Venise In Aedibus Aldi, et Andreae Soceri 1533 - Petit in-4 de 50 ff. non chiffrés, 295 ff. chiffrés 1 feuillet blanc contenant la marque de l'imprimeur, maroquin rouge, dos orné à cinq nerfs, double encadrement doré sur les plats, roulette dorée sur les coupes, dentelle intéreure, tranches dorées, ciselées et peintes (reliure du XVIIIe siècle). Edition aldine de ce recueil des trois grands traités latins relatifs à l'agriculture, ceux de Caton, Varron et Columelle, auquel fut ajouté le traité des arbres de Palladius. Publié pour la première fois en 1472, Alde reprit le texte en 1514 en le faisant précéder de tables qui en facilitent l'utilisation. Dans cette édition les Enarrationes priscarm vocum, et annotationes de celle de 1514, sont arrangées en tables assez amples, quant au texte, il est à peu près le même sauf un petit nombre de corrections prises de l'édition des Junte de 1521. Giunta device on last (otherwise blank) page. Modern morocco. Rare Lyons edition of this Latin redaction of one of the prime sources on the early Christian Church by Geoffroy Boussard (1439-1522), professor of theology at the Sorbonne, and university chancellor in 1487. The original Greek text was first published only eleven years later by Estienne (1544). Eusebius Bishop of Caesarea (165-340 AD), known as “Father of Church History”, discusses the lives of the first successive bishops and their seas, the writings of Christian theologians, the great heresies, the Jews, and the early martyrs. Book I contains a detailed life of Jesus Christ; book X closes with Christ’s death. The editor, Boussard, represented his university at the Council of Milan in 1511; he also published treatises on the celibacy of priests (1505), and an interpretation of the Seven Penitential Psalms (1519). Nouvellement imprime a Paris par Philippe Le Noir 1533 ca - Petit in-4 (18 x 13 cm) de (6)-126 ff., maroquin vert janséniste, dos orné à nerfs, triple filet à froid sur les plats, dentelle intérieure, tranches dorées sur marbrure (Trautz-Bauzonnet). Recueil de trois textes médiévaux dont le dialogue de Placides et Timeo composé à la fin du XIIIe siècle ; un abrégé du De Sphera Mundi de Johannes de Sacro Bosco, moine et philosophe anglais du XIIIe siècle dont le traité, publié en 1472, est resté célèbre comme le premier ouvrage d'astronomie qui ait été publié en Occident depuis la chute de l'Empire romain ; une traduction par Simon de Compiègne du Computus manualis de l'astronome et poète latin du XVe siècle Anianus, sur les cycles solaires et lunaires ainsi que les fêtes mobiles. Une première édition de ce recueil fut publiée vers 1504 à Paris pour Anthoyne Verard sous le titre de Cuer de philozophie ; Denis Janot et Philippe Le Noir en donnèrent une nouvelle édition à Paris en 1530 sous le titre S'ensuit le Cuer de Philosophie. Impression en caractères gothiques, titre imprimé en rouge et noir. Bois gravé sur le titre et 58 bois dans le texte. De la Bibliothèque de Mr. Armand Bertin avec son ex-libris ; ex-libris « Maurice Burrus Député du Ht Rhin. MCMXXXVII ». Bel exemplaire dans une sobre reliure de Trautz-Bauzonnet. Absent à la BN de France, aux catalogues français et à la British library un exemplaire à Oxford et un au Hollis catalogue de Harvard (même collation) qui possède en outre un exemplaire de 1506 et un autre de 1549. Oxford annonce 19 feuillets d'index, le feuillet supplémentaire ne pouvant être que la vignette de l'éditeur, il est possible partant que celle-ci manque dans notre exemplaire et celui d'Harvard. Titre dans un encadrement gravé avec la vignette de l'éditeur. Plein parchemin contemporain. Dos muet. Une pliure aux coins des feuillets d'index sur quelques feuillets. Traité de droit sur le patronage. Le patronage nous a été légué par les romains, le patron était le protecteur de l'esclave envers lequel il avait des droits par extension il désignera toute relation entre un maître détenteur de l'autorité et un élément dépendant de lui (cas du mariage, des relations commerciales.). (40) lvs. Rare fourth edition of these three sermons by the reformed theologian and follower of Luther, Johan Brenz(en) or Brentius (1499-1570), one of the leading protestant theologians of his time. He found protection with Ulrich Duke of Würtemberg and later with his successor Duke Christoph. At their wish he composed the so-called 'Confessio Wütemburgica' (ed. 1552: Confessio Virtembergiae), was present at the Council of Trente, and reformed, together with other scholars, the University of Tübingen. His collected works were printed in eight volumes in Tübingen, 1576-1590 and Amsterdam, 1666. The first edition of these sermons appeared in 1529 in Augsburg, printed by Heinrich Steiner, the second: Nürnberg, Friedrich Peypus, 1532, the third: Wittemberg, Hans Lufft, 1532. With full-page woodcut of an astronomical globe on verso title, and large woodcut figure in text. (28) leaves.. Rare first edition of a treatise on the making and working of an astronomical globe by the German astronomer Johanus Schonerus, or Schöner (1477-1547). The work was later mostly jointly published with his other work "De usu globi astriferi", with the same woodcut of an astronomical globe on title. Cf. "Rare Astronomical Books in the San Diego State Univ. Library", nr. 170, with reproduction of this woodcut, in an edition Antwerp, 1548. Recueil de trois textes médiévaux dont le dialogue de Placides et Timeo composé à la fin du XIIIe siècle ; un abrégé du De Sphera Mundi de Johannes de Sacro Bosco, moine et philosophe anglais du XIIIe siècle dont le traité, publié en 1472, est resté célèbre comme le premier ouvrage d'astronomie qui ait été publié en Occident depuis la chute de l'Empire romain ; une traduction par Simon de Compiègne du Computus manualis de l'astronome et poète latin du XVe siècle Anianus, sur les cycles solaires et lunaires ainsi que les fêtes mobiles. Une première édition de ce recueil fut publiée vers 1504 à Paris pour Anthoyne Verard sous le titre de Cuer de philozophie ; Denis Janot et Philippe Le Noir en donnèrent une nouvelle édition à Paris en 1530 sous le titre S'ensuit le Cuer de Philosophie. Impression en caractères gothiques, titre imprimé en rouge et noir. Bois gravé sur le titre et 58 bois dans le texte. Cologne, Johann Soter, 1533. - Sm.8vo. Modern half vellum. With woodcut printer's mark on title and large woodcut variant printer's device on verso of last leaf. (8), 176 lvs. Interesting edition of the Latin school grammars of Diomedes and Donatus by the German humanist and teacher Johann Caesarius (Jülich 1468 - Cologne 1550). Caesarius seems to have taught at Deventer in 1508, but then he travelled with one of his pupils, the Count Von Nuenar, to Italy where he studied Greek at Bologna. From 1510 he is settled at Cologne as a free teacher and soon his lectures on Greek and Latin authors become famous. Many German noble families sent there children to him, among others the Count of Stolberg, to one of whose sons the present grammar is dedicated. Caesarius sympathised with the uncoming Reformation and was befriended with Spalatin and Melanchton, but he sided with Reuchlin and Erasmus and never broke with the Catholic Church. His pupils included famous humanists, like Mosellanus, Agrippa von Nettesheim, Johann Bullinger, etc. The present school grammar is not just a re-edition of the still popular grammars of Diomedes and Donatus, but they are completely reworked after the new humanist ideas by Hermann Buschius, and changed at will to produce a well readable text. Both grammars are treated separately, the Donatus, on rhetorics, added after the Diomedes. The book is well produced, adorned with some beautiful woodcut initials, and entirely printed in a fine Italic type. First published in 1526 the schoolbook was republished, after the present edition of 1533, again in 1536 and 1541, but all editions are extremely rare. (56) lvs. First and probably only combined edition of the famous schoolbook on the art of poetry by Johannes Despauterius, or Van Pauteren, a Flemish grammarian (1460-1520), and a school book on the same subject by Johannes Murmellius (1480-1517), a famous Dutch humanist, poet and teacher, and author of one of the most popular Latin primers, the "Pappa Puerorum". That both school books were published