One of the most decorative large format maps of North America from the period, finely engraved by Gerin and illustrated by A. Testard. Zweite, gegenüber der ersten von 1525 überarbeitete und massgebliche Vellutello-Ausgabe des Canzoniere Petrarcas mit der schönen, doppelblattgrossen Karte der Gegend um Vaucluse, die für Petrarca wichtige Orte zeigt. Vellutello hatte die Gedichtsammlung nach der Entwicklung der Liebesgeschichte neu geordnet in einen Teil "in vita" und dann "in morte di Madonna Laura", mit einem dritten Teil als Anhang. Die reichen Kommentare geben auch viele biographische Informationen. - Fünf Gedichte im dritten Teil mit alten Zensuraustreichungen, jedoch gut lesbar. Wenig gebräunt, kaum fleckig, Karte oben etwas knapp an die Einfassung beschnitten,etwas berieben, Ecken etwas bestossen, dekorativer Einband. - Five poems in the third part with Important, second but altered and relevant edition of the most successful commented edition of the Canzoniere of Petrarca with a nice double-page engraved map of the region of Vaucluse. Complete copy with the blank leaf, minor browning or spotting, map cut a little short on top but without loss, binding somewhat rubbed, corners a little bumped, still decorative. [FIG.GRAMMATICA] (cm31) Piena Pergamena originale con unghie, titolo manoscritto al piatto anteriore. -cc.8nn., pp.374, +1c.bianca. Bellissimo frontis entro cornice xilografica costituita da sei grandi vignette figurate con episodi mitologici. Carattere rotondo, alcuni passi in greco, capolettera figurati, tre dei quali bellissimi, (5,6 x 5,6) con putti, dal celebre alfabeto degli infanti del Durer. Dedica al lettore e al console Juliano. Prima edizione con in fine il commento del Rufino edita ad istanza di G.Hyttorpius ed Eucharius Cervicornus. In fine contiene il "de ponderibus et mensuris" e il "de metris comicis". Esemplare con interessanti note manoscritte coeve ai margini; in latino e in greco in chiara grafia. Tutte le grammatiche del '500 sono rare, soprattutto se complete; questa fu poi più volte ristampata a Basilea. Qualche lievissimo alone e fioritura marginale a poche carte, insignificante piccola integrazione al margine bianco basso delle prime 3 carte, altrimenti esemplare bellissimo nitido e marginoso. *ADAMS P 2114, *BM.STC.GERMAN 715; *GRAESSE V 447. | Grace and Grandeur: the Portraiture of Paolo Veronese
|
Harvey Miller. Of the triumvirate of sixteenth-century Venetian painters, Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto, Paolo [Caliari] Veronese (1528-1588) best conveyed Venice's civic splendor. His masterpieces in the Doge's Palace conferred on the Republic a magnificence and authority that was rapidly dwindling by the end of the Renaissance. But on a private level, he also reshaped the fashions of the Serenissima through a steady stream of portrait commissions. Many members of Venice's most elite families sat for Veronese, as did notable artists and authors, including Titian and Sir Phillip Sidney. Once regarded as Venice's best portraitist, his talents in this genre unfortunately remain largely unknown to modern audiences. This book offers the first comprehensive study of the approximately forty portraits that survive. Shedding new light on early works, such as the pendants of the Da Porto and the frescos of the Barbaro in the Palladian villa at Maser, Professor Garton also examines Paolo's images of women within the larger polemics surrounding the anonymous beauties of Giorgione, Palma il Vecchio, and Titian. The author analyzes Veronese's innovations in martial portraiture, melancholic portrayals of artists and nobility, and evocations of the antique. Relevant issues of social history, class insecurity, and poetic convention are all brought to bear in deciphering the meanings of these images and what they reveal about the painter and his clientele. This layered study of Venice's golden age of painting ends appropriately with a glance at the "moderns" who profited most from the study of Veronese's portraits: Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Henri Fantin-Latour, Mary Cassatt, and Henri Matisse. Striking regional map of India, centered on the Bay of Cambaia and the town of Abmadabad. Includesdecorative cartouche and compass rose. The map was used to illustrate the Dutch translation of the account of Nuno da Cunha in the region. Nuno da Cunha participated in the battles at Oja and Brava, and at the capture of Panane, under the viceroy Francisco de Almeida. Named by João III ninth governor of Portuguese possessions in India, he served from April 1528 to 1538. In 1529, Nuno sent an expedition that sacked and burned the city of Damão on the Arabian Sea at the mouth of the Damão River, about 100 miles north of Mumbai in the Muslim state of Gujarat. Forces under his control captured Baxay (now Vasai, often mistaken for Basra in Iraq) from the Muslim ruler of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah, on January 20, 1533. The next year, renamed Bassein, the city became