AGRICOLA, Daniel (Daniel
Gospel Harmony, concentrated on the Passion of Christ, illustrated by Urs Graf Passio domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum seriem quattorum evangelistarum: per fratrem Danielem Agricolam ordinis minorum de observantia: accuratissima opera devotissimaque expositione illustrata: magnorumque virorum sententijs compte adornata.
Basel, Adam Petri de Langendorff, 31 July 1514.. 4to. Modern light-brown gilt-marbled calf, spine ribbed, with 2 black title-labels. With almost full-page woodcut(121 x 93 mm) on title, showing Mary with the Child, Christ preaching in the midst of three saints and a procession with a town on the background; the scene is framed by the emblematic representation of the four evangelists, each holding an open book, and four biblical figures each holding an horn-book with their name: Daniel vir desideriorum, Petrus princeps apostolorum, Jacob frater Donini, and Paulus doctor gentium, signed by Urs Graf with his monogram and dated 1514; the text is illustrated with 20 small woodcuts in text (ca. 45 x 35 mm), illustrating Christ's Passion, also by Urs Graf. 40 lvs.. Rare and well produced Gospel Harmony, concentrated on the Passion of Christ, and beautifully illustrated by Urs Graf. The book is beautifully printed in a fine 'lettre batarde' in various sizes, with the extensive notes arranged all around Agricola's text, and with legenda in the margins. The simple but expressive woodcuts by Urs Graf charmingly illustrate the sequence of events which led to the crucifixion of Jesus as told by the four evangelists. Our edition is possibly the fourth. The first edition was published in 1509, also by Adam Petri (further edd. 1511, 1513, 1516, 1518, 1519 and 1520). Sometimes five leaves of the Directorium in indice passionis articulos , with a separate title and imprint are added. The Franciscan theologist, preacher and poet Daniel Agricola (or Daniel Meyer; 1490 - 1540) lived in Basel and Kreuznach. He is known mainly for the present work and for the Vita Sancti Beati published in Basel in 1511. Not much of his life his known. Urs Graf (Solothurn, Switzerland, about 1485 - Basel, about 1528) was the most important artist of the early renaissance from German speaking Switzerland. He was active in Basel and Zurich from about 1507 until his mysterious disappearance from Basel in 1527. Graf was a member of the Goldsmiths Guild, a die-cutter, woodblock book illustrator, stain glass designer and painter, engraver, and a mercenary who periodically escaped his artisan life for military adventures in Italy. He produced the world's first etching print in 1513 and pioneered the white-line woodblock technique. Graf almost always signed his drawings and was certainly influenced by his famous contemporary, Albrecht Dürer, but overall he pursued his own style; see Passavant, Le peintre-graveur III, p. 428 (n. 85-104); about Urs Graf's work see also: Lüthi, Urs Graf und die Kunst der alten Schweizer ( Zürich 1928). Fine copy with contemporary ownership's entry of Johannes Casper Mentishausen on the title; brown morocco bookplate of Silvain S. Brunschwig on the inside of the front cover.- (Marginal damage to 4 lvs. slightly affectingthe text of two; a bit cut short, sl. touching text at one occasion). Bulla Leonis X Pont. Maxi. Convocationis & Salvico(n)ductus o(mn)ium ad conciliu(m) Lateran. venire debêtium & indulgentia. concessa. labora(n)tibus pro universali pace lecta in Nona session. sac. Later. concilij in Late. basili.

TORRENTINUS, H.
By a brother of the Common Life Elucidarius vel Vocabularius poeticus ab Hermanno Torrentino compositus: continens fabulas, historias, provincias, urbes, insulas, fluvios, et montes illustres.
