Edizione assai importante che contiene frammenti di archeologia, lessico e grammatica che altrimenti sarebbero andati perduti. E' inoltre uno degli ultimi libri stampati e rivisti da Aldo Manuzio prima della sua morte nel 1515. Lieve ombreggiatura in alto alle prime 8 carte a sparire. Il quaterno b è legato dopo la c per errore. - Venise, Alde, 1515 In-8 de (16) ff., 348 pp., maroquin lavallière, grand décor de maroquin noir mosaïqué composé d'entrelacs s'articulant autour d'un grand médaillon central ovale dessiné par un jeu d'entrelacs, enroulements et fleurons de maroquin mosaïqué bleu et rouge, dos à nerfs orné de même, coupes et bordures décorées, tranches dorées (Capé). Première édition aldine des œuvres de Lactance. Elle a été donnée par Giambattista Egnatio, auteur de deux longues préfaces dont la première est l'éloge funèbre d'Alde qui venait de mourir trois mois auparavant. Egnatio fut un familier d'Alde Manuce et de sa famille ainsi que l'ami de Jean Grolier dont la bibliothèque comprenait de nombreuses édition aldines. Cet exemplaire ne comporte pas, à la suite, les 48 pages de l'Apologétique de Trébutien. Exemplaire de toute beauté, revêtu d'une spectaculaire reliure mosaïquée signée de Capé. Toutefois, le décor et la dorure reviennent à Marius-Michel père qui, avant de s'associer avec son fils en 1866, travaillait comme doreur pour les plus grands relieurs. Inspiré des décors du XVIe siècle, le travail du "doreur des doreurs" manifeste une virtuosité et une justesse de main extraordinaires. In folio, legatura novecentesca in piena pelle con filetti e quattro nervi al dorso, filetto semplice ai piatti a contenere una larga cornice a fregi oro e con quattro finalini; fiore oro al centro di ambedue i piatti. Frontespizio con nome dell'a e fregetto in rosso, tutto a caratteri gotici, incisione con San Bartolomeo. Cc. 10 n.n.+ CXXVIII della prima parte che sono arricchite da 6 belle incisioni a piena pagina + CXIII della seconda parte (Sonetti e Canzone de misser Francescho Petrarcha) ma mancanti la LXVI e la LXXI + 3 n.n. Moltissime le iniziali xilografiche. L'ultima carta ha ricevuto, non recentemente, un eccellente restauro con perfetto ripristino di alcune parole, piccolissimo altro restauro, di altrettanta buona qualita', al margine fel frontespizio, a piede. - approx. 39.5 x 53.5 cm., a multimedia work with ms. additions and illustrations; composed of fragments of largely early nineteenth century prints with one significant section possibly from an Albrecht Durer print dated 1515, coloured nineteenth century scraps, cobalt blue and red paint and sepia ink. c. 1850s. In very good, crisp and clean condition, one large, old pinhole on each corner. Provenance; Burne Jones family by tradition. British. Densely overlaid and complex composition with a lot of blood that drips from the wings of clustered groups of angels, doves etc. The Durer print has an elaborate border with Herakles fighting the Harpies which in turn surrounds a rectangular manuscript section with a collage and a crucifix dripping with blood at dead centre. A small print of a dove is stuck on top of another small and surreally elegant print of Jesus preaching in front of a crowd. Pasted onto this is a smaller figure of Christ with hand coloured red robes within a burst of wings, green rays and peals that are also dripping blood. In turn, the blood then drips onto a small print of a ship foundering in stormy seas and heading for the rocks, with an imposing lighthouse in silhouette. A background screed of chants in dark sepia ink intones dark thoughts from the Book of Revelations.