the capital of the Portuguese province of the North, and the great citadel of black basalt, still standing, was begun. (It was completed in 1548). Splendido marchio tip. di Jean Petit al frontespizio, di Pierre Vidoue al colophon, due splendide incisioni a piena pagina raffiguranti numerosi stemmi con il nome dell'A. al centro, bellissimi capilettera figurati. Leg. coeva in piena pelle, dorso a 4 nervi con titoli ms. su tass. di carta. Decorazioni geometriche ancora visibili ai piatti. Mancanze di pelle alla legatura, piu' evidenti alle estremita' del dorso, in corrispondenza dei nervi ed alle punte. Qualche sporadico e piccolo alone, peraltro internamente freschissimo. Edizione di notevole pregio tipografico. Robert Gaguin (1433-1501), storico ed umanista francese, pubblico' per la prima volta questo ""Compendium de origine et gestis francorum"" nel 1495. L'opera, che ebbe grande diffusione in tutta Europa, delinea le principali gesta dei re francesi dagli albori del regno sino al contemporaneo Francesco I. Cfr. Adams, I, 462; Kvk. (S85)

BON EXEMPLAIRE. ***___***___*** In-8, boards marbled of the XIXe century, part of title blue, back smooth decorated with gilded nets, blue sections, [28] - 322- [2] pages, some figures on wood cut whose chart, marks with the title and the back of last the layers. (Hinges and corners used, marginal wetting and brunissure of angle at the head of volume, restorations of angle on several layers at the end of the volume.) First Aldine edition. One knows little thing of Macrobe, if not that it was consul and large-Master of the Guard wrap of ThÚodose into 422. This edition gathers the seven books remaining of Saturnales and the Comments on the dream of Scipion where Macrobe epilog on the work of CicÚron. "Macrobe introduces its philosophical convictions inspired by the neo-platonist principles, discusses with heat on nature the heart and God, on the universe and the stars; it opens the way with these allegorical, mystical and astrological interpretations which will be in honor with the Middle Ages". Among the figures twice one finds the good known hemisphere dividing the world into three climatic zones. Some annotations GOOD. Première édition aldine. On sait peu de chose de Macrobe, sinon qu'il fut consul et grand-maître de la Garde robe de Théodose en 422. Cette édition rassemble les sept livres restant des Saturnales et les Commentaires sur le songe de Scipion où Macrobe épilogue sur l'ouvrage de Cicéron. "Macrobe introduit ses convictions philosophiques inspirées par les principes néo-platoniciens, discute avec chaleur sur la nature de l'âme et de Dieu, sur l'univers et les astres ; il ouvre la voie à ces interprétations allégoriques, mystiques et astrologiques qui seront en honneur au Moyen Age". Da Cunha was the son of the famous Portuguese navigator, admiral and ambassador to Pope Leo X, Tristão da Cunha, and Tristão's wife Antónia Pais. Nuno da Cunha participated in the battles at Oja and Brava, and at the capture of Panane, under the viceroy Francisco de Almeida. Named by João III ninth governor of Portuguese possessions in India, he served from April 1528 to 1538. In 1529, Nuno sent an expedition that sacked and burned the city of Damão on the Arabian Sea at the mouth of the Damão River, about 100 miles north of Mumbai in the Muslim state of Gujarat. Forces under his control captured Baxay (now Vasai, often mistaken for Basra in Iraq) from the Muslim ruler of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah, on January 20, 1533. The next year, renamed Bassein, the city became the capital of the Portuguese province of the North, and the great citadel of black basalt, still standing, was begun. (It was completed in 1548). Forced to return to Portugal as a result of court intrigues, he was shipwrecked at the Cape of Good Hope and drowned. Includes a decorative cartouche and vignette. From Vander Aa's Dutch Translation. Zweite, gegenüber der ersten von 1525 überarbeitete und massgebliche Vellutello-Ausgabe des Canzoniere Petrarcas mit der schönen, doppelblattgrossen Karte der Gegend um Vaucluse, die für Petrarca wichtige Orte zeigt. Vellutello hatte die Gedichtsammlung nach der Entwicklung der Liebesgeschichte neu geordnet in einen Teil "in vita" und dann "in morte di Madonna Laura", mit einem dritten Teil als Anhang. Die reichen Kommentare geben auch viele biographische Informationen. - Fünf Gedichte im dritten Teil mit alten Zensuraustreichungen, jedoch gut lesbar. Wenig gebräunt, kaum fleckig, Karte oben etwas knapp an die Einfassung beschnitten,etwas berieben, Ecken etwas bestossen, dekorativer Einband. - Five poems in the third part with Important, second but altered and relevant edition of the most successful commented edition of the Canzoniere of Petrarca with a nice double-page engraved map of the region of Vaucluse. Complete copy with the blank leaf, minor browning or spotting, map cut a little short on top but without loss, binding somewhat rubbed, corners a little bumped, still decorative.