Hagenau, Henricus Gran for Joannis Rynman, 1514. - 4to. With woodcut borders including the printer's device on title, and woodcut initial in text. (60) lvs. Two popular historical, geographical and mythological dictionaries by Hermannus Torrentinus (1450-1520), or Van der Beke, containing proper nouns important in literature, history and mythology. Torrentinus was a pupil of Alexander Hegius at Deventer, and became a member of the Brethren of the Common Life. At about 1490 he was a teacher at Groningen. After his father died and his mother was left without support, Torrentinus left the Order and returned to his native town Zwolle, where he, though blind, taught untill his death. The first dictionary, of Latin words, was first published in 1498 at Deventer by Pafraet, under the title "Elucidarius carminum et historiarum". It was also issued under the title: "Parvum dictionarium poeticum". The second dictionary, of Greek, Hebrew and Arab words translated into Latin, was added to it in 1505. The book is well laid out, the text printed in a small "lettre bâtarde" in two columns, with 47 lines to a page, running titles and headings printed in large type. Until 1540 there were at least 40 editions under slightly different titles, making the Elucidarius one of the most popular reference works of the first half of the 16th century and certainly the most important 'classical dictionary' of its time. Torrentinus wrote several small books for use in his school, featuring texts by Virgil and Sabellico. The Elucidarius is in fact a concise encyclopaedia with data in the field of geography, classical literature, daily life, etc., gathered mainly from classical literature and put together in alphabetical order. Good copy, with ample margins.- (Wrappers gone; two quires loose in spine; margin title page sl. dam.; sl. waterst. at the end). VD16 T 1601. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Croce, Giovanni Andrea della:
Oficina aurea.
Extrem rare First German Edition of Groce's finely illustrated surgical classic, including original illustrations for cranial surgery, the model for numerous later illustrations in the field. One of the most important iconographic sources on early surgical instruments, and one of the great illustrated medical books of the time, showing in hundred woodcuts of instruments nearly all of the best known and most frequently used surgical instruments from antiquity to the time of publication. The work including the first illustration of neurological surgery operation actually taking place. Croce's recommendations for wound management are surprisingly modern. Croce, born in Venice, succeeded da Vio and Guido Guidi, and continued the impetus they had given to the rise of surgery in Italy during the Renaissance. He was one of the most successful surgeons in Venice during years of warfare with the Turks. Walker, p.17, 18, 227..

Title with large woodcut vignette. Small quarto. Old flexible vellum. Overall a very good copy. First German edition. A remarkable account of the battle of Chaldiran between the Turkish Sultan Selim I. (1465- 1520) and the Persian Shah Ismail I. (1487-1524), which was won by the Turks. Selim usurped the throne from his father, Bayezid II, in 1512 and eliminated all potential pretenders to the throne. In a number of military campaigns he defeated the Mamluk Sultanate and annexed Syria, Palestine, and Egypt. He extended Ottoman power to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, claiming the position of "Guardian of the Faithful," a title that had hitherto been held by Shah Ismail. During his rule, Selim more than doubled the size of the Ottoman empire. According to Göllner, the present German translation appears to be based on an Italian original. News of the Persian defeat reached Germany in a remarkably short time. Two other editions (one in Latin, one in German) were issued in Augsburg in the same year. Only two copies are located on OCLC.

"Robert Holkot belonged to the first generation of scholars to absorb and develop the views of William Ockham. He is particularly known for his "covenantal theology" and his views on human freedom within the framework of a divine command ethics. He developed an original theology grounded in Ockham's logic and metaphysics, and his works were influential into the sixteenth century". (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). FairMur (G) 338 (1514 ed.); not in Adams.Second edition (by the publisher of the 1514 first edition) of an extensively and beautifully illustrated devotional work, with readings for every day of the year (more extensive for Sundays). The woodblocks are largely the same as in the first edition, but the title-frame was newly made for the present edition. The text is loosely translated from the Gospels and Epistles, with explanatory texts (the book was intended for laymen who could not read Latin), Psalms, and stories from the lives of the Evangelists, Saints, etc. Folios 228 and 228v note the "güt und köstlich" art of printing with further comments on its benefits, ending with a complaint that people prefer to spend 3 shillings at the weinhauß than 1 shilling for a book. The woodcuts are by Hans Franck, usually equated with Hans Lützenburger (d. 1526?) at Basel, closely associated with Hans Holbein the younger and best known for the woodcuts he made for Holbein's 1524 Dance of Death. He here worked after drawings by Hans Schäufelein (the two largest of the four series) and Urs Graf (the title frame and the smallest series), and many show their HS and VG monograms, some also with Franck's shovel mark. The artist for the remaining series is unknown. The book is rare and three of the seven copies we have located are incomplete. One binding roll shows half-length portraits of Jesus, King David and two Saints, each with a two-line text. Another shows heads of Luther, Hus, Erasmus and possibly Melanchthon. The end leaf at the back is watermarked with a letter P below a square shield with a cross above three hills (similar to Piccard IV, marks XVII 691-704 (dated 1560-70, mostly from Esslingen, near Stuttgart), especially 699.The bookplate comprises a half sheet pasted down to the inside front board. It reads, "Sum ex Libris Ioannis Hartmanni Ivnioris Forchemii." followed by a quote from Psalm 55:11 (I trust in God and fear not what man can do to me), then his warning to ensure the book stays in his possession: "Est Liber ille meus, caueas deponere loco, Si mihi sustuleris, fur tibi nomen erit." Johann Hartmann is not the chemist of that name, but may be related to the astronomical instrument maker Georg Hartmann (1489-1564), who was born near Forccheim. In very good condition and with good margins, with a spot in the text in a few leaves (slightly affecting one woodcut) and an occasional minor marginal water stain or tear. A rare devotional work with about 125 beautiful woodcut illustrations and an remarkable 1581 bookplate.