Venise, Giacopo Pentio de Leucho pour Melchior Sessa, 1515. - 1 vol. petit in-4°, veau fauve, dos lisse orné de doubles filets dorés, encadrement d'un filet doré sur les plats, tranches dorées. Reliure du XIXe siècle, charnière sup. fendillée. Titre orné d'une grande figure gravée sur bois, 270 vignettes gravées sur bois dans le texte, lettrines à décor floral et une grande lettrine historiée, marque de l'imprimeur (au chat et à la souris) au r° du dernier feuillet, impression en caractères gothiques, (94) ff. Signatures : [A-L]8 M6. Feuillet de titre lavé et remonté (petite restauration en tête), qq. mouillures angulaires en début de volume. Ex-libris ms. du XVIe s. au v° du titre (encre pâle). Belle édition ornée de très nombreuses vignettes gravées sur bois. Outre la très belle figure du titre qui représente un savant expliquant sa science à un personnage tenant une sphère armillaire, l'iconographie se compose de 145 vignettes représentant des constellations (répétées plusieurs fois), de 54 figures rectangulaires (66 x 103 mm) et de 69 figures (51 x 61 mm) qui représentent symboliquement des conjonctions planétaires ou la position des planètes dans le zodiaque, d'une figure astrologique et d'une figure astronomique. Excepté la première figure, qui avait déjà été utilisée pour le De virtutibus herbarum d'Albert le Grand de 1509, les illustrations ont été spécifiquement gravées pour cette édition aux frais de Melchior Sessa. Albumazar était un astronome arabe du IXe siècle qui vivait dans l'actuel Afghanistan. Il était l'ami et le disciple d'Al'Kindi. Sa renommée en tant qu'astrologue fut internationale et ses traités furent très appréciés en Occident au Moyen âge. Dans le De magnis conjunctionibus (Des grandes conjonctions), il étudie les conjonctions des planètes dans l'histoire (passée et future) et expose des doctrines originales sur l'origine et la fin du monde. Pour Albumazar, le monde a été créé et il a un début et une fin, marquée par la présence des sept planètes dans le signe zodiacal du bélier. C'est dans cet ouvrage qu'il détaille le système des "parts" réservées à chaque individu à la naissance : il donne la description des 97 parts et présente plusieurs prophéties pour les temps à venir. L'une d'elle prévoyait de grands bouleversements sociaux en 1789. L'ouvrage est divisé en huit livres qui traitent successivement des prophéties et de leurs lois, de l'ascension et de la chute des rois et des dynasties, des effets des conjonctions planétaires, des effets de chaque signe zodiacal à leur ascendant, de l'influence des planètes, des "transits", des révolutions de l'année et des signes zodiacaux ascendants. La première édition de ce texte parut à Augsbourg en 1489. La traduction latine est de J. Engel. Belle impression de Giacopo Pentio de Leucho aux frais de Melchior Sessa, qui utilisait la célèbre marque au chat et à la souris. Vélin ivoire de l'époque, dos lisse avec les noms des auteurs manuscrits, nerfs en veau apparents aux charnières, restes de liens en cuir, titre manuscrit sur le plat supérieur, tranches colorées et ciselées. Belle édition réalisée sur l'Aldine et jugée rare par Brunet et Graesse, dont certains passages ont été corrigés à partir de manuscrits, imprimée dans un élégant caractère italique. Les écrits des agronomes latins sont importants car le poids de leurs préjugés et de leurs superstitions pèsera longtemps sur les habitudes d'élevage et ce au moins jusqu'au dix septième siècle avec les théories de fécondation des juments citées par Winter et même après, avec l'incompréhensible croyance en l'existence de l'Hippomane, toujours vivace en plein dix huitième siècle. First edition edited and translated by the German humanist (and musician) Ottmar Nachtgall.Nachtgall introduced the study of Greek in Strassburg, "preparing Greek grammars and texts for the use of adults interested in learning the language" (Contemporaries of Erasmus). In this he worked closely with the Strassburg printer Johann Schott who - along with Matthias Schürer, likewise from Strassburg - was the first to print continuous Greek texts in Germany.Lucian was a favourite with the humanists: More and Erasmus also translated selected dialogues, and certainly his influence can be seen both in the Utopia and Moriae Encomium. As Professor Trapp has written in his recent Panizzi lecture, "Among Greek authors, there can be no doubt that More's favourite was Lucian, in early days at least. The witty Syrian rhetorician, set to 'drive and whoop idolatry out of the world' and 'show all the gods and goddesses to be no better than a company of gypsies' looks a rather uncharacteristic choice for someone who was later to be so much involved with defence of his Church's views. [but] in his dedication More writes of the delight and instruction to be got from Lucian, who is the model moral censor, not arrogant like the philosophers or wanton like the poets, but skilful in thrusting deep without