The work has been, incorrectly, attributed to Johannes Ebser, Bishop of Chiemsee. Berthold Pürstinger (1465-1543), bishop of Chiemsee, was "often employed in important matters by Archbishop Leonard (d. 1519) and by his successor, Mathäus Lang (d. 1519). . Lang's energetic reformatory measures accorded with Berthold's deepest wishes, and he seems to have both inspired them and given them expression. When Berthold was sent to suppress the Lutherans in Kitzbühel he accomplished little, his retiring nature being unfitted for decisive action. . His Onus ecclesiae had appeared in 1524 and Archbishop Lang was anxious that Berthold would continue his literary work. . "Bethold's writings have far more interest than the deeds of his active and public life; and they reveal the man with no less clearness. The Onus ecclesiae was published anonymously (Landshut, 1524, Cologne, 1531, 2d ed. revised, Augsburg, 1531), but there is no doubt about his authorship. As early as 1548 it appears in a Venetian index of heretical books and in 1550 in the Louvain index. . Berthold's purpose is to call to repentance and reform; for this end he depicts in dark colors the 'burden' which lies on the entire Church--a twofold weight of guilt and impending punishment, in which all are involved, but especially Rome and the clergy. The Turks, who were then threatening eastern Europe, are an instrument of the merited doom; and the 'reformation' by which the Church was already divided forebodes more to come. . Joachim of Fiore, the revelations of St. Bridget, and other productions of the contemporary medieval prophetism furnished material, with which personal observations and experience are interwoven, so that the whole presents a well-ordered and illuminating picture of conditions in South Germany and the archdiocese of Salzburg. ." (New Schaff-Herzog, IX, p. 360). This copy, like the Durham copy described in Copac, has pasted onto title page above the title a lable with the words in sixteenth century type: "Reuerendi in Christo Patris ac domini, D. Ioannis, olim Episcopi Chemensis, & Reuerendiss. Archiepiscopi Saltzburgensis a Suffragijs." [2] 5-125 leaves (i.e.123 leaves: leaves 3 & 4 not issued with this work). | Mundus Emblematicus Studies in Neo-Latin Emblem Books
|
Brepols (distributed) - The thirteen articles in this volume deal with the Neo-Latin emblem book after the birth of the genre with Andrea Alciato's Emblematum libellus (1531). While the interest in emblematics has grown considerably during the last decades, the seminal Neo-Latin production has received relatively little attention. In Mundus Emblematicus an international team of experts in the field makes this part of the emblem tradition accessible to a broad scholarly audience. The articles cover a variety of emblem books published at the time, ranging from influential humanist collections (for instance those by Achille Bocchi, Hadrianus Junius, or Joachim Camerarius) to alchemist (Michael Maier) or religious emblems (such as the books of the Calvinist Theodere de Beze, or the Jesuit Herman Hugo). In each paper subjects dealt with include the historical context of the work and its makers, the relation between word and image, the structure of the collection as a whole, and the emblematic game (intertextuality in word and image). Moreover, several articles explore the interaction between the emblem and connected literary phenomena, like the commonplace-book, the fable or the use of commentaries. All papers are in English and all examples from Latin texts are translated. Together, these articles show the variety within the Neo-Latin emblem production, thus challenging traditional approaches of the emblem. Later full leather binding, front board detached. Engraved armorial and landscape bookplate of Thomas Alcock Beck (1795-1846), author of `Annales Furnesienses'. Leather bookplate of