ERASMUS.
Item. Epistola Erasmi Roterodami, ad Iacobum Wimphelingium Selestanum.
Antwerp, Jean Thibault, 1514. - 4to. Modern cloth. With title within richly ornamental woodcut borders. (6), 66, (3) lvs. Newly revised and enlarged edition of a famous treatise by Erasmus on a richer Latin, intended to provide his students with a wide range of Latin words and expressions. In the years from 1495 to 1499, Erasmus lived in Paris, studying, but also teaching Latin in order to support his studies. For the benefit of his pupils he prepared several Latin pieces designed to aid them in acquiring a basic competence in classical Latin grammar and provide them at least with some ability in employing the language. Erasmus had long planned to write a book like the present, and a start was made with the "Colloquia Familiaria", which also contained a "Brevis de Copia praeceptio". But only in 1512 the book was ready and first published by Badius Ascentius at Paris. Erasmus had the later later, from 1514 on, published by Schürer at Strasbourg. The third corrected and slightly changed authorized edition was published in 1517 at Basel by Frobenius, and in 1534 followed the last authorized edition, also by Froben. This formed the basis for the scholarly text edition in the Amsterdam "Opera Omnia" of 1988. By 1540 no less than 134 editions had been published, making the school book to one of the bestsellers of the first half of the sixteenth century. The present edition is based on the Schürrer-edition of 1514, and starts with the letter by Erasmus to Schürer at Strassburg, dated at Basel, October 1514. After the index follows another letter by Erasmus to Johannes Coletus, Dean of St. Paul's in London, dated at London, May 1512. At the end a letter to Jacob Whimpeling is added, dated October 11, 1514, followed by a ten-line poem by Erasmus in praise of Sebastiaan Brand. The book is nicely printed in a small "lettre bâtarde", with large black initials for the numerous chapters into which the two "Books" are divided. The colophon is found at the bottom of leaf LXVI, before the added letter to Jacob Whimpeling. The present edition seems to be extremely rare, Nijhoff-Kronenberg listing 2 copies only, one in the Cambridge University Library, and one in the Bibliothèque Nationale at Paris. Good copy with ample margins.- (Last leaf lacking; few old ms. notes on verso title and in the margins; few sm. wormholes; some sl. staining and thumbing; corner of one leaf rep.; lvs. n1 and n2 misbound). Jordanus Nemorarius]
Arithmetica decem libris demonstrata. Musica libri demostrata quator. Epitome in Libros Arithmeticos diui Seuerini Boetij. Rithmimachie ludus qui et pugna numuroru appellatur.
