Zeitschrift für Historische Forschung "à eine Fundgrube" Das Historisch-Politische Buch a "careful and useful study [à] Sach's approach is straightforward and sensible." Nordost-Archiv. (Franz Steiner 2002). 9783515080477. Hardback [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Index.|~|"First volume of this set deals with the foundation of Muslim rule in India with conquest of Sind and Multan and subsequently of trans-Indus region. The last phase, however deals with the Bahmani Kingdom in the south of India. Thus, it gives a glimpse of the period from 712 A.D. to 1525, a year prior to the commencement of the Mughal rule in India in 1526 when the first battle of Panipat was fought.|~|"Second volume deals with the ascendancy of Babur as the Emperor of India in 1526 when he achieved success in the first battle of Panipat; the achievements of Humayun, Sher Shah and Akbar, the Great. The system of government, both at the centre and in the provinces, the relationship with Rajputs, army system, development of education, art and literature, and the socio-economic life have been vividly described.|~|"Third volume covers the period of the eminent Mughal Emperors who succeeded Akbar, the Great after 1605. Their rule lasted for about one and a half century and during this period they had to face much opposition from several regions of India. Numerous revolts were crushed by them. But these factors weakened their position in the long run. It is obvious that so long as Aurangzeb remained at the helm of affairs, the administrative machinery was geared up in a nice manner. But with his death in 1707, we find weak rulers on the throne who failed to strengthen their position on the throne. This factor afforded a better opportunity to the British to establish their supremacy in India." (jacket) . ISBN: 81-7488-028-3.

Galen.
Galeni librorum pars prima. first 2 vols. of Aldine Galen (5 vols. were published).
Aldus, 1525., Venice: - The Aldine Galen Galen (A.D. 129 / 130-199 / 200). Galhnou A¢ [B¢]. Galeni librorum pars prima [secunda]. Two volumes only (of five). 2 vols. in 1, folio. [4], 24, 180 [i.e., 181], 108; [4], 184, 106ff. Vol. I colophon leaf (p4) misbound after p1; Vol. I also lacking blank leaves F4 and &6. Venice: in aedibus Aldi, et Andreae Asulani soceri, April 1525 (colophon). 317 x 227 mm. Full vellum over boards. First three leaves of Vol. I repaired, fore-edges of some leaves a little frayed, minor staining but a very good tall copy. Signature on title of the 19th-century scholar Joseph R. Gasquet, author of "The Radical Medicine of Galen in his Time" Brit. & Foreign Med.-Chir. Rev. 11 [1867]: 472-88). Editio Princeps in Greek. G-M 27. The first two volumes (of five) of the magnificent Aldine Galen, which, by publishing in one place all the known Greek texts of Galen, marked a new era in both medical and philological scholarship. The collection's five folio volumes, the climax of nearly 100 years of active scholarship, represent the largest single body of text issued by the Aldine press, which had by then passed into the hands of Aldus Manutius's father-in-law Andreas Asulanus, Aldus having died in 1515 before he could fulfil his long-held desire to issue a new edition of Galen. Asulanus, with the help of his sons Franciscus and Fredericus, continued Aldus's scholarly tradition, bringing out a number of Greek literary and historical editiones principes; "but whereas the family's not unlimited linguistic expertise might have sufficed to produce creditable editions of geographers and poets, it was clearly not up to the challenge the works of Galen presented. To meet this challenge, the Pavian professor of medicine G. B. Opizzoni (ca. 1485-ca. 1532) was placed in charge of a large group of assistants recruited mainly from northern medical scholars then studying in Italy: John Clement (ca. 1495-1572), Edward Wotton (1492-1555), William Rose (ca. 1490-1525), and Thomas Lupset (1495-1530), all Brittani and followers of Thomas Linacre (ca. 1460-1524), and the Saxon Georg Agricola (1495-1555), of De re metallica fame. The significance of the first printing of a classical author cannot be overestimated, especially a prolific one like Aristotle or Galen, whose works were not to be found in a single or even very few manuscripts, but had to be pieced together from as many manuscripts as the printer could lay his hands on. Not only did the texts of these authors go from being the private reserve of a few fortunate manuscript-owners and their friends to being available throughout the scholarly world-and that in a standard, corrected form-but their survival from the naufragium of the middle ages was once and for all assured" (Potter, in Norman, 