the great collector, Phyliss Walter Goodhart. Silius Italicus, Latin poet, orator and state functionary, who was made consul in A.D. 68 and proconsul in Asia Minor in A.D. 77. Retiring to his estate near Naples, he purchased the villas of Cicero and Virgil and made them into museums. This epic on the second Punic War, Bello Punica, an imitation of Virgil's Aeniad, is the longest surviving Latin poem. It was edited by Tiberius Catius and Hermann von dem Busche (1468-1534). FIRST EDITION of this work by the noted reformer from Constance and German humanist, Johann Zwick (ca.1496 - 1542), who had studied law in Freiburg under Udalricus Zasius and where he had been a friend and fellow student of Bopnifacius Amerbach. Zwick who had received holy orders at Constance in 1516 was later greatly influenced by the writings of Luther and secretly married in 1522. He "soon emerged as one of the leaders of the Constance reform movement. ... Under Vadianus' influence he engaged in humanist studies ... " (Contemporaries of Erasmus, III, p. 480-81). Zwick wrote and edited numerous works of educational, confessional and historical value. He died in 1542 while rendering service to the plague stricken town of Bischofszell; see New Schaff-Herzog, Religious Encyclopedia, XII, p. 537 Scarce work with the OCLC locating only two copies in US libraries: University of Minnesota and the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity Library (this copy). Illustrierte erste deutsche Ausgabe der nur im Auszug des Justinus erhaltenen ersten Universalgeschichte der römischen Literatur, des im ersten Jahrhundert vor Christus wirkenden Kelten Trogus Pompeius, in der Übersetzung des Colmaer Stadtschultheissen Hieronymus Boner (1490-1556). Der Titelholzschnitt mit Ninus und Alexander in mittelalterlicher Kriegsrüstung wurde von Jörg Breu nach Burgkmair geschnitten. Achtzehn der Textholzschnitte stammen von Hans Weiditz, einige wenige entstanden für Steiners Cicero- und Petrarca-Ausgaben, die restlichen erscheinen hier erstmals im Druck. - Kurzer Einriss im Fusssteg von Bl. XC und CIII, minimal gebräunt, ein vorzügliches Exemplar. STC, (German), 871; Dodgson II, 110 (5); 143 (14); 427 (1); Fairfax-Murray 231; Graesse III, 514; Musper L 118. First German edition of the histories of Justinus' abridgement of the 'Philippic Histories' of the Augustan historian Pompeius Trogus (a noted historian from Gallia Narbonensis), omitting all that he did not find either intrinsically interesting or else of use for historical examples. The woodcut on title - depicting Ninus and Alexander - was most probably cut after Burgkmair by Jörg Breu the Elder (1475-1537), eighteen woodcuts are by Hans Weiditz, some had been designed for the Cicero and Petrarch editions also printed by Steyner, whilst the remaining ones appeared here for the first time. These would be those on A1, A6, C3v, C4v, F4, G1, H1v, I1, K3v, K6, L2v, L5, N4, P1v, Q5v, S4, T1v, T6v. In the Herodian a fine woodcut (on A1) by Weiditz, here published for the first time, portrays a Roman Emperor on his throne with a man in fur tippet before him. For the woodcut on the title-page, representing Ninus and Alexander in medieval armours, Breu most probably imitated two of the cuts by Burgkmair. - Two short tears in lower margin of leaves XC and CIII, minimally browned. - 17th century half vellum (rebound later).