      - Paris, H. Estienne, (7 Sept. 1514). 4to (27.3 x 19.2 cm), printed in Gothic type. Title set within woodcut border, full-page woodcut on one page and small woodcut illustrations and diagrams throughout. Many decorative initials. Expertly executed new calf binding in period style. *Historians of mediaeval mathematics agree that Jordanus de Nemore (1225-1260) was one of the most important writers on mathematics in Europe. He was, for example, among the first to use letters to replace numbers in algebraic calculations. But almost nothing is known about his life. This edition of Jordanus' Arithmetica - the first Estienne edition - is a fine example of early sixteenth century printing, complete with numerous mathematical diagrams. It comprises Jordanus' work on the theory of numbers, as well as a treatise on music by le Fèvre, an epitome (also by le Fèvre) of Boethius' Arithmetica, and an anonymous tract (attributed to John Shirwood) about the arithmetical game of "Rithmimachia". This Estienne edition was printed from settings similar to those used in the first printed edition of 1496. A rare book - ABPC records only 2 copies in the last 30 years. A small hand stamp on verso of title page, Some very small and marginal wormholes at the beginning and end, but not obtrusive in any way. Two small paper repairs to corners of first two leaves. Some near-contemporary marginalia and the text "Jordani Arithmetica" added in ink to title, Estienne's name inked out on title-page and colophon. Provenance: Harvard College Library. Overall a very nice crisp and clean copy of a rare work. Adams, J324; Renouard Estienne, p. 16. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Jordanus Nemorarius]
Arithmetica decem libris demonstrata. Musica libri demostrata quator. Epitome in Libros Arithmeticos diui Seuerini Boetij. Rithmimachie ludus qui et pugna numuroru appellatur.
. Paris, H. It comprises Jordanus' work on the theory of numbers, as well as a treatise on music by le Fevre, an epitome (also by le Fevre) of Boethius' Arithmetica, and an anonymous tract (attributed to John Shirwood) about the arithmetical game of "Rithmimachia". Adams J324, Renouard Estienne p. 16..

QUINTILIANUS, Marcus Fabius.
The important first Aldus edition of the Roman world's greatest work on rhetoric [Institutiones oratoriae].
Venice, Aldus Manutius & Andre d'Asola ('Aedibus Aldi et Andreae Soceri'), August 1514. - 4to. Seventeenth-century (?) red morocco with refined gilt centre-piece within triple gilt ruled border with gilt corner pieces on both sides ('Style le Gascon'), gilt inner dentelles and binding edges, spine with (later) black title-label lettered in gold. Aldus famous printer's device (53 mm.) on the first and last leaves. (4), 230 lvs. (Collation *4 (including the often lacking 4th (blank) leaf), a-z, A-E8, F6). First Aldus edition of the complete text of the De Oratoria, on the teaching of speaking and writing, by Quintilianus (ca. 35 in Spain - 95 AD).Quintilian's father, a well-educated man, sent him to Rome to study rhetoric early in the reign of Nero. In ca. 60 Quintilian returned to Spain, possibly to practice law in the courts of his own province. However, in 68 he returned to Rome as part of the retinue of Emperor Galba, Nero's short-lived successor. After Galba's death, and during the chaotic Year of the Four Emperors which followed, Quintilian opened a public school of rhetoric. Among his students were Pliny the Younger, and perhaps Tacitus. Quintilian retired from teaching and pleading in 88 and he spent his retirement writing his Institutiones Oratoriae. This is the only extant work of Quintilian, dealing not only with the theory and practice of rhetoric, but also with the foundational education and development of the orator himself. For Quintilian, the ideal orator or rhetorician was skilled in speaking and also a moral man (vir bonus dicendi peritus). The Institutiones can therefore be described as a treatise on education, a manual of rhetoric, a reader's guide to the best authors, and a handbook of the moral duties of the orator. Although much of what he writes is similar to Cicero, Quintilian emphasizes teaching. He was recognized by his contemporaries and exerted a strong influence possibly in the schools the Romans spread throughout the Empire. The influence continued until the fifth century. It was revived briefly in the twelfth century in France. The Humanists at the end of the fourteenth century renewed interest in Quintilian, especially after Poggio found a complete manuscript of the text in 1416 in the monastery in St. Gall. The editio princeps of Quintilian was edited by Ant. Campanus and printed in Rome in 1470 by Philippus de Lignamine. In the same year the second edition was printed by Schweynheym & Pannartz, edited by Giovanni Andrea Bussi; both edition were based on corrupt copies of the manuscript found by Poggio. A year later Jenson printed the third edition, skilfully edited by Omnibonus Leonicensis. The present edition, beautifully