| POLYCRONICON [translated by John de Trevisa]
|
Southwark Peter Treveris at ye expences of John Reynes 1527 RARE. First Illustrated Edition and only the third issuance of the book after the Caxton printing of 1482 and the Wynken de Worde printing of 1495. With the exception of the woodcut of the musical notation on n5r, which first appeared in the printing of 1495 (and was the earliest printed musical notation in an English book), ALL THE WOODCUT ILLUSTRATIONS APPEAR HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME. Double column, black letter, zylographic title printed in red between two parts of a large woodcut block printed in red and black (Hodnett 2489, state 2), the upper portion featuring the royal arms, a portrait of Henry VIII, and the arms of London, the larger lower portion showing St. George; full page woodcut of a battle on z6v, 6 smaller woodcuts in the text (one repeated), woodcut musical notation on n5r, several 10-line and smaller woodcut initials. John Reynes' printer's mark, colophon with hunting scenes. Folio (273 x 190 mm), handsomely bound in full brown pigskin gilt, with gilt central device of the Earl of Warwick on each cover, edges gilt, by Zaehnsdorf. Fo. CCCxlvi A very handsome copy of this rare and desirable book. Complete but for the title page and colophon leaf supplied in very skillful facsimile, first twelve and last eight leaves skillfully repaired in the margins, slightly affecting text in a few places, occasional minor dust soiling, some leaves possibly supplied from another copy. A very attractive, wide-margined copy. RARE AND IMPORTANT. Only the third printing of one of the most important pieces of early English historical prose. Higden's POLYCRONICON, a world history from the Creation to 1360 A.D., was translated by Trevisa at the command of Thomas, Earl of Berkeley (d. 1361). The work draws on over 40 sources, and synthesizes a continuous diachronic and multicultural history, beginning with the Biblical account of the Creation and moving through the history of the Semitic, Hellenic, Roman, and medieval-European cultures. It served as a model for innumerable later histories, both universal and localized. The POLYCRONICON was Caxton's most ambitious printing project. It is his longest book in terms of page count, and the second-longest in terms of word count (after the GOLDEN LEGEND of 20 November 1483). It is also Caxton's most ambitious work as an editor and a writer; for Caxton significantly revised the extant English translation of the POLYCRONICON, updating its terminology considerably; and he also authored an original history of England to serve as Book 8 of the text--a writing effort which stands as Caxton's greatest achievement as an author. This printing is the third, after Caxton's original in 1482.

A solid copy of a scarce title. * Only edition located. Doneau, or Donellus, was a French humanist jurist and scholar. An antagonist of Cujas, his only real peer, he applied the latest philological methods to Roman law and attempted to organize its texts in a systematic fashion. As a staunch Calvinist engaged in religious controversies he was forced to flee France after the St. Bartholomew's Night Massacre. He went on to become a professor at the Universities of Heidelberg and Leiden, where his teaching and numerous studies made a tremendous contribution to the promotion of Roman Law in the Netherlands. Commentarii ad Codicis is one of these works. It deals with principally with the second and eighth books of Justinian's Code, which deal with actions and interdicts. Paris, Claude Chevallon, 1527. 1527 - Folio (370 x 255mm), [34] CCCXX, XLIII, [34] leaves; printed in gothic letter in double columns, title printed in red and black within a border of criblé strips containing dragons, birds, a Centaur and other grotesques, Berthold Rembolt's printing device in centre; woodcut initials throughout; a few waterstains here and there, but generally in fine condition in a contemporary signed binding by the Flemish binder Jan Ryckaert, brown calf over wooden boards tooled in blind to a panel design, the panels divided by diagonal fillets into lozenge-shaped compartments containing a variety of different stamps: a fleur-de-lys, a fly (or bee?), a rosette, a shepherd leaning on his crook, a floral bouquet, and a square stamp with the binder's initials I.R. united by a love-knot; rebacked with the original backstrip preserved, paste-downs from a 15th-century legal manuscript, catches, clasps missing. This is a large-scale signed binding by Jan Ryckaert who worked in Ghent from c.1511-1546. It carries - at the head of the title-page - a contemporary Flemish ownership inscription (partly crossed through in pen), reading "Arnoldi Motoris blancenberg[ensis]" (i.e. Blankenberge, near Ostende), followed by the punning motto "Si nil moves, nil promov[etur]". For another Ryckaert binding, incorporating the same tools, see E.P. Goldschmidt, Gothic and Renaissance Book Bindings, no. 144. See also Mirjam M. Foot, The Henry Davis Gift, vol. 2, nos. 291-292.Later in the library of William Juxon (1582-1663), who as Bishop of London attended Charles I on the scaffold and received his last words. The volume originally carried his signature in the upper margin of the title but on 2 January 1863 the signature was cut out (and the paper duly patched) by the then owner, Herbert Charles Brewster, Curate of Bulwell, Notts., who presented it to one L.H. Linder, spinster. A signed and witnessed statement to this effect is tipped inside the front cover. There are some 17th-century annotations in the volume which may be Juxon's.