together is proven not only by the continuous signatures, but also by the fact that the half-title for Murmellius' book is printed on verso of the last text-leaf of Despauterius' book. Murmellius's lessons on writing poetry include the musical scores for several forms of poetry, for descant, tenor, alto and bass. The book of Despauterius was also used at the Jesuit Colleges in the Spanish Netherlands, and included according to Porteman the teaching of emblematic verse, which required specific metres and which demanded a gifted mastery of all sorts of poetic techniques for its elements of surprise and puzzling. This type of verse was unknown in classical poetry. It is an Aeolic verse known from the late classical metrical theory, especially from the book of Servius "De Centum Metris", which was inserted in Despauterius' book. A variety of elaborate woodblock initial letters including some with naked humans and mystical creatures.Bound in new half black calf and marbled boards, edges in red. Extremely fine condition with full marginal notes. Minor damp stains on the lower right hand margins of the first 52 leaves not affecting text and occasional thin damp stains on the right hand margins of a few other pages again not affecting text. Two small worm holes affecting the margins of only 4 leaves, no foxing or rust spots, etc. A few marginal inked notes. One other copy more closely trimmed located in the Airola library in Naples. Segunda edición, segunda tirada. La presente edición de esta obra fue compuesta por Miguel de Eguia en 1530, contando un total de 10 folios para la portada y preliminares y 175 folios de texto. Cayó inmediatamente en censura y se suprimieron los folios 128 a 175 que contenían las biografías de hombres ilustres de España. Una vez destruidos los folios 128 a 175, se reimprimieron los preliminares y el folio 128, con el colofón fechado en 1533. Los ejemplares son raros. Obra bien impresa, con bellas letras capitulares y animada disposición del texto. La portada es de gran riqueza artística y es sin duda una de las más bellas salidas de las prensas españolas en el primer tercio del XVI.Como consta en el encabezamiento del primer folio de preliminares, la presente edición se mandó expurgar de acuerdo con el "Indice de Libros Prohibidos y a Expurgar" que mandó publicar la Inquisición en 1707. "Esta corregido conforme al Expurgatorio del año de 1707 por Comisión del Santo Inquisidor General D. Gregorio Nieto". La expurgación afecta algo menos de 15 líneas de texto, perteneciendo al capítulo que habla de los Judíos.Consta la obra de un total de XXII Libros: tratan los primeros de la división física y geográfica de España, con sus minerales, agricultura y otras facultades así como la extensión de sus territorios y una pormenorizada descripción de ellos. Habla de los diferentes pueblos que pasaron por la península como los romanos, los moros o los godos. A partir del Libro octavo describe las Provincias del Reino, principalmente Portugal, Castilla y Aragón. En los Libros XIX y XX se trata extensamente del reinado de los Reyes Católicos Fernando e Isabel, así como diferentes aspectos de su gobierno y la composición del reino en aquellos momentos, con un capítulo dedicado a las Islas Canarias y otro a las nuevas Islas y Tierras del hemisferio recién descubiertas (América) por ¡Pedro Colón?! El Libro XXI trata de la toma a los moros de la ciudad de Granada.Ejemplar muy limpio y con generosos márgenes, la portada está profesionalmente restaurada en los márgenes, sin afectar al texto; un folio con pequeña falta en el margen superior, también sin afectar. Ejemplar muy ligeramente lavado y reencuadernado con su pergamino original. "Contains also the 'Hortulus aoemnissimus' of Strabus Gallus (806? - 849). This and the first three items are in verse, the 'Medicinae laus' being Erasmus's 'Encomium' versified by Eobanus" (Osler). Helius Eobanus Hessus (1488-1540), an eminent German humanist as well as friend and correspondent of Erasmus, lectured on classics at the University of Erfurt. "In 1523 Eobanus took up the study of medicine, hoping to alleviate his increasing financial hardship. While they did not lead to a medical degree, his efforts produced a widely read poem, Bonae valetudinis conservandae praecepta (Erfurt: J. Loersfeld 1524)" (Contemporaries of Erasmus I, p. 435). Numerous woodcut initials. Gothic letter, 25 lines. (3), CLXXXX ll. [i.e., 194; f. LXIIII is followed by five unnumbered leaves, and resumes with f. LXVI]; on quire signatures, see below. 