printed in italics, is the first edition of Quintilian by Aldus Manutius, finished less than half a year before Aldus died in February 1515. The text is edited by Andrea Navagero (1483-1527), one of the young poets from the Paduan circle, who was working for several years on the texts of Cicero, Lucretius (1515), Virgil (1514, Terence (1517), and the notoriously difficult text of Quintilian in close collusion with Aldus himself. Working in the famous Venice printing House of Aldus, he emerged as one of the ablest Latin editors of his time and, as librarian of the Marciana in Venice, he played a great part in the re-organization of the long-neglected manuscripts. On the verso of the title-page, mentioning only the name of the author above Aldus's printer's device, is the dedication by Aldus to the Italian editor and compiler Giambattista Ramusio (1485-1557), the author of the monumental Delle navigationi e viaggi, a collection of geographical accounts of explorations. The contents of the twelve books follows on two leaves, the fourth leaf of this first quire being blank. Good copy in nice binding, some 16th-century annotations in ink.- (Sl. stained throughout, new endpapers, rebacked). Renouard, p. 68, nr. 5; UCLA 124; Adams Q-52; STC Italian 546; M. Lowry, The world of Aldus Manutius (1979), p.204, 233. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

This Venetian imprint is not in Adams (Catalogue of Books Printed on the Continent of Europe 1501-1600 in Cambridge Libraries) and is rare. As we have not been able to locate a copy we cannot be sure that there was not an engraved title page, but our title is on A1. Gulielmus Parisiensis, also known as Guillaume d'Auvergne or Gulielmus Avernus, to whom this work is usually attributed was a French Dominican, professor of theology. He was born towards the end of the 12th century and died when Archbishop of Paris in 1248 or 1249. He was considered one of the most enlightened theologians and philosophers of his age, a man of great learning. The earliest printed Postille Maiores date from the 1470s and were much reprinted well into the 16th century in France, Switzerland and Venice. Adiectis tabula capitulorum / atq[ue] indice alphabetario omnium hoc in opuscolo contentorum absolutissime concinnatis.
[colophon:] plo Jo. Knoblouchii: impe[n]sis [viro?] Pauli Goetz civis & Bibliopole Arge[n]tini. Nonis septe[m]brib. M.d.xiiii. [Strasbourg, J. Knoblouch for Paul Götz, 9 September ] 1514 - Small 4to in eights, ff. 170, [15]; a good clean copy, rebound in 19th century English calf, rather worn and since repaired. A duplicate from the library of the University of Leipzig, with stamp at foot of title. A fine book from the press of Johannes Knobloch, the prolific Strasbourg printer active in the first thirty years of the 16th century. This is the much-reprinted Pupilla Oculi of John Burgh (also Borough, or Joannes de Burgo), a guide to basic clerical practice, intended to assist parish priests with their pastoral care. Burgh (fl. 1370-98), who was presumably an Englishman, was prominent at Cambridge in the 1380s, where he was Chancellor in 1384-6: this book, perhaps intended as a practical rebuttal to Wycliffite ideas, is easily his most famous work - it was frequently copied and many early manuscripts exist. This version of the text, by the Dutch humanist Agustin Agge, was first published by William Bretton in London in 1510 (STC 4115 - although actually printed in Paris by Hopyl). The present edition retains Agge’s dedication to Bretton, on f. 1v. Provenance. (1) At the foot of ff. 1v-2r is an early inscription: ‘Liber Veteriscelle, reposit[us] ad Biblioteca[m] publica[m] anno salut[e?] mille.mo Dxxxij’. This shows that the book came from the Cistercian house at Altzelle in Saxony (in the diocese of Meissen), dissolved in 1540. Many of the Altzelle books went to the library of Leipzig University, but presumably not until the dissolution - the university itself was founded in 1409, and so the library was probably well-established by this time. However, in this case the ‘public library’ seems to be the general library of the monastery. Another book with a similar inscription is found at Frankfurt-am-Main UB, but this time reading: ‘Liber Monasterij Veteriscelle. Repositus ad Bibliothecam publicam per reverendissimum in Christo patrem dominum Martinum Ibidem Abbatem Anno 1514.’ This can only mean that Abbot Martin deposited the book in the house’s own ‘public’ collection. See Ohly & Sack, Frankfurt incunable catalogue, 1037 - the book in question is a copy of Dominicus de Flandria, Quaestiones in commentaria Thomae de Aquino super Metaphysicis Aristotelis (Venice, 1499). (2) Small stamp at foot of title showing that this was disposed of by the University of Leipzig library as a duplicate, probably in the early 19th century. (3) English ownership inscription of Charles Walker, May 1867. (4) Ownership stamp of the monastery of St Francis, Crawley, Sussex. BMC German p. 170; VD 16 J373; Shaaber 826.