wounding. Marca del impresor Petit en la portada, xilografía de esfera armillar en verso de a5 rodeada por Astronomía, Urania y Ptolomeo, mapa del cielo y las estrellas en b5r, mapa de los trópicos en l1r, otras xilografías al texto incluyendo la representación de los eclipses, figuras geométricas, etc. Encuadernación en pergamino moderno. Magnífica edición de la "Esfera del Mundo", la obra básica de astronomía, anotada y adicionada por el aragonés Pedro Ciruelo. Antes del texto hay unos versos latinos de Pedro de Lerma Burgense, sigue la dedicatoria a Jacobo Ramírez de Guzmán y a Alfonso Ossorio, y un erudito discurso sobre las ciencias matemáticas. Sacrobosco fue un eminente autor del siglo XIII nacido en Inglaterra y conocido como John Holywood; fue el primero en calcular las discrepancias existentes entre el calendario Juliano y el calendario solar actual, proponiendo un remedio prácticamente idéntico al que puso en práctica el Papa Gregorio XIII en el siglo dieciséis. La obra de Sacrobosco toma numerosas ideas de Ptolomeo, pero a la vez muestra un gran conocimiento de las obras de los astrónomos arábigos medievales; incluye la descripción, naturaleza y forma de la tierra, la división de ella en sus zonas climáticas, y el posicionamiento de las estrellas.Ciruelo hizo sobre el texto de Sacrobosco numerosas consideraciones matemáticas, astronómicas y filosóficas. Pedro Ciruelo (1470-1548) nació y empezó sus estudios en Daroca, los terminó en Salamanca y pasó posteriormente a perfeccionarse a París, en cuya universidad fue acogido muy favorablemente por sus conocimientos matemáticos, que le reputaron merecida fama en todo Europa. Regresó Ciruelo a España en 1509, después de haber pasado diez años en París. Referencias: Palau 284124 equivocando la paginación; European Americana 515/15 localiza sólo un ejemplar (New York Library); no hay ejemplar en la British Library ni en Mortimer, French Books. No en Brunet ni Graesse, quien cita la edición de Alcalá de 1526. No en Picatoste quien sin embargo cita vagamente una edición del mismo Petit de 1508.

Venise, Giacopo Pentio de Leucho pour Melchior Sessa, 1515. - 1 vol. petit in-4°, veau fauve, dos lisse orné de doubles filets dorés, encadrement d'un filet doré sur les plats, tranches dorées. Reliure du XIXe siècle, charnière sup. fendillée. Titre orné d'une grande figure gravée sur bois, 270 vignettes gravées sur bois dans le texte, lettrines à décor floral et une grande lettrine historiée, marque de l'imprimeur (au chat et à la souris) au r° du dernier feuillet, impression en caractères gothiques, (94) ff. Signatures : [A-L]8 M6. Feuillet de titre lavé et remonté (petite restauration en tête), qq. mouillures angulaires en début de volume. Ex-libris ms. du XVIe s. au v° du titre (encre pâle). Belle édition ornée de très nombreuses vignettes gravées sur bois. Outre la très belle figure du titre qui représente un savant expliquant sa science à un personnage tenant une sphère armillaire, l'iconographie se compose de 145 vignettes représentant des constellations (répétées plusieurs fois), de 54 figures rectangulaires (66 x 103 mm) et de 69 figures (51 x 61 mm) qui représentent symboliquement des conjonctions planétaires ou la position des planètes dans le zodiaque, d'une figure astrologique et d'une figure astronomique. Excepté la première figure, qui avait déjà été utilisée pour le De virtutibus herbarum d'Albert le Grand de 1509, les illustrations ont été spécifiquement gravées pour cette édition aux frais de Melchior Sessa. Albumazar était un astronome arabe du IXe siècle qui vivait dans l'actuel Afghanistan. Il était l'ami et le disciple d'Al'Kindi. Sa renommée en tant qu'astrologue fut internationale et ses traités furent très appréciés en Occident au Moyen âge. Dans le De magnis conjunctionibus (Des grandes conjonctions), il étudie les conjonctions des planètes dans l'histoire (passée et future) et expose des doctrines originales sur l'origine et la fin du monde. Pour Albumazar, le monde a été créé et il a un début et une fin, marquée par la présence des sept planètes dans le signe zodiacal du bélier. C'est dans cet ouvrage qu'il détaille le système des "parts" réservées à chaque individu à la naissance : il donne la description des 97 parts et présente plusieurs prophéties pour les temps à venir. L'une d'elle prévoyait de grands bouleversements sociaux en 1789. L'ouvrage est divisé en huit livres qui traitent successivement des prophéties et de leurs lois, de l'ascension et de la chute des rois et des dynasties, des effets des conjonctions planétaires, des effets de chaque signe zodiacal à leur ascendant, de l'influence des planètes, des "transits", des révolutions de l'année et des signes zodiacaux ascendants. La première édition de ce texte parut à Augsbourg en 1489. La traduction latine est de J. Engel. Belle impression de Giacopo Pentio de Leucho aux frais de Melchior Sessa, qui utilisait la célèbre marque au chat et à la