| DICTIONARIVM CHALDAICUM.
|
Basel: Johann Froben, 1527 - 4 p.l. 434 pp. [1] leaf (blank on recto with printer's device on verso). FIRST EDITION. Attractive gilt-decorated vellum over stiff boards ca. 1800 by Jullion (with his ticket at front) covers framed by a chain of gilt leaves flat spine with compartments featuring fleurons and stylized floral ornaments turn-ins delicately gilt marbled edges and endpapers. Engraved title page framed with cupids and signed by Hans Holbein historiated initial with cupid publisher's device on colophon page. First and last leaf with embossed seal and front pastedown with matching bookplate of the Rochester Theological Seminary Library. Binding a bit splayed vellum a bit soiled spine gilt a little muted one leaf with three small repairs at fore edge (apparently done before binding) a small handful of leaves (including title) with slight marginal browning and trivial soiling but still quite an attractive copy the decorative binding completely sound the text very fresh and clean and the margins especially ample. Adams M-1920; STC German, p. 633; Graesse IV, 623. This is the first printed lexicon of the language that in Münster's day was known as Chaldean--that is Aramaic--the language that Christ spoke and that was used for parts of the biblical books of Ezra and Daniel. It was also used as early as the first century for a translation or paraphrase of a portion of the Old Testament called the Targum since Aramaic had for some while replaced Hebrew as the everyday spoken language of the Jews. Aramaic is also used for sections of the Talmud which preserves rabbinic interpretations of Old Testament traditions and Münster comments on the title page that his aim is to help scholars understand rabbinic commentaries. In our text the word is given in Aramaic first and then translated and explained in Latin. The geographer mathematician and Hebraist Münster (1489-1552) is best known for his monumental work Cosmographey characterized by Britannica as a supreme effort of geographical study and literature in the Reformation period. Educated at Tübingen Münster a former Franciscan friar who fell under the influence of Luther left his monastery to teach Hebrew at the University of Basel. His studies of the Aramaic and Hebrew languages typify the desire of Reformation scholars to uncover the most authentic texts and traditions of the apostolic age. Our binder is described on his ticket as binder to the Duke of Gloucester but he seems not to be mentioned in any of the usually reliable reference works. This is a rare book: ABPC lists six copies at auction since 1975 just one of those in the last 16 years (and only one of the six a decent copy which sold at Swann in 1991 for a hammer price of $4200). |
- 16mo. [23]ff. (last two blank) 114ff. 19th century vellum, morocco label. 1527. Early edition of one of six works of Galen translated into Latin by Thomas Linacre, who was keen to make the works of Galen accessible to all readers of Latin. This Paris edition appeared six years after the first edition which had appeared in Cambridge in 1521. These translations became known for their accuracy and elegance of style and became accepted as the standard versions of Galen's works. The preface is addressed to Pope Leo X with whom Linacre had been taught for a short time in Bologna by Angelo Poliziano. Linacre was a distinguished physician himself, having studied in Padua under Ermolao Barbaro and Niccolo Leoniceno, and later became physician to King Henry VII. In 1509 he founded by Royal Charter the College of Physicians in London. Moreau (1527), 1210. Durling 56.