100 Books Famous in Medicine, no. 5). The Aldine Greek Galen was quickly adopted as authoritative, and was relied on heavily by subsequent translators of Galen's works. One of the rarest of Aldine publications, only two or three complete sets of this work have been sold during the past 30 years. A complete set, if it could be found, would be worth in the range of $50,000 or more. We are offering the first two volumes of this work at an affordable price; these volumes contain 37 (nearly one-quarter) of the 160 Galenic texts identified in Durling's bibliography. Among these are the Anatomici libri novem, Galen's major anatomical work; De motu muscularum, containing the first description of artificially stimulated contraction of dissected muscle tissue; works on dissection of the nerves, veins and uterus; the embryological De foetum formatione; and ten works on pharmacology and drug therapy, comprising all of Vol. II. Renouard, p. 101. Adams G-32. Ahmanson-Murphy 202-203. Stillwell III-374. 22177 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Wittemberg, (Johann Rhau-Grunenberg), 1525. - 8vo. Later paper wrappers. 64 lvs. (Collation: A-H8). One of the 12 editions of this important treatise on the reformation of the Mass as practised in Nürnberg in the S. Sebald and S. Lorenz Church, published in the two years after its appearance. The first edition of this work by the well-known German reformer Andreas Osiander (or Andreas Hosemann; 1498-1552), was published in Nürnberg by Hieronymus Höltzel in October 1524. Editions in Nürnberg, Augsburg, Zwickau and Erfurts followed, before the publication of our edition which is listed by Seebass as the seventh. The 13th and last edition of the 16th century appeared in Magdeburg in 1543. Written early in his career, this pamphlet appears to have made Osiander's reputation as a prominent Lutheran reformer.Osiander was a German Lutheran theologian who studied in Leipzig, Altenburg and Ingolstadt before being ordained as a priest in 1520. In the same year he began work at an Augustinian convent in Nürnberg as a Hebrew tutor. In 1522, he was appointed to the church of St. Lorenz in Nürnberg, as vicar of S. Lorenz parish, and at the same time publicly declared himself to be a Lutheran. He also played a prominent role in the debate which led to the city of Nürmberg's adoption of the Reformation in the same year1525, and also in the same year Osiander married. Later he was appointed as professor of the newly founded Königsberg University. Osiander lived and worked in Königsberg until his death in 1552. Osiander published a corrected edition of the Vulgate Bible, with notes, in 1522 and a Harmony of the Gospels in 1537. In 1543, Osiander oversaw the publication of the famous and controversial book De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the revolution of celestial spheres) by Copernicus. The work starts with a preface by Georg Pessler, probst of S. Sebald and Hector Pömers, Probst of S. Lorenz, Nürnberg, dated 21 October 1524 (f. A1v-A6v, followed by the chapters on the reformation of the Mass:- f. A7r-F1v: 'Gründe für die Änderungen an der Messe'. - f.
Bibliotheca Magica Casanatense n. 379.

Bembo Pietro
PROSE NELLE QUALI SI RAGIONA DELLA VOLGAR LINGUE
Venice Giovanni Tacuino 1525 - First Edition. Folio, in fine 17th century vellum, sewn on three visible supports and with evidence of three paper ties, with some very minor restoration to the head and tail of the spine. Foliated I - XCIIII and collating A - Q5 (lacking the final blank leaf Q6. A very attractive copy with some early (probable 17th c.) annotations in the margins, a the first leaf slightly mellowed or soiled, unobtrusive dampstaining effecting the outer margins only and with some minor expected wear to the 17th century vellum. ONE OF THE PARAMOUNT ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE HISTORY OF ITALIAN LITERATURE AND AN IMPORTANT TREATISE ON THE TUSCAN VERNACULAR. BemboÕs work is one o f the most influential demonstrations of literary excellence of the Italian vernacular. In it Bembo derides the excessive cultivation of Latin and instead extols the beauty and charm of the Tuscan dialect, exemplified in the trecento by Dante, Petrarch and Boccassio. He also establishes standard rules for spelling and syntax. The work was frequently reprinted throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, but this first edition was apparently seen through the press by Bembo himself. It is said that he revised much of the text during it printing. The printing itself is most handsome in a large Roman typeface.

Jacob Ben Hayyim of Tunis
Mikraot gedolot: Torah Neviim u-Khetuvim [Biblia Rabbinica or Rabbinic Bible].