Die erste Ausgabe erschien 1528; hier vorliegend eine von 8 teils sehr ähnlichen Varianten 1531 in Augsburg erschienenen Ausgaben (vgl. VD16 F 2143-2150). - Francks berühmtes Werk gegen die Trunksucht ist möglicherweise seine erste Schrift überhaupt; entstanden um die Zeit seiner Nürnberger Heirat mit der Schwester von Hans Sebald und Barthel Beham, behandelt sie Alkoholismus von allen denkbaren theologischen, psychologischen, sozialen und moralischen Gesichtspunkten, wobei namentlich die psychologischen und sozialen Beobachtungen wegen ihrer Lebensnähe und Konkretheit lesenswert sind. Berühmt ist die Schrift zudem wegen ihrer Sprache, die voll von gemeinsprachlichen Ausdrücken, Redensarten und Sprichwörtern ist ohne nur an irgend einer Stelle derb oder gar vulgär zu werden. Wie sehr Francks Kulturpessimismus und seine Erwartung der letzten Tage schon hier entwickelt ist, verdeutlicht das abschließende Kapitel "Wie das zusauffen / fressen vnd trincken / ein gewiß zeychen sey vor dem jungsten tag". Gegen Ende heißt es da: "Ich geschweyg das fast in disen 100 jaren buchtrucken / büchsengiessen / alle scharpffen spitzigen kunst / gotslesterung / sauffen / fressen mord / vnkeuschhayt / ja alle sünd vn schand so gar ist auffkome das kein schand vn sünd mer ist / dann das wee thut". - Der große Titelholzschnitt des Petrarcameisters Hans Weiditz zeigt eine üppige Tafelszene, seitlich einen sich übergebender Zecher. - Am unteren Rand meist etwas feuchtfleckig. L'ouvrage, également intitulé Livre de la fontaine de toutes les sciences, est écrit en prose française dans la deuxième moitié du XIIIe siècle par un laïc anonyme ; selon une hypothèse de Charles Langlois l'auteur serait ' un franc É sans doute un clerc de l'Orient latin. Le nom de Sidrac fait référence au Shadrach du livre de Daniel, qui refuse comme Sidrac, de se prosterner devant les idoles (Benoît Beyer de Ryke, Les encyclopédies médiévales, un état de la question). Sous une forme dialoguée entre le philosophe chrétien Sidrac et le roi Boctus de Bactriane, il y est traité de religion, éthique, médecine, droit, politique (gouvernement des princes) et pour la première fois d'astrologie. Le texte français, connu par 63 manuscrits au moins, a été imprimé pour la première fois en 1486 (Paris, Antoine Vérard), puis réimprimé onze fois entre 1486 et 1533 et le nombre de questions abordées varie selon les éditions. Ce livre médiéval eut un très grand succès jusqu'à la Renaissance (il figurait dans toutes les bibliothèques princières : rois de France, ducs de Bourgogne, Sforza, Gonzague de Mantoue, ducs de Ferrare) et fut traduit très vite dans de nombreuses langues (oc, italien, catalan, flamand, anglais, danois etc.) Première impression de ce texte en lettres rondes, d'après Brunet ; elle comprend de nombreuses et belles lettrines à fond criblé. - 2 pages. 1531 Alalio conveys the hope from a Reverend from Cesi that his friend might be employed as a judge at the Rota. We learn from the signature at the end that the writer is a judge: "Piet[ro] Ang[iolo] Alalio Au[ditore], and it is evident from the beginning of the letter that he was in the service of Raffaele de' Medici. The letter is written on the recto of the first page, with the address on the verso of the second page. Originally folded, traces of seal. A few holes, outer margin defective with loss of some letters.

The text follows that of the folio of 1526. Text in double columns, forty-five lines per column. Title printed in red and black within architectural woodcut border, large woodcut illustration at head of Prologue (leaf A2), woodcut publisher's device on recto of final leaf, and fifty-nine small woodcuts in the text (from thirty-one blocks, of which nine are repeated once, three are repeated twice, and three are repeated three times.) Decorative woodcut initials. Folio, bound by Zaehnsdorf in 1902 (stamp-signed on front turn-in) in full brown crushed levant morocco. Covers with gilt triple-rule border, spine ruled in gilt and blind and decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board edges and turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. PLEASING CONTEMPORARY BLIND PANELLED DARK CALF over pasteboards covers with multiple blind rules and a wide central frame formed by a roll containing stylized foliage and birds later (but well made) clasps and catches rebacked