Venice, 'In aedibus Aldi, et Andreae Asulani Soceri' (André d'Asola & sons), June 1527. - Folio. Later overlapping limp vellum. With Aldus' famous printer's device (in border, 108 x 78 mm, with text 'Aldus') on title-page and on the verso of the last leaf (with text 'Aldus. M.D.'). 120 lvs (Collation: AA-PP8). Second edition of the editio princeps, edited by Aldus in 1503 (Renouard, p. 41, nr. 6), of the commentaries and scholia on Demosthenes, written by Ulpian of Emesa who taught rhetoric at Antioch in the reign of Constantine (324-37 AD) and wrote a number of declamations and rhetorical works. Above all, he is the reputed author of these scholia to the speeches of the greatest of all Ancient Greek orators, Demosthenes (384-322 BC). A year after the editio princeps of these scholia, Aldus edited and published the editio princeps of Demosthenes himself, one of the most important books Aldus has ever printed. Demosthenes' writings provide a very interesting insight into the life and culture of Athens at this period of time, in which he constantly attempted to rally the Athenian people against Philippus and Alexander the Great, the rulers of Macedonia, using all his gifts as an orator. Demosthenes's speeches are: Olynthiacs 1-3, Philippics 1-4, For the freedom of the Rhodians, For the Megapolitans, On the Chersonese, On the Crown, On the Naval boards, and On the Peace. After the title-page with a short preface in Latin by Franciscus Asulanus on its verso, follows the text of Ulpian on f. 1-88. On f. 89-119 follows the 'Lexicon of the ten orators' by Valerius Harpocration of Alexandria, also as the second edition of the editio princeps of his dictionary of 1503. The dates of this lexicographer are not certain; some plave him under Tiberius. The 'Lexicon' contains words, including proper names, and phrases, mainly from the orators in alphabetical order, generally assigned to their sources, with explanations of points of interest or difficulty. Besides stylistic details he has valuable notes on architectural, religious, legal, constitutional, social and other antiquities. The book is nicely printed in Aldus'Greek characters (Harpocration's dictionary in two columns), leaving spaces with guide letters for initials. Good copy.- (Title-page and last pages sl. browned). Renouard, p. 104, nr. 4; UCLA 245; Hoffmann I, 537; Adams U-50 & H-69; STC Italian, p. 704. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

| Alexandrini libri: Antiquitatum, quaestionum et solutio num in Genesin, De Essaeis, De nominibus Hebraicis (divo Hieronymus interprete). De mundo [Guillaume Budé interprete]. [Herausgegeben von Johannes Sichard].
|
- Kl.-Folio (292 x 202 mm). Jhs. in Kassel wiederentdeckt. Jacobson, A Commentary on Pseudo-Philo's Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum (1996); Chr. Dietzfelbinger, Pseudo-Philo: Antiquitates Biblicae (1975). Editio princeps. One of the earliest and most important works of biblical interpretation, commonly known as the Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum, a narrative account of events from the beginning of creation to the death of king Saul that is firmly grounded in the bible. The essence of Christianity, and of Mosaic Judaism, is identified historically first by Philo Judaeus who was born c. 15 B.C. and died about fourty years after the supposed date of the Crucifixion. The Book of Biblical Antiquities is supplemented and embellished by legends and stories, giving an abundant supply of significant Jewish females. In his re-telling of the Bible, Pseudo-Philo carries on the tradition of exemplifying women who have devoted themsel [Attributes: Hard Cover]

| POLYCRONICON [translated by John de Trevisa]
|
Southwark Peter Treveris at ye expences of John Reynes 1527, the 16th day of May - RARE. John ReynesÕ printerÕs mark, colophon with hunting scenes. This printing is the third, after CaxtonÕs original in 1482. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