souris. Woodcut printer's device (Sylvestre 132). Printed in Roman font with the surrounding commentaries printed in Gothic. Text contains decorative initials. Bound in contemporary blind stamped paneled calf boards; re-backed preserving original spine. Later antique endpapers with inscription on front-free endpaper dated "1925"; front and rear blank fly-leaves worn. Pages are generally clean with occasional marginalia in an old hand (i.e. several small inscriptions written on the title page); minor spotting; lower corner of leaf c7 clipped in margin;. The hinges and inner margins to the first gathering are neatly strengthened / repaired. The outer edges to this same gathering show some wear - i.e. a few marginal tears (sealed), and light soiling. The bottom margins on conjugate leaves a2 and a7 are trimmed about ½" (12 mm). Anicius Manlius Boethius (480-524) was a late Roman philosopher and statesman. He became embroiled in a plot against Theodoric, the Ostrogothic ruler of Rome, and was eventually executed. Boethius wrote his most famous work, the "Consolation of Philosophy," while awaiting his fate in prison. The five sections discuss the capriciousness of fortune, the influence of good and evil, and the nature of God's control over the universe (i.e. free will, providence and fate). The work employs the Platonic notion of an ascent of the soul to the Godhead through a process of contemplation and reflection. The imagery is predominately pagan; however, the author himself was strongly influenced by Christian thought. Boethius's work was immensely influential throughout the middle ages. Commentaries are provided by Josse Badius (1462-1535) and Thomas Wallensis (the latter wrongly ascribed to Thomas Aquinas). The "Ascensio explanato" has separate signatures and divisional title page. Fascinating map, which was used to illustrate the voyage of Lopo Soares d' Albegeria in 1515 on behalf of the King of Portugal by the Portuguese historian Joan de Barros. The map provides a highly detailed look at Ceilon, based upon the work of this early 16th Century explorer. In the early 18th Century, Vander Aa reproduced a number of rare manuscript and printed accounts of 16th Century Travel to America and included marvelous decorative maps, which were typically based upon contemporary cartographic information. Many of the earliest voyages of exploration which are impossibly rare to find in the original editions can be found in Vander Aa's works, which are now becoming increasing rare. s. l. s. e. 1515 - Placchetta in 16° (cm 10 x 14), copertina ricavata da Exultet o Salterio settecentesco, in rosso e nero, pp 16, senza paginazione e con segnatura discontinua, stemma di papa Medici al frontespizio, esemplare in buone condizioni, carta brunita, parzialmente in barbe. Il volumetto contiene il testo, impresso in caratteri gotici, delle deliberazioni su tre importanti argomenti trattati durante questa fase conclusiva del Concilio di Trento: si riuscì a sostituire la Sanzione Pragmatica di Bourges con un concordato. Il concilio inoltre emise decreti nell’ambito della fede e della morale. Erano già stati emanati numerosi decreti papali a favore dei "Montes pietatis" ("Monti di pietà"). C'erano però ripensamenti contro il modo con cui questi monti dei pegni si mantenevano senza danni. Il soggetto scottante è su Usura e i "Monti di pietà"; citiamo dal testo: "Alcuni maestri e dottori infatti sostengono che non sono leciti quei Monti di pietà nei quali, passato un certo tempo, si esige dai poveri destinatari del prestito in più del capitale un tanto per ogni libbra prestata; in questo modo infatti essi non vanno esenti dalla colpa di usura e da un preciso peccato di ingiustizia. Si dà infatti usura in senso proprio quando dell’uso di una cosa che non produce niente, ci si sforza di ricavare, senza alcuna fatica e pericolo, un guadagno e un frutto". Per quanto riguarda la "Prammatica sanzione", dietro la spinta di re Carlo VII di Francia l'Assemblea del clero, riunita nel maggio/giugno 1438 a Bourges, aveva redatto 23 articoli ispirati al concilio di Basilea e nei quali in particolare si sosteneva il conciliarismo. Il 7 giugno 1438 il re sottoscrisse questa cosiddetta "Sanzione Pragmatica di Bourges" che era precipuamente a favore degli interessi del senato regio e dell'università di Parigi. Dopo che la contesa tra i papi - che non riconobbero mai la Sanzione - e la Francia sotto Luigi XII fu chiusa, il successore di questi, Francesco I, riconobbe la bolla di Leone X oggetto del nostro esemplare. In essa la "Sanzione Pragmatica" viene dichiarata invalida e viene confermata la bolla "Unam sanctam" di Bonifacio VIII. Ultimo, importantissimo documento, quello concernente i libri proibiti, preludente all'istituzione dell'"Index". Nessun esemplare di questi documenti in SBN, che cita edizioni in 4° ad opera dell'impressore Silber, ne' in altre biblioteche consultate. "Enciclopedia dei Papi", Treccani 2000.