Daniel Bomberg, Venice 1525 - RARE: Deluxe edition, with additional three volume facsimile-set (see below). Contemporary binding, rare in such good condition. This is the first Jewish Rabbinic Bible (see below). Folio. Unpaginated (ca. 1894 p). Contemporary stamped and tooled calf binding, rebacked with the original spine. Deluxe copy with thicker cotton rack paper and wide margins, retained at the bottom. Gilt gauffred page edges. Raised bands. Woodcut illustrated title page with three-dimensional gate. Woodcut illustrated title to each book of the work. Second woodcut-illustrated title page to beginning of Ketuvim/Hageography, also with three-dimensional gate. None of the title pages mention publisher and publishing place. Instead, it is mentioned at the end of the last text page. The last text page is followed by an apparatus. Blank page before beginning and after end of Ketuvim/Hageography. This Bible is said to be the first Jewish Rabbinic Bible. It is groundbreaking in its layout and format, whereby the Hebrew source text is Masoretic [i.e. with vocalization]. Furthermore, the Hebrew source text is in the middle of the page, surrounded by Rabbinic commentary to all sides. All further edition of [Rabbinic] Hebrew Bibles have been printed this way. Contains most of Nevi'im [Prophets] and all of Ketuvim [Hageography]. The books are: -Isaiah/ Yeshayahu -Jeremia/ Yirmiyahu -Ezekiel -The Twelve Minor Prophets [Tari Asher] -Psalms/Tehillim -Proverbs/Mishlei -Job/Iyov -Ruth -Lamentations/Eikhah -Ecclesiastes/Kohelet -Esther -Daniel -Ezra-Nehemia -Chronicles Hence, it contains 14 out of the 24 Books of the Tanakh, missing the Five Books of Moses, Joshua/Yehoshua, Judges/Shoftim, Samuel/Shmuel and Kings/Malakhim. The missing books are supplied in a three-volume set of the only facsimile-edition ever published [Moshe Goshen-Guttstein. Jerusalem: Makor Publishing Ltd. 1972], containing the Five Books of Moses and all the Prophets. In Hebrew. In fine condition. The first Biblia Rabbinica, printed by Bomberg (as is this edition) in 1516-7 was edited by the apostate Jew Felix Pratensis and contained the Imprimatum of the Pope. Bomberg realized that these two facts marginalized the Great Bible from the Jewish market. He therefore employed Jacob b. Hayyim ibn Adonijah, newly arrived from Venice (after being driven out of Spain and then Tunis) as editor of the Second Biblia Rabbinica, which is the edition at hand. A meticulous and most knowledgeable Jewish editor, Joseph b. Hayyim went to great pains to secure as many codices with a masorah as possible. The Second Biblia Rabbinica is the first to present the Massorah. The text of this edition became the standard Massoretic text for all subsequent editions. It was received with acclaim by the Jewish market. This Bible is said to be the first "Jewish" rabbinic Bible. The Mikraot Gedolot of Ben Hayyim served as the textus receptus for the King James Version of the Bible in 1611. "No textual redaactor of modern days who professes to edith the Hebrew text according to the Massorah can deviate from it [this edition] without giving conclusive justification for doing so." (Ginsburg) On the editor (from the Encyclopedia Judaica): Jacob Ben Hayyim (1470-1538). He left his native Tunesia in consequence of the persecutions that broke out there at the beginning of the sixteenth century. After residing at Rome and Florence he settled at Venice, where he was engaged as corrector of the Hebrew press of Daniel Bomberg. Late in life he embraced Christianity. Jacob's name is known chiefly in connection with his edition of the Rabbinical Bible (1524-25), which he supplied with Masoretic notes and an introduction which treats of the Masorah and of the discrepancies between the Talmudists and the Masorah. In Hebrew. Minor worming, scuffing and rubbing to binding. Title-page crudely repaired and mounted on tab, not affecting text. Ex-libris stamp to title page.In near fine condition. Fantastico esemplare. "Woodcut, 1525, dated on plate at lower edge. Magnificent work, particularly disputed, printed on contemporary laid paper with shield with crown watermark, with complete borderline, tiny restoration on the upper right corner, in excellent conditions. The cataloguing of this work is extremely controversial; it has been first ascribed to Albrecht Durer by Bartsch; then to Hans Sebald Beham by Pauli. Zurwesten has lately included it again in Durers work, considering it the most important piece of the master in the field of ex-libris. Nowadays, the experts agree that Durer himself prepared the drawing of this work, afterwards carved by Hieronymus Andreae Resch, as it is shown by the monogram R A 1525 (Resch, year 1525). In the northern Europe of the first Renaissance,a large group of artists was used to realize many ex-libris, much in demand among famous people to identify their possession of books and pieces of art. Starting from the year 1490, we have had many examples of the genre, mainly from the school of Nuremberg and particularly from the so called Little Masters; their aesthetic qualities have had a great development in the years, increasing the number of ornaments and the perfection of the carving. Hector Pomer was a Provost of the church of St. Laurence in Nuremberg; that is why here we find St. Laurence portrayed with the gridiron and the palm of martyrdom, according to the classical iconography. Excellent work." Bartsch 163, Pauli 1352, von Zurwesten p. 24. 197 295

JUSTINUS, J., A. PROBUS (= C. NEPOS), &
TROGI POMPEI EXTERNAE HISTORIAE IN COMPENDIUM AB IUSTINO REDACTAE. EXTERNORUM IMPERATORUM VITAE. A EMYLIO PROBO AUTHORE. P. VELLEI PATERCULI HISTORIAE RO. DUO VOLUMINA NUPER REPERTA, DILIGENTISSIMEQUE; EXCUSA CUM INDICE OMNIA QUAE DIGNA SUNT NOTATU COPIOSISSIMO. FLORENCE, PHILIPPO GIUNTA, 1525.