4°, late-nineteenth-century full morocco with the binder's ticket of J.B. Simon (see below): covers gilt, spine richly gilt, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, edges rouged. Spine somewhat faded, some wear to extremities, front joint starting at top. Internally a fine, wide-margined, unwashed copy. Two leaves with insignificant marginal repairs, not affecting the text. Censored by the Inquisition (see below). Extensive early annotations in margins of title-page. First edition in Portuguese. Third book to be printed by the Augustinian Canons at the monastery of Santa Cruz: the high quality of the typography and typesetting make this a most unusual example of early Portuguese printing. João Galharde, born in France (Germain Gailard?), probably began his career of over forty years as a Portuguese printer in Lisbon, in 1520. From 1522 to 1530 he was the only printer in the country. In 1530 he established the first printing press at Coimbra, at Santa Cruz, publishing a single book there on 9 August: the @Repertorio do espelho da concsciencia. Galharde lingered in 1531, producing five additional known works while initiating the canons into the art of printing. The press remained active until 1577. The translator of the @Espelho, Fr. Braz de Barros, was Prior of Santa Cruz, reformer of his order, and cousin of the celebrated historian João de Barros. The reforms of Fr. Braz de Barros and the introduction of printing paved the way for the transfer of the seat of the University of Lisbon to Coimbra in 1539. D. João III appointed the Prior of Santa Cruz perpetual chancellor of the University, and Coimbra soon became the chief Portuguese center for the study of the humanities. In this copy a dozen passages were censored by the Inquisition, ranging from a word or two scored to an entire passage: the most extensive example is just over eleven lines. The scoring is in all instances neat, the ink does not affect the condition of the paper, and in a few instances the text can still be made out. We know of three variations in the signatures among different copies, arising from different solutions to an original error in lettering the signatures—after quire "s" a second "r" was printed, followed by "t". The error was corrected in two of the variations using overslips in different ways. In the third variation, the erroneously lettered signatures were left as is. The pagination of all known copies is the same. The signatures of the present copy match that of King Manuel's through quire "t", i.e., X4 [-X1, blank?], a-h8, i4, k-t8—our quire "t" is actually the second "r", with overslips except on the third and fourth leaves. Our copy then has tt8 (the first "t" an overslip), u8, x8, z8, y8, [tironian ampersand, similar to the symbol used in King Manuel's copy for the quire after y]6. Of the three copies at the Biblioteca Nacional, Lisbon, copy 2 (Res. 317 V—uncensored with some worming at beginning and ugly repairs, but overall large and fresh) and copy 3 (Res. 1470 P—small, badly wormed, with many ugly repairs, lacking 4 leaves) have the same overslips as our copy, while copy 1 (Res. 170 V—not censored, some marginal worming, not affecting text) employs a different system of lettering the overslips. Copy 1 at the Biblioteca Nacional is presumably the same as the King Manuel copy, at the Ducal Palace of the Braganças (Vila Viçosa), although we have not been able to examine the King Manuel copy as yet, and there is no mention of overslips in the King Manuel Catalogue. The Palha copy, at the Houghton Library, Harvard University (lacking leaf CLXVII) has no overslips whatsoever, so its signatures run X 4 (-X 1, blank?), a-h8, i4, [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Woodcut diagrams in text, Aldine