganti capilettera ornati in xilografia. Manca all'Adams e a STC Italian Books.

The chief inspiration for Vogter's handy little treatise was Hieronymous Brunschwig's Chirurgia (1534) and the title-page vignette (a man contemplates the application of a remedial paste to his diseased leg, while the doctor or apothecary's assistant is distracted from his job by the view through the open window) is very reminiscent of illustrations from that renowned work. Although principally an oculist, Vogter also covers many other aspects of medicine in this work, including dentistry, urology, gynaecological complaints, plague, and wounds. Vogter plied his trade in Dillingen, a small town in Bavaria. His work was obviously popular at the time and like other such early works on popular medicine, it has become increasingly difficult to find in any edition. Durling 4688 (imperfect, as is their copy of the first edition); no other location recorded in NUC or OCLC. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Augsburg: Heinrich Steiner, 1536. - Small 4to (197 x 140 mm.), ff. [iv], lxxvii. Large engraved vignette on title. Browned, soiled and stained throughout, several pages with repairs to lower margins, one leaf (xxxvi) torn from head to toe and crudely repaired with loss of a few letters. Modern quarter vellum, marbled sides. This rare early German work of popular folk medicine, first published in 1531, is here found in third edition. An epic poem of the story of Christ in elegant Latin verse composed at the instigation of Pope Leo X with the idea of popularizing a subject traditionally shrouded in legend and mystery. The author, Marco Girolamo Vida, Bishop of Alba (c.1489-1566) was considered one of the best neo-latin poets of his time. He is best known for his poem on the game of chess. Cardano, Girolamo.
De malo recentiorum medicorum medendi usu libellus. GM 5370.
Octavio Scotto, 1536., Venice: - First Description of Typhus & a Rickettsial Infection Cardano, Girolamo (1501-76). De malo recentiorum medicorum medendi usu libellus Eiusdem libellus de simplicium medicinarum noxa. 8vo. 105, [7]pp. (last leaf blank). 146 x 97 mm. Modern limp vellum, 16th century style. Faint staining on first & last leaves, slight browning, some printed glosses minutely cropped, but still fine. Small old armorial stamp on title & colophon. A few 16th century annotations. Venice: Ottaviano Scoto, 1536. First Edition. G-M 5370. The first description of typhus, and of a Rickettsial infection. Cardano called it "morbus pulicaris" or "flea-like disease" because the spots in typhus resemble flea-bites. The description is found in De malo recentiorum medicorum medendi usu, which translates as "On the bad practices of modern physicians." Not distinguishing typhus from measles is the thirty-sixth "fatal error" of the physicians. De malo was Cardano's first book; it sold very well, except among the physicians whose colleague Cardano wanted to become. Cardano's criticisms, however, put sufficient pressure on the Milan physicians that they offered him some concessions, and this in turn opened the way to triumph for Cardano, who rose to the second most prominent physician in Europe after Vesalius. The book is extremely rare; the great medical collectors had later editions (Waller and Cushing) or none (Osler). Ore, Cardano (1965)12-13. Major 161-64. Durling 841. Wellcome I 1277. 13193 [Attributes: First Edition]

It was the standard authority for several decades and often reprinted. Like many books of its kind, Eirenarcha offers a unique perspective on the society that produced it. This is evident in the descriptions of detailed indictments for such offenses as killing a man through witchcraft, bewitching a horse, raping a child or maid (the age of distinction was ten), hearing a Catholic mass, practicing usury and operating a bowling alley. First published in 1582, The Duties of Constables is a companion volume to Eirenarcha.