expertly in the late 20th century (and one corner renewed) raised bands flanked by multiple blind rules. Historiated initials appealing device on colophon verso depicting Saint Jerome in his study clasping his lion by the paw. Front pastedown with six-line inscription in a 16th century hand by James Seddon as well as signature of John Dawber Liverpool dated 1840. Faint crackling and a little scuffing to covers very minor soiling on three or four pages but QUITE A PLEASING COPY the binding solidly restored and lustrous and THE TEXT UNUSUALLY BRIGHT CLEAN AND FRESH. Adams H-103. The Old Testament prophecies of Isaiah constitute one of the most inspiring and also one of the most debated books of the Bible divided by most modern analysts into two sections the first dating to the eighth century B.C. the second to the sixth century B.C. It is this second section which contains the famous description of the Man of Sorrows interpreted by many Christians as a foretelling of Christ. Our plump volume was produced by that indefatigable biblical commentator Haymo (d. 853) a monk at the great Germanic Benedictine monastery of Fulda and eventually Bishop of Halberstadt. Veramente bell'edizione, caratteri gotici a 2 colonne con capolettere figurati, di questi 3 celebri commentari stampati dal Jean Crespin, con titoli e paginazione separata. Sono rari a trovarsi tutti e tre assieme, anche Adams possiede solo 2 parti su 3. Il commentario di Jsaiah è datato al colophon 27 marzo 1531 e quello di Jeremiah 11 marzo 1531 anche il Baudrier cita le 3 parti separatamente e possedute divise da diverse biblioteche. Piccolo vecchio restauro all'estremo margine bianco delle prime 6 carte, più evidente al frontis, altrimenti esemplare molto bello nitido e genuino. Al verso dell'ultima carta bianca, una notazione coeva manoscritta. BM. STC. VD16 F 2143-2150). - Francks berühmtes Werk gegen die Trunksucht ist möglicherweise seine erste Schrift überhaupt; entstanden um die Zeit seiner Nürnberger Heirat mit der Schwester von Hans Sebald und Barthel Beham, behandelt sie Alkoholismus von allen denkbaren theologischen, psychologischen, sozialen und moralischen Gesichtspunkten, wobei namentlich die psychologischen und sozialen Beobachtungen wegen ihrer Lebensnähe und Konkretheit lesenswert sind. Berühmt ist die Schrift zudem wegen ihrer Sprache, die voll von gemeinsprachlichen Ausdrücken, Redensarten und Sprichwörtern ist ohne nur an irgend einer Stelle derb oder gar vulgär zu werden. Wie sehr Francks Kulturpessimismus und seine Erwartung der letzten Tage schon hier entwickelt ist, verdeutlicht das abschließende Kapitel "Wie das zusauffen / fressen vnd trincken / ein gewiß zeychen sey vor dem jungsten tag". Gegen Ende heißt es da: "Ich geschweyg das fast in disen 100 jaren buchtrucken / büchsengiessen / alle scharpffen spitzigen kunst / gotslesterung / sauffen / fressen mord / vnkeuschhayt / ja alle sünd vn schand so gar ist auffkome das kein schand vn sünd mer ist / dann das wee thut". - Der große Titelholzschnitt des Petrarcameisters Hans Weiditz zeigt eine üppige Tafelszene, seitlich einen sich übergebender Zecher. - Am unteren Rand meist etwas feuchtfleckig. Achtzehn der Textholzschnitte stammen von Hans Weiditz, einige wenige entstanden für Steiners Cicero- und Petrarca-Ausgaben, die restlichen erscheinen hier erstmals im Druck. - Kurzer Einriss im Fusssteg von Bl. The woodcut on title - depicting Ninus and Alexander - was most probably cut after Burgkmair by Jörg Breu the Elder (1475-1537), eighteen woodcuts are by Hans Weiditz, some had been designed for the Cicero and Petrarch editions also printed by Steyner, whilst the remaining ones appeared here for the first time. These would be those on A1, A6, C3v, C4v, F4, G1, H1v, I1, K3v, K6, L2v, L5, N4, P1v, Q5v, S4, T1v, T6v. In the Herodian a fine woodcut (on A1) by Weiditz, here published for