Précieuse réunion de 4 ouvrages très rares de l'humaniste et philosophe Pierre de La Ramée (plus connu sous le nom de Petrus Ramus), né à Paris en 1515, mort assassiné dans le massacre de la Saint-Barthélemy, le 24 Août 1572. En 1551 Ramus, grâce à l'appui d'Henri II, avait été nommé professeur de philosophie au Collège de France malgré l'opposition de la Sorbonne, hostile à sa liberté d'esprit, à ses idées non-conformistes et à ses critiques de l'enseignement officiel. Ces leçons, que Ramus fera publier, auront un immense succès et lui vaudront une réputation européenne. "Il était surtout remarquable lorsque en présence d'une foule compacte d'auditeurs, il interprétait avec une grande dignité de gestes et de langage, les grands écrivains latins et singulièrement Ciceron. C'est par ce dernier qu'il commença ses cours au Collège de France" (Waddington). Ce volume contient 4 des "publications savantes" (Brunet) auxquelles donna lieu l'enseignement de Ramus au Collège de France, dont celle, rarissime, corespondant à la première leçon ( 25 août 1551), qui portait sur le "Pro Caio Rabirio" de Ciceron. Elle manque à la BNF et Waddington, le bibliographe de Ramus, dit à son sujet: "Edition très rare que je n'avais vue mentionnée nulle part, avant d'en rencontrer un exemplaire à la bibliothèque de Reims". First and only edition of a treatise on certain salts sometimes found in crystaline "efflorescences" from the surface of the sea, which Dioscorides and Galen had recommended for the treatment of skin diseases. The Hessian doctor and botanist Valerius Cordus (1515-1544) left this treatise unpublished at his premature death, and Conrad Gesner added a preface and "Corollarium" for its posthumous publication in his compilation, De Omni Rerum Fossilium Genere, but the treatise with corollarium is separately signed and foliated for separate publication as well. Gessner’s corollarium, slightly longer than the treatise itself, refutes the popular notion that these salts were the sperm of whales.A very good copy with generous margins. A curious medical and mineralogical treatise, with an amusing link to whales.

- Large printer's device on title-page, almost full-page cut of an armillary sphere with three figures, and numerous small astronomical diagrams and illustrations, a few historiated initials on criblé ground. 4to."lxxviii" [i. e. 76] Modern boards. 1515. The standard work on cosmography in the 16th century which went through numerous editions in several different languages. The author was an eminent 13th century astronomer born in England as John Holywood who was the first to calculate the discrepancy between the Julian calendar and the actual solar year; he suggested a remedy which was almost identical to that devised by Pope Gregory XIII over 350 years later. Sacrobosco's work paraphrased ideas of Ptolemy, but also displays knowledge of the works of mediaeval Arabic astronomers; it includes a description on the nature and shape of the earth, its annual revolution, the rising and setting of the stars and the division of the earth into climactic zones. This edition is a reissue of Petit's 1508 edition and incorporates the commentaries of Pedro Sanchez Ciruelo and Pierre d'Ailly. Provenance. 16th and 17th century inscriptions on title-page, one cut out and repaired, Waterstaining affecting inner margins of many leaves, sometimes touching text, piece torn away from outer corner of last leaf (no loss of text). An extremely rare German translation of Giovanni Rota's LA VITA DEL SOPHIA RE DE PERSIA, following an Italian edition of 1508. The text consists of reports concerning the Persian and Turkish empires sent by Rota, a doctor who had resided in Aleppo, to Leonardo Loredan, the Doge of Venice from 1501-21. Also included are brief reports from other regions of the Near East. First published in Rome in 1508, another Italian edition was printed in Venice circa 1515, and a French translation appeared in Jean Lemaire de Belge's LE TRAICTIE INTITULE DE LA DIFFERE[N]CE DES SCISMES ET DES CONCILLES DE LEGLISE, printed in Lyon in 1511. It has been suggested that Rota's writings were published in part to create interest in Christian Europe in a new Crusade. These reports, particularly the present German translation printed in newsletter format, can also be seen as responding to a market strongly interested in reports from the Near East and Asia. Sacrobosco fue un eminente autor del siglo XIII nacido en Inglaterra y conocido como John Holywood; fue el primero en calcular las discrepancias existentes entre el calendario Juliano y el calendario solar actual, proponiendo un remedio prácticamente idéntico al que puso en práctica el Papa Gregorio XIII en el siglo dieciséis. La obra de Sacrobosco toma numerosas ideas de Ptolomeo, pero a la vez muestra un gran conocimiento de las obras de los astrónomos arábigos medievales; incluye la descripción, naturaleza y forma de la tierra, la división de ella en sus zonas climáticas, y el posicionamiento de las estrellas.Ciruelo hizo sobre el texto de Sacrobosco numerosas consideraciones matemáticas, astronómicas y filosóficas. Pedro Ciruelo (1470-1548) nació y empezó sus estudios en Daroca, los terminó en Salamanca y pasó posteriormente a perfeccionarse a París, en cuya universidad fue acogido muy favorablemente por sus conocimientos matemáticos, que le reputaron merecida fama en todo Europa. Regresó Ciruelo a España en 1509, después de haber pasado diez años en París. This copy is in the second state with 'duernionem' correctly printed on the recto of the final leaf. This publication was among the last to be seen through the press by Aldus himself before his death in 1515 and The Attic Nights is effectively a high-powered commonplace book, valuable as a sourcebook for classical conventions as well as some scraps of texts which would otherwise be lost. This copy has antique gilt gophered edges and has recently been recased in a high quality, period-style vellum binding with red morocco spine label and gilt decorations. The gophering has ensured that the margins are wide and the text remains bright and fresh. There is some staining to the pages, particularly to the lower quarter of the text block. The last four gatherings appear to have been washed. There is an ownership inscription apparently by 'Leonardo Canyo 1662' at the bottom of the title page below the anchor and dolphin device, with one further annotation additionally signed 'Leonardo' Taken together this is an extremely good looking copy of an important Renaissance publication by the greatest of all scholar-printers. (2), XCVII, (1), CXXX, XXXV lvs. Ad 1: Second edition of the most influential work of one of the earliest great humanists in Northern Europe, Rudolphus Agricola, Latin for Roelof Huisman (1444-1485), edited by his pupil Martinus Dorpius (1485-1525). Born at Baflo, near Groningen, Agricola started his studies at the celebrated St. Maartens School at Groningen. In 1456 Agricola matriculated at Erfurt, later at Cologne (1462), and at Louvain, and in 1468 he traveled to Italy, where he became a protégé of the Prince d'Este in Ferrara, and a pupil of Theodor Gaza. Agricola returned to Germany in 1479, spending some time at Dillingen, where he completed his most important work, the De inventione dialectica, which was first printed in Cologne by H. Alopecius, some time before 1510. It is a very influential study of the proper place of logic in rhetorical studies, and it was of great significance for the education of the early humanists. It is a highly original, critical and systematic treatment of all ideas and concepts related to dialectica. Later he became professor at the University in Heidelberg. Erasmus admired Agricola, calling him the first to bring a breath of better literature from Italy, and eulogizing him in his Adagia I, iv 39. This second edition (the only one entitled Dialectica in stead of De inventione dialectica) is printed by the important printer Theodorus (Dirk) Martens at Louvain, who has printed many early humanistic works in 'the new (roman) letter', explicitly mentioned in the colophon of this work: ". imprimebat Louvanii Theodoricus Martinus Alustensis charactribus (ut est videre) faberrimis". Huisman lists no less than 82 editions prior to 1600 (incl. the epithome). Ad 2: First edition of one of the two first juridical works by Andreas Alciatus. In modern times better known as 'the inventor of emblems', Andrea Alciati (1492-1550) was the great humanistic interpreter of Roman law. From 1504 on he studied law in Milan. Inscriptions on title page (one a latin motto) and on one other leaf in two or possibly three early hands. Minor (partly patched) worming to foot of first three leaves (woodcut not affected but with small losses to a handful of letters) title page faintly soiled otherwise excellent the binding clean and sound the leaves fresh and with deep impressions of the type. First published ca. 1475 this treatise explains the origin of the custom of using Holy Water in church ceremonies and defends its healing efficacy to counter sterility and other lamentable conditions. Turrecremata (Juan de Torquemada 1388-1468) was a Spanish Dominican monk who studied in Paris. He attended several church councils and defended the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception at the council of Basel. He became a cardinal in 1439 and was known for his charity. Incunabular editions of this work were published without illustration and ours may be the first printing to be illustrated. Nuremberg 1515 - THE ONLY KNOWN MAP TO ATTEMPT TO SHOW THE GLOBE AS A FLAT SPHERE Woodcut on two joined sheets: 27" x 353/4" References: Lloyd Arnold Brown, The World Encompassed, exh. cat. This magnificent wall-map of the world was the result of a collaboration between two prominent figures in the vibrant intellectual ambit of sixteenth-century Nuremberg: Albrecht Dürer, the celebrated artist, and Johann Stabius, court historian and astronomer to Emperor Maximilian I. Geographically, the map is an iteration of the classic Ptolemaic schema, but its decoration and geometric projection grant it exceptional status in the history of cartography. Dürer and Stabius were attempting a novel feat: to show the world as known to a scientific imagination but never yet seen by man. To modern eyes the map is akin to an image of the world as seen from space, but in Dürer's time even the hot-air balloon was centuries from invention. On the map, Dürer's artistic embellishment alludes to the godlike nature of the vantage point, as the wind-heads appear like angels occupying the heavens outside the earthly realm. The geometry of the sphere is used here to create the illusion of seeing the world from a new perspective, and the playful use of angelic faces invites the viewer to participate in the novel experience of an omnipotent window onto the world. Dürer and Stabius based their map on Ptolemaic principles even while they attempted to surpass the ancient geographer, extrapolating to construct a projection he had not advocated, yet utilizing his coordinate system. They drew supplementary information from a recent cartographic project that had drawn quite a bit of attention: the globe known as the "Erdapfel" ("Earth apple") completed in Nuremberg in 1492 by Martin Behaim, a patrician astronomer. Behaim's globe was the first spherical representation of the earth since antiquity. Displayed with considerable civic pride in the town hall of Nuremberg, the city where Dürer and Stabius also conceived their own unique representation of the world, the "Erdapfel" was surely influential in their own goal to represent the earth as a sphere reduced to two dimensions. Unlike Behaim's globe, however, their map was not a reproduction of the earth on a small scale, but a more sophisticated creation of an illusionistic sphere on paper. No sixteenth-century impressions of the map survive, but the original woodblocks are preserved in the National Library in Vienna. A small handful of impressions from these blocks were made in 1781, of which this example is a rare survivor.

Marca aldina al front. ed in fine, cc. num. 130. Seconda edizione (la 1° nel 1505, sempre di Aldo) del famoso romanzo del Bembo, ambientato ad Asolo ove alla corte della regina di Cipro, Caterina Cornaro, si festeggia lo sposalizio di una dama; in tre giornate alcuni gentiluomini veneziani dibattono intorno al tema dell’amore con altrettante gentildonne. | - Venise, Alde, 1515 In-8 de (16) ff., 348 pp., maroquin lavallière, grand décor de maroquin noir mosaïqué composé d'entrelacs s'articulant autour d'un grand médaillon central ovale dessiné par un jeu d'entrelacs, enroulements et fleurons de maroquin mosaïqué bleu et rouge, dos à nerfs orné de même, coupes et bordures décorées, tranches dorées (Capé). Première édition aldine des œuvres de Lactance. Elle a été donnée par Giambattista Egnatio, auteur de deux longues préfaces dont la première est l'éloge funèbre d'Alde qui venait de mourir trois mois auparavant. Egnatio fut un familier d'Alde Manuce et de sa famille ainsi que l'ami de Jean Grolier dont la bibliothèque comprenait de nombreuses édition aldines. Cet e | |
