ANTONIO SALAMANCA (SALAMANCA 1478
|
| ARONNE 1530
|
"Etching with engraving, 1530 circa, signed with monogram on plate at lower right. Subject by Parmigianino. Example in the second state, with the address of the publisher Nicola van Aelst added at the lower part. A magnificent impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with unidentified watermark, narrow margins, in excellent conditions. The work reproduces the counterpart of the prophet Aron, one of the four monochromes painted by Parmigianino on the basis of the external area of the Steccata. The attribution of the work to Salamanca was first made by Copertini in 1932. Salamanca, who worked as publisher and engraver in Rome between 1530 and his death, had the great merit to save the plates and the works of Marcantonio Raimondi and his workshop from the Sack of Rome, founding a chalcographic studio before Lafrery, with whom he then established a partnership. Bartsch didnt know this extremely rare work, which has been lately catalogued in Parmigianino Tradotto. It is not convincing the attribution of this plate to the Milanese publisher; the work shows many high quality characteristics, which mean it has been probably realized in the roman period of Parmigianino. Maybe, as it often happens, it is part of Raimondis workshop, which Salamanca then edited." Mussini & De Rubeis p. 208, 435; Copertini p. 186, LXX. 128 319

De dignitate sacerdotali, libri sex vere aurei, Germano Brixio Altissiodorensi interprete . Cologne; Johann Gymnich, 1530. 8vo. [88] leaves. 8vo . I. Important collection of thirteen sermons written by the German abbot and theologian, Eckbert of Schönau (1132-1184) against the heretical doctrines put forth by the Cathari. Eckbert (or Egbert, Eckebert) "came from a noble family of the Rhineland . He became a canon of the church of SS. Cassius and Florentius at Bonn, but in 1155, after a journey to Rome, he entered the Benedictines at the Abbey of Schönau, in the Diocese of Trier, . Rainald, then archbishop of Cologne, summoned Eckbert to debate the doctrines of the Cathari in his archdiocese; Eckbert's Sermones contra Catharos, dedicated to the archbishop, proved to be a remarkable clear and penetrating refutation of the heresy" (New Cath. Enc. V, p. 38). The OCLC locates only a microfilm copy (under Egbert) II. Scarce early edition of this translation of the De Sacerdotio of St. John Chrysostom (ca. 347-407)by the eminent French humanist, Germain de Brie (ca. 1490-1538), who was a close friend and disciple of Erasmus as well as an enemy of Sir Thomas More. "Towards 1522, Brie returned to his Greek studies with Girolamo Fondulo of Cremona. He was particularly attracted to St John Chrysostom and began to translate several of his works. Brie's translation of De sacerdotio in May 1525 . attracted the attention of Erasmus, who invited Brie to collaborate with him in his efforts to make Chrysostom more accessible. . Brie's life was one of peaceful and refined ease. He combined the positions of secretary to the queen and almoner to the king." (Contemporaries of Erasmus, I, p. 201-2) Bound together with two other rare works from the same period each of which is lacking one leaf as described: Werstem, Johann (VD 16, W 2098). [Augsburg: Heinrich Stayner, December 28th 1530]. - 4to (195 x 143 mm.), ff. [iv], 46. With 4 large woodcut illustrations, one full-page, depicting the donation of the book, a full-length portrait of Alexander the Great, Aristotle and disciples studying the stars and Aristotle teaching, one 7-line white-on-black woodcut historiated initial showing a satyr playing a tube, small woodcut initial, running titles throughout, gothic type. Some expert barely noticeable paper repair to foremargin, and to inner margin of first few leaves, very light soiling to title. Modern full grained brown morocco gilt by the Lakeside Press, Chicago, dotted and filleted border to sides, small gilt laurel center-piece to upper side, panelled spine with five raised bands lettered and filleted in gilt, inner dentelles gilt. Some sixteenth-century pen underlining and bookmarks throughout, contemporary ownership inscription to title, faded. A very good copy. An attractive early German illustrated edition of one of the most revered of all books on alchemy. Largely based on the pseudo-Aristotelian Epistola ad Alexandrum (Secreta secretorum), this version, the work of the German doctor Johann Lorchner, reproduced the canon of extracts from Avicenna, Galen, and al-Razi's Liber nonus ad Almansorem that had circulated in Latin and vernacular editions since the beginning of the century. As is stated in the title, Lorchner died before the completion of this edition, whose publication passed into the hands of Johann Besolt. A classic in the prolific genre of books of secrets, the pseudo-Aristotle had enjoyed a large manuscript circulation since the thirteenth century in the translation of Philip of Tripoli. Its successful Parisian edition of 1520 augmented its credit and citations throughout Europe. cfr. Thorndike V and VI, passim. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

LAW

| Natura Brevium
|
1530 1530 - (LAW). Natura Brevium. No city: no publisher, circa 1530. 12mo (4 1/4 inches by 2 1/2 inches), 18th-century full brown tooled calf rebacked, raised bands. $2200. Pocket-sized edition of this early English legal reference. In law French. Contains the writs most in use in the reign of Edward III, together with a short comment on the application and properties of each of them. "Of far greater practical importance was the Natura Brevium which not only set forth the writs but contained a commentary on them. The first edition in law French was published by Pynson in 1496. More than 15 editions followed. the book also appeared in English with the first edition published by Redman in 1532, followed by ten more editions in the 16th century" (Henry N. Ess III). "It is not known by whom this very ancient book was compiled, nor exactly when it was first printed, but, probably, before 1516 by R. Pinson. There are some 12 French, and half that number of English editions" (Marvin, 533). Law French was a version of medieval Anglo-French used specifically in England for legal writing, in order to avoid confusion caused by Latin legal terms. Without title page or leaves 181, 183, and 184. The final leaf has been bound in reversed, with table of contents listed on the recto, "Olde tenurs" printed on the verso; this would be the half title to a second part of the book, an account of the various tenures by which land was held during Edward III's reign, and which often was published with the Natura Brevium (see Beale T69). Olde Tenurs is not present in this volume; the table of contents is for Olde Tenurs, not Natura Brevium. STC lists only one 12mo copy with single-column law French text (STC 18394.5), as here, published in 1534; this copy appears to be the first half of that volume. Harvard Law Catalogue II:175. Beale T79-T97. See Sweet & Maxwell 107. "Published in Edw. 3. time" written in later hand on the half title for Natura Brevium. Three lines of law French handwritten on the Olde Tenurs table of contents page. Occasional early underlining and marginal annotations. Interior fine. Expertly and sympathetically rebacked; light rubbing to calf. Fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition]

Hs. Besitzeintrag Societatis Jesu Constantis. 1597 auf Titel. VD 16, P-3534; Panzer VI, 274; Adams P-1561; STC, (German), 705; (Ausstellungskat.) 5me Centenaire de la naissance à Séléstat de Beatus Rhenanus (1985), Nr. 69; Schweiger II, 786; Hirstein, Beatus Rhenanus: lecteur et éditeur des textes anciens (2000). The rare first edition of Pliny the Elder's Natural History composed by the Selestat humanist Beatus Rhenanus (1485-1547). One year after the first (Johann) Froben edition of Pliny's only work known Rhenanus published in March 1526 his volume of commentaries ("Emendationes") based on a newly found manuscript of Pliny's text at the monestary in Murbach (Alsace). As we know from letters they attracted great interest by various humanists among them Andrea Alciati, Bonifacius Amerbach and Guillaume Budé. (cm.16,5) legatura bella Mz. - Riccardi II, 392 + suppl. VII 84; Houzenau Lancaster I, 2807.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]