the first time, portrays a Roman Emperor on his throne with a man in fur tippet before him. For the woodcut on the title-page, representing Ninus and Alexander in medieval armours, Breu most probably imitated two of the cuts by Burgkmair. - Two short tears in lower margin of leaves XC and CIII, minimally browned. - 17th century half vellum (rebound later). Die erste Ausgabe erschien 1528; hier vorliegend eine von 8 teils sehr ähnlichen Varianten 1531 in Augsburg erschienenen Ausgaben (vgl. VD16 F 2143-250). - Francks berühmtes Werk gegen die Trunksucht ist möglicherweise seine erste Schrift überhaupt; entstanden um die Zeit seiner Nürnberger Heirat mit der Schwester von Hans Sebald und Barthel Beham, behandelt sie Alkoholismus von allen denkbaren theologischen, psychologischen, sozialen und moralischen Gesichtspunkten, wobei namentlich die psychologischen und sozialen Beobachtungen wegen ihrer Lebensnähe und Konkretheit lesenswert sind. Berühmt ist die Schrift zudem wegen ihrer Sprache, die voll von gemeinsprachlichen Ausdrücken, Redensarten und Sprichwörtern ist ohne nur an irgend einer Stelle derb oder gar vulgär zu werden. Wie sehr Francks Kulturpessimismus und seine Erwartung der letzten Tage schon hier entwickelt ist, verdeutlicht das abschließende Kapitel "Wie das zusauffen / fressen vnd trincken / ein gewiß zeychen sey vor dem jungsten tag". Gegen Ende heißt es da: "Ich geschweyg das fast in disen 100 jaren buchtrucken / büchsengiessen / alle scharpffen spitzigen kunst / gotslesterung / sauffen / fressen mord / vnkeuschhayt / ja alle sünd vn schand so gar ist auffkome das kein schand vn sünd mer ist / dann das wee thut". - Der große Titelholzschnitt des Petrarcameisters Hans Weiditz zeigt eine üppige Tafelszene, seitlich einen sich übergebender Zecher. - Am unteren Rand meist etwas feuchtfleckig. Insgesamt recht gutes und ansprechendes Exemplar!

Galliot du Pré 1531 In-12 de (32)-271-(1) ff., maroquin rouge, dos à cinq nerfs, dentelle intérieure, double filet doré sur les coupes, tranches dorées (Pagnant). 5000 Belle impression en lettres rondes de Pierre Vidoue pour Galliot du Pré. L'ouvrage, également intitulé Livre de la fontaine de toutes les sciences, est écrit en prose française dans la deuxième moitié du XIIIe siècle par un laïc anonyme ; selon une hypothèse de Charles Langlois l'auteur serait ' un franc É sans doute un clerc de l'Orient latin. Le nom de Sidrac fait référence au Shadrach du livre de Daniel, qui refuse comme Sidrac, de se prosterner devant les idoles (Benoît Beyer de Ryke, Les encyclopédies médiévales, un état de la question). Sous une forme dialoguée entre le philosophe chrétien Sidrac et le roi Boctus de Bactriane, il y est traité de religion, éthique, médecine, droit, politique (gouvernement des princes) et pour la première fois d'astrologie. Le texte français, connu par 63 manuscrits au moins, a été imprimé pour la première fois en 1486 (Paris, Antoine Vérard), puis réimprimé onze fois entre 1486 et 1533 et le nombre de questions abordées varie selon les éditions. Ce livre médiéval eut un très grand succès jusqu'à la Renaissance (il figurait dans toutes les bibliothèques princières : rois de France, ducs de Bourgogne, Sforza, Gonzague de Mantoue, ducs de Ferrare) et fut traduit très vite dans de nombreuses langues (oc, italien, catalan, flamand, anglais, danois etc.) Première impression de ce texte en lettres rondes, d'après Brunet ; elle comprend de nombreuses et belles lettrines à fond criblé. Le titre est imprimé en rouge et noir. L'ouvrage est illustré de quatre figures sur bois, l'une sur le titre, l'une à la fin de la table, une troisième au commencement du texte et la dernière constituant la marque de l'imprimeur au verso du dernier feuillet. Bel exemplaire, grand de marges, parfaitement établi par Pagnant, soigneusement lavé et réencollé. Brunet V, 606 ; Graesse VI, 536.