Cat. of French Books p. 300. Extremely rare edition of this wide spread pharmaceutical manual. The superb renaissance woodcut borders and the woodcut initials throughout the text render this work particularly attractive. "The author, Joannes Jacobus Manlius, or de Manliis, with the addition, de Bosco or Boscho, was an Italian physician, born at Alexandria" (Ferguson II, p. 73). Quite a number of editions appeared since 1490 of the book. The work is divided as follows: De electuariis et confectionibus - De sirupis, trociscis et pillulis . - Lumen apothecariorum, by Quirinus de Augustis de Derbona - Thesaurus aromatariorum, by P. Suardus. "Wichtiges Apothekenbuch, bis in die Mitte des 17. Jahrh. verwendet, bemerkenswert durch Erläuterungen von Synonymen; berichtet auch über die Simplica. Copies of any edition are virtually unknown to bibliographers of the subject, but it appears that the work was often reprinted by Christian Egenholff and his heirs (see: J. Benzing, Chr. Eggenolff zu Strassburg und seine Drucke (1528-1530) ; Das Antiquariat X (1954), pp. 88-89, no. 13). Benzing mentions a copy of the 1529 edition and a "spätere, erweiterte Neu-ausgabe", z.B. 1597 bei Chr. Egenolffs Erben. The edition of 1531 is a reprint of the one of 1529, with the same woodcut on the title, and with the addition of a woodcut tailpiece. Tears throughout carefully repaired; some staining, but a good copy.

The isolario, or book of islands, was a popular genre that had first appeared in manuscript examples by Cristoforo Buondelmonte dating from the early fifteenth century, then in printed versions by Bartolommeo dalli Sonetti from the late 1400s. More so than its predecessors, the isolario first published in 1528 by Venice-based cartographer Benedetto Bordone was formative for Renaissance geographical conceptions. Bordone's early sixteenth-century treatment of the island-atlas theme greatly expanded upon the earlier works, augmenting the conventional focus on the eastern Mediterranean to encompass maps of other parts of Europe and the world, stretching as far as the Indian Ocean, the African coastline and the New World. Bordone's maps of islands in the West Indies, although schematic in their outlines (perhaps reflecting the author's training as a miniaturist as opposed to a cartographer), were among the first nautical charts of these regions to become widely available, and his map of "La gran citta di Temistican" (pictured above)-- modern-day Mexico City-- brought the former Aztec capital before the eyes of curious European viewers and recorded for posterity its form prior to the destruction wrought by Cortez. Equally important is the map of the eastern coast of North America, which includes labels for "Terra de lavoratore," thought to represent a section of the modern-day Atlantic coast of Canada, and "p[ar]te del mondo novo"-- "part of the New World"-- which corresponds to the Caribbean Sea. Beneath that textual indication, at the lower margin of the map, Bordone included a corner of South America. Bordone's isolario also included a world map that is one of the earliest known instances of an oval projection, and that shows the new continent in relation to Europe, Asia and Africa.

Striking map of the region from the Philippines and Formosa to India and the Maldives, centered on the Malay Peninsula. The map was used to illustrate the Dutch Translation of the Account of Nuno da Cunha in the region. Nuno da Cunha was a governor of the Portuguese possessions in India from 1528 to 1538. He was the son of the famous Portuguese navigator, admiral and ambassador to Pope Leo X, Tristão da Cunha, and Tristão's wife Antónia Pais. Nuno da Cunha fought in battles at Oja and Brava, and at the capture of Panane, under the viceroy Francisco de Almeida. Named by João III ninth governor of Portuguese possessions in India, he served from April 1528 to 1538. On his passage to Goa, he subdued the pirates at Mombassa who had been harassing the coast of Mozambique. Nuno's brothers Pero Vaz da Cunha and Simão da Cunha were expected to serve under him as second and third in command, a form of nepotism that was expected in the Portuguese Estado da Índia. However, they died on the voyage, and Nuno was forced to rely upon local networks of clientage in Goa during his long rule. In 1529, Nuno sent an expedition that sacked and burned the city of Damão on the Arabian Sea at the mouth of the Damão River, about 100 miles north of Mumbai in the Muslim state of Gujarat. Forces under his control captured Baxay (now Vasai, often mistaken for Basra in Iraq) from the Muslim ruler of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah, on January 20, 1533. The next year, renamed Bassein, the city became the capital of the Portuguese province of the North, and the great citadel of black basalt, still standing, was begun. (It was completed in 1548). Excellent work, with good contrast, printed on thin, contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmed to platemark or inside the margins, light repairs perfectky executed, otherwise in good condition. Questa nostra è la rarissima contraffazione della edizione del 1518 e del 1521 che come documenta il Graesse: "c'est la contraffacon de la precedent edition (1521), soignee par Jac, Bedrotus." Fu stampata a Strsburgo con eleganza e nitidezza di caratteri.