8vo. Dark green morocco, spine gilt, comprising a gilt monogram, richly decorated gilt borders on sides, gilt inner dentelles, g.e. (BRADEL). Woodcut vignette on title and on verso last leaf. (2), 103 (=203), (15, 8), lf. 105 (=205) - 267, (1) lvs. Collected edition of three works by classical authors, Velleius Paterculus first published here in Italy. Both Justinus and Nepos are here in an edition of "considerable authority" (Dibdin), based on the 1522 Aldus edition, with corrections. Ad 1) In trogi Pompei historiam epitomen by Justinus. Justinus collected, as he writes in his preface, the most important and interesting passages from the Historiae Philippicae by Pompeius Trogus, a work which is now lost. In the 3rd century Justinus summarized this voluminous work of 44 books, and his epitome was extremely popular in the Middle Ages. Trogus's work originally concentrated on the rise and history of the Macedonian monarchy, but Justinus digressed and elaborated to the history of the Roman empire. The work was first published in 1470, Venice. Ad 2) De vita excellentium imperatorum by Cornelius Nepos. Until 1569 the Vita were attributed to Aemylius Probus, but it is now generally accepted that the author is Cornelius Nepos (99-24 B.C.). Nepos was well acquainted with Cicero, Pomponius Atticus and Catullus. The present work, together with two biographies on Cato and Atticus, is all that is left from his writings. Nepos is the first biographer known by name, and he was also the first biographer to compare the Romans with foreigners. The work was first published at Venice, in 1471. Ad 3) Historiae Romanae duo volumina ad M. Vinici, um cos. pro generum Tib. caesaris by Velleius Paterculus (19 B.C.-31 A.D.). The Historiae is one of the most important documents on the age of Augustus and Tiberius. Beatus Rhenanus discovered the manuscript in the Alsatian Convent of Murbach in 1515, and he published the work in collaboration with Froben in 1520. The manuscript, returned to the convent after publication, is lost ever since. Part I of the Historiae deals with the history from early times, the Orient and Greece, to the fall of Carthage and Corinth in 146 B.C. Part II treats the period 146 B.C.-30 A.D., especially emphasizing the period marked by the death of Caesar (44 B.C.) and the death of Augustus (14 A.D.). As Velleius writes on the history of more recent times, his work becomes more and more detailed, and focuses on the history of the Roman empire in stead of universal history. The work consists of some rather interesting portraits of famous Romans, modelled after the Annales by Tacitus. The biographical interest of the author is expanded upon with two excursuses on history, including the most famous passages from his work on Roman colonization, and three excursuses on literary topics. The excessive flattery of especially Tiberius can be considered a counterbalance for the diatribes against Tiberius of Tacitus and Suetonius. Renouard's copy, from the libraries of Heber and Abdy. Fine copy.- (Spine sl. discoloured; faint ms. owner's name on title). Adams J725 & P414; STC Italian, p. 683; Renouard suppl, p. XLIX no. 80; cf. Renouard, p. 96 no. 9; Dibdin II, p. 138.

[Novellino].
Le ciento novelle antike.
Bologna, Girolamo Benedetti, agosto 1525. Gamba 685; Passano, p. 130. Exceedingly rare first edition of the oldest collection of Italian tales, written by an anonimous Florentine author at the beginning of the 13th century. "
