VISAGIER (Jean), dit VOULTE.
Inscriptionum Libri duo. Ad Aegidium Boherum