| Opus auree & in explicabilis bonitatis & continentie. Conformitatu(m) scilicet vite Beati Fra(ncisci) ad vita(m) d(omini) n(ost)ri Iesu Christi
Zanotus Castilioneus, Milan 1513 - Contemporary blindtooled Italian calf over wooden boards (rebacked) Folio . Second, much revised edition of the author's "Liber conformitatum" (1510), edited here by Giovanni Mapello, with a new dedicatory letter and poem on verso of title and new woodcuts. The work includes a full-page woodcut: "in which St. Francis appears at the foot of a tree to which Christ is nailed. From the branches of the tree hand placards containing the forty correspondences between the life of St. Francis and the life of Christ, set into the block in type in small gothic letter. This representation of the material of the text in the form of a tree was part of the original manuscript submitted by Bartholomaeus for approbation in 1399; . This illustration came under attack in a volume of extracts selected and translated by Erasmus Alberus as Der Barfuser Münche Eulenspiegel und Alcoran, Wittenberg, Hans Lufft, 1542, with a preface by Martin Luther. The text was used to expose the idolotry of St. Francis and the illustration was misinterpreted according to this thesis, the upper figure seen as St. Francis in place of Christ, the lower figure as a Franciscan monk worshipping St. Francis. . The 1513 Milan edition of the Liber conformitatum, edited by Giovanni Mapello and printed by Zanoto da Castiglione, had a less dramatic cut, with two figures-St. Francis and a monk-standingat the foot of the tree (reprod. Santoro, Libri illustrati milanesi, p. 144). The 1513 version was copied in Alessandro Benacci's Bologna edition of 1590" (Mortimer, Italian, no. 44; 1510 ed.) 229 leaves (without last blank). With title woodcut title border consisting of five small woodcuts and ornamental pieces; full-page woodcut printed in red and black; text woodcut repeated three times; woodcut initials; title printed in red and black; woodcut printer's device at end. Title-page neatly remargined. Early owner's signature on title. Very nice copy. § IA 102.778; Adams F 906 (under Francis of Assisi); Sander 205; Brunet III, 1052-53. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Ohne Ort u. Dr. (Straßburg, Johann Knobloch d.Ä. (?), 1513).. 4to. 6 n. num. Bl. mit halbseitengroßem Titelholzschnitt (Wappendarstellung), 92 (von 94) num. Bl. m. ganzseitigen Stammbaum in Holzschnitt.

PLATO
| Opera Omnia
1513 1513 - PLATO. Omnia Platonis Opera. Venice: Aldus, 1513. Two volumes in one. Thick folio, contemporary full limp vellum, spine title in manuscript. Housed in custom clamshell box. $125,000. First edition in Greek-the editio princeps in Greek and "the basis for all subsequent editions" (Graesse). A beautiful copy. The philosophical dialogues of Plato, reintroduced to the West in the fifteenth century by way of Constantinople, exemplify the spirit of free inquiry that characterized the Renaissance in Europe. "That Plato should be the first of all the ancient philosophers to be translated and broadcast by the printing press was inevitable. His master Socrates had laid the foundation of scientific method in asking the essential question 'What is.?' rather than improvising theories, and this passionate belief in the answerableness of questions and the certainty that good came from knowledge was developed and idealized in the writings of Plato" (PMM 27). With the support of Lorenzo de' Medici, humanist scholars such as Pico della Mirandola launched a Platonic revival in Florence. Marsilio Ficino's translation of Plato's dialogues into Latin was published in 1484, followed, in 1491, by a second Latin translation published in Venice. It was not until 1513, however, that Aldus Manutius produced the first edition of Plato in the original Greek, now considered by scholars the editio princeps, the basis for all later editions for the following 300 years. The Greek Plato in two large folio volumes "was the last great undertaking of the first Aldine press" (Davies). "This is an exceedingly beautiful and valuable edition, which for typographical elegance may justly be ranked among the most beautiful of the productions of this illustrious printer" (Moss). It is considered one of the "noble and historic volumes which, for the first time in history, made the greatest of the philosophers of Athens accessible in print to the scholars of the Renaissance era" (Rosenbach 35:403). Ahmanson-Murphy 97/1-2. Moss II, 423. Dibdin II, 132-33. Renouard I, 104-05. Brunet IV, 694. Graesse V, 314. Norman 1714. Armorial bookplate. Text exceptionally clean, with expert paper repairs and minor spotting to bottom corners of first four and last three gatherings. A few small unobtrusive oil stains to contemporary vellum. A splendid copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

CAESAR, Julius
| Commentatiorum de bello Gallico libri VIII
1513 1513 - FIRST EDITION. (ALDINE PRINTING) CAESAR, Julius. Commentatiorum de bello Gallico libri VIII. De bello civili pompeiano libri IIII. De bello Alexandrino liber I. De bello Africano liber I. De bello Hispaniensi liber I. [Venice: in aedibus Aldi, et Andreae soceri, April 1513]. Small octavo, contemporary full vellum, tan calf spine label, all edges gilded and gauffered. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $12,000. First Aldine edition of Caesar's Commentaries, with manuscript captions to the illustrations of Massilia and Uxellodunum in a hand very similar to Aldus' own. With a double-page hand-colored woodcut map, five splendid full-page woodcut illustrations, and the anchor and dolphin Aldine device on title-page and on verso of last leaf. "On 28 June 1512, Fra Giocondo of Verona successfully petitioned the Venetian Senate for ten years' protection of editions of various classical authors which he had prepared. These included Commentarii de Cesaro, the basis of Aldus' only edition, which appeared at the end of 1513. The most striking feature of [the edition] is the map, the Pictura totius Galliae. There are five additional woodcuts in the frontmatter, all dealing with Caesar's strategic and tactical operations. The most significant are the two pictorial representations of the sieges of Massilia and Uxellodunum. In many copies of the 1513 Caesar, these woodcuts carry the manuscript captions. Renouard says that this is Aldus' holograph. the script does indeed look like known specimens of Aldus' handwriting. Further, we have numerous reports of Aldus' constant correcting of proofs and finished text; his diligence amazed Erasmus in 1508" (Fletcher, 118). The work was so popular that the Aldine press was to publish a further fourteen editions. Text in Latin. Adams C26. Renouard, 60. Annotations in an early hand. Minor dampstain to margin of first two gatherings, light scattered foxing, intentional early scissor-cut "pointer" to the Uxellodunum woodcut, worm trails to front cover of contemporary vellum. An extremely good copy of a very scarce Aldine printing. [Attributes: First Edition]

With 405 illus. on plates, sometimes printed recto and verso (40 in color and some double-page), and 1 heraldic vignette. 4 leaves, 289 pp., 1 leaf index. Folio. Orig. vellum with the coats of arms of the 13 cantons on both covers, spine gilt. Geneva, Sadag, 1932. Numbered copy of the de luxe edition bound in full vellum, of a total edition of 1000 copies. One of the most beautifully produced chronicles in facsimile. It was written by Diebold Schilling the Younger (1460-1522?) from Lucerne around 1513, and it offers a detailed account of daily life in the 15th century, treating such diverse topics as trade, fortification, topography, dress rules, etc. The technique of the illustrations is unique for the time: painted in opaque colors, with bold outlines in black ink, it is meant to convey the impression of paintings rather than colored pen drawings. - Wyss 141-143; Feller/Bonjour 66f.; Zemp, Schweizer. | Die Handschriftliche Überlieferung Von Platons Symposion
Reichert Verlag. Fairfax Murray, Catalogo 1899, p. 114, n. 631. Sander 1, 2466; Olschki, 4474: "Volume fort rare".

PLATO

MONDINO DE LUZZI.