The work has been, incorrectly, attributed to Johannes Ebser, Bishop of Chiemsee. Berthold Pürstinger (1465-1543), bishop of Chiemsee, was "often employed in important matters by Archbishop Leonard (d. 1519) and by his successor, Mathäus Lang (d. 1519). ... Lang's energetic reformatory measures accorded with Berthold's deepest wishes, and he seems to have both inspired them and given them expression. When Berthold was sent to suppress the Lutherans in Kitzbühel he accomplished little, his retiring nature being unfitted for decisive action. ... His Onus ecclesiae had appeared in 1524 and Archbishop Lang was anxious that Berthold would continue his literary work. ... "Bethold's writings have far more interest than the deeds of his active and public life; and they reveal the man with no less clearness. The Onus ecclesiae was published anonymously (Landshut, 1524, Cologne, 1531, 2d ed. revised, Augsburg, 1531), but there is no doubt about his authorship. As early as 1548 it appears in a Venetian index of heretical books and in 1550 in the Louvain index. ... Berthold's purpose is to call to repentance and reform; for this end he depicts in dark colors the 'burden' which lies on the entire Church--a twofold weight of guilt and impending punishment, in which all are involved, but especially Rome and the clergy. The Turks, who were then threatening eastern Europe, are an instrument of the merited doom; and the 'reformation' by which the Church was already divided forebodes more to come. ... Joachim of Fiore, the revelations of St. Bridget, and other productions of the contemporary medieval prophetism furnished material, with which personal observations and experience are interwoven, so that the whole presents a well-ordered and illuminating picture of conditions in South Germany and the archdiocese of Salzburg. ..." FIRST EDITION of this work by the noted reformer from Constance and German humanist, Johann Zwick (ca.1496 - 1542), who had studied law in Freiburg under Udalricus Zasius and where he had been a friend and fellow student of Bopnifacius Amerbach. Zwick who had received holy orders at Constance in 1516 was later greatly influenced by the writings of Luther and secretly married in 1522. He "soon emerged as one of the leaders of the Constance reform movement. . Under Vadianus' influence he engaged in humanist studies . " (Contemporaries of Erasmus, III, p. 480-81). Zwick wrote and edited numerous works of educational, confessional and historical value. Der Titelholzschnitt mit Ninus und Alexander in mittelalterlicher Kriegsrüstung wurde von Jörg Breu nach Burgkmair geschnitten. Achtzehn der Textholzschnitte stammen von Hans Weiditz, einige wenige entstanden für Steiners Cicero- und Petrarca-Ausgaben, die restlichen erscheinen hier erstmals im Druck. - Kurzer Einriss im Fusssteg von Bl. First German edition of the histories of Justinus' abridgement of the 'Philippic Histories' of the Augustan historian Pompeius Trogus (a noted historian from Gallia Narbonensis), omitting all that he did not find either intrinsically interesting or else of use for historical examples. The woodcut on title - depicting Ninus and Alexander - was most probably cut after Burgkmair by Jörg Breu the Elder (1475-1537), eighteen woodcuts are by Hans Weiditz, some had been designed for the Cicero and Petrarch editions also printed by Steyner, whilst the remaining ones appeared here for the first time. These would be those on A1, A6, C3v, C4v, F4, G1, H1v, I1, K3v, K6, L2v, L5, N4, P1v, Q5v, S4, T1v, T6v. In the Herodian a fine woodcut (on A1) by Weiditz, here published for the first time, portrays a Roman Emperor on his throne with a man in fur tippet before him. For the woodcut on the title-page, representing Ninus and Alexander in medieval armours, Breu most probably imitated two of the cuts by Burgkmair. - Two short tears in lower margin of leaves XC and CIII, minimally browned. - 17th century half vellum (rebound later). Paris Couteau for Galliot du Pre 1531 - Clement Marot's third edition, Galliot Du Pre issue, of one of the most popular works of medieval French literature. The text follows that of the folio of 1526. Text in double columns, forty-five lines per column. Title printed in red and black within architectural woodcut border, large woodcut illustration at head of Prologue (leaf A2), woodcut publisher's device on recto of final leaf, and fifty-nine small woodcuts in the text (from thirty-one blocks, of which nine are repeated once, three are repeated twice, and three are repeated three times.) Decorative woodcut initials. Folio, bound by Zaehnsdorf in 1902 (stamp-signed on front turn-in) in full brown crushed levant morocco. Covers with gilt triple-rule border, spine ruled in gilt and blind and decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board edges and turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. (4), 131, (1) leaves. Title and a few other leaves very slightly shaved. Minimal light staining and browning. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Overall a superb copy, very bright and fresh.