anchor devices on t.p.s (A72).; lacks last leaf with Aldine anchor [O8.] This is the classic collection of the ancient Roman writers on agricultural subjects.Marcus Porcius Cato (234-149B.C) wrote De Agri Cultura c160 B.C. which deals with the development of vine, olive, and fruit growing. Marcus Terentius Varro (116-27 B.C.) wrote Rerum rusticarum which treats with general agriculture, cattle and sheep raising, and smaller farm livestock. Lucius Iunius Columella wrote De Re Rustica in A.D. 60-65 and it also treats with general agriculture from farm buildings, soils, crops, domestic animals, poultry, fish, and bees. Rutilius Taurus Aemilianus Palladius (4th c. A.D.) was a knowledgeable agriculturists with estates in Italy and Sardinia. Segunda edición, segunda tirada. La presente edición de esta obra fue compuesta por Miguel de Eguia en 1530, contando un total de 10 folios para la portada y preliminares y 175 folios de texto. Cayó inmediatamente en censura y se suprimieron los folios 128 a 175 que contenían las biografías de hombres ilustres de España. Una vez destruidos los folios 128 a 175, se reimprimieron los preliminares y el folio 128, con el colofón fechado en 1533. Los ejemplares son raros. Obra bien impresa, con bellas letras capitulares y animada disposición del texto. La portada es de gran riqueza artística y es sin duda una de las más bellas salidas de las prensas españolas en el primer tercio del XVI.Como consta en el encabezamiento del primer folio de preliminares, la presente edición se mandó expurgar de acuerdo con el "Indice de Libros Prohibidos y a Expurgar" que mandó publicar la Inquisición en 1707. "Esta corregido conforme al Expurgatorio del año de 1707 por Comisión del Santo Inquisidor General D. Gregorio Nieto". La expurgación afecta algo menos de 15 líneas de texto, perteneciendo al capítulo que habla de los Judíos.Consta la obra de un total de XXII Libros: tratan los primeros de la división física y geográfica de España, con sus minerales, agricultura y otras facultades así como la extensión de sus territorios y una pormenorizada descripción de ellos. Habla de los diferentes pueblos que pasaron por la península como los romanos, los moros o los godos. A partir del Libro octavo describe las Provincias del Reino, principalmente Portugal, Castilla y Aragón. En los Libros XIX y XX se trata extensamente del reinado de los Reyes Católicos Fernando e Isabel, así como diferentes aspectos de su gobierno y la composición del reino en aquellos momentos, con un capítulo dedicado a las Islas Canarias y otro a las nuevas Islas y Tierras del hemisferio recién descubiertas (América) por ¡Pedro Colón?! El Libro XXI trata de la toma a los moros de la ciudad de Granada.Ejemplar muy limpio y con generosos márgenes, la portada está profesionalmente restaurada en los márgenes, sin afectar al texto; un folio con pequeña falta en el margen superior, también sin afectar. Ejemplar muy ligeramente lavado y reencuadernado con su pergamino original. Frontespizio in rosso e nero con titolo circoscritto da ampia bordura silografica, nota di possesso manoscritta.Legatura coeva in pergamena antica con riutilizzo di foglio membranaceo da antico codice manoscritto. Dorso a quattro nervi. Azzone fu uno dei maggiori glossatori del diritto civile medioevale, compilando la Summa tra la fine del 1100 e gli inizi del 1200. Essa contiene oltre alla Summa Codicis, la Summa Institutionum ed ed è considerata come uno dei capolavori della scienza giuridica oscurando la fama delle Summae precedenti ed utilizzata per molti secoli fino al '600. Discreto esemplare con buoni margini, aloni marginali nella seconda parte del tomo, che alla fine toccano leggermente il testo, margine sup. leggermente consunto in alcune pagine. Legatura piuttosto consunta soprattutto a spigoli e angoli con ampie mancanze della pergamena ai piatti. Alcune note marginali. Non in Sapori. collazione facta cum aliis vetustissimis codici bus manuscriptis: una cum Sumariis et apostillis: superadditis quibusdam Additionibus numquam impressis: per clarissimum Hieronymm Gigantem forosemproniensem locis suis insertis: cum Repertorio noviter.