| De omnibus humani corporis interioribus menbris [sic] Anathomia.
[Colophon] Impressit Argentine [Strasbourg]: Martinus Flach, 1513. 4to: 40 unnumbered leaves. Gothic letter, 2 woodcuts in the text, woodcut initials as well as spaces with guide letters; rubricated throughout with initial letters and paragraph marks. Title-leaf a little dust-soiled, old repair to blank lower margin of B2, some inner margins dampstained, light spotting and paper discolouration, but a good fresh and large copy (213 x 151 mm) with some deckle edges showing in the lower and outer margins. Recent half morocco. Duplicate from the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek with very faint stamp on A1r, A1v, K4r, and on A2v (with release stamp). Signature of Walter Pagel and book label of B. E. J. Pagel on front endpaper. First printing of Johannes Adelphus’ recension of Mondino’s Anatomia, the first modern work devoted solely to anatomy and the first monograph on the subject to appear in print. It was completed in 1316, and first published in 1478. The editor of this edition added some notes to the text. “One of these (Sign F4v) is accompanied by a small woodcut printed in the text with reversed letters, , and representing the heart, particularly the Ventriculus medius, which was thought to be between the two halves of the heart, and the orifices of the coronory vessels” (Cholant/Frank). A large woodcut of a man with dissected thoracic and abdominal cavities, and surrounded by the signs of the zodiac with lines drawn to parts of the body, appears on the last printed page. Mondino (Mundinus, c. 1275–1290) is recognised as the founder of anatomy in the Middle Ages. He reintroduced human dissection, which had been neglected for 1500 years before him. His practical dissection is evident from the text of his book, which was easily the most successful book on anatomy for more than half a century, appearing in many editions, either on its own or combined with the works of Ketham or Berengario. Despite the large number of editions, all are rare; of those published on its own, the two most likely to appear on the market are those of Leipzig 1493, which has become a valuable book, and the present 1513 edition, all the others being very hard to find. Choulant/Frank pp. 88–96. See G&M 361; Parkinson, Breakthroughs, 1316; and Stillwell, The awakening interest in science, 679.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Second edition (the last published during the author's life) of Adelphus's German chronicle of the Ottoman Empire from its beginnings to 1500, with special emphasis on the Crusades and with numerous woodcut illustrations. Bound with it is one of the earliest editions of Eusebius's Latin world chronicle to include the 1512 continuation with its reference to "savages" brought from the "new world" in 1509. Bound with these are an early edition of Koebel's illustrated account of the structure, organization and protocol of the Holy Roman Empire and its nobility, and the rare first and only edition of Landsperger's list of the religious and secular nobility of the Holy Roman Empire in 1541, both in German.Adelphus (1485-1523) first published his Turkish chronicle at Strasbourg in 1513. The woodcuts show battles and other scenes from the Middle East, presenting Ottomans, European kings and noblemen, and crusaders bearing the cross on their clothes and banners. Some appear on horseback, others in European or Eastern ships, others in fortified cities. Some woodcuts show a perspective and style reminiscent of mediaeval art, while others are good examples of Renaissance work showing modern perspective and rendering each figure with personal character.Eusebius's chronicle originally extended only to the year 329, but was continued by Saint Jerome (to 381), Saint Tiro Prosper Aquitanus (to 448), Mattia Palmieri (in two stages to 1481) and Joannes Multivallis (to 1512). Parts were first published ca. 1475, all but Multivallis's continuation in 1483 and the complete text as we now know it by Estienne in Paris in 1512. The present edition probably follows Estienne's 1518 edition, which for some reason presented Multivallis's continuation anonymously. Like the 1483 edition, it names Johannes Gutenberg as the inventor of printing under the year 1457 (when Fust & Schöffer, without Gutenberg, published the Mainz Psalter, the first printed book to bear a date) and erroneously dates his invention to 1440, establishing a tradition that still reigned until the celebrations of 1940. When Multivallis wrote his continuation in 1512, Columbus's 1492 landing in America had not yet been elevated to the canon of great dates in history, but the book has long been listed under Americana for its report of "savages" from the "new world" ("Septem homines sylvestres ex ea insula, quæ terra nova dicitur") brought to Rouen in 1509. Multivallis's description led people to believe these were Brazilian or Canadian Indians, but Desrey's prologue to the 1518 edition of Gaguin's La Mer des Croniques, after noting an event of 1510, uses nearly the same words to describe people brought to Rouen from the island of Oran in present-day Algeria ("Et de ceste isle appellee terre neufue furent. sept ho(m)mes saulvaiges": Davies in Fairfax Murray (French) 184).Koebel (ca. 1460-1533) first published the present account of the Holy Roman Empire at his own Oppenheim press in 1512. It is especially interesting for its woodcuts, with a double-page topographic view showing the buildings, fortifications and coats of arms of twelve German cities (each city enlarged far beyond the scale of the view itself, so that they show a great deal of detail). The other double-page view shows the Emperor, the seven Electors and more than twenty other noblemen of the Empire, each with his coat of arms. As works of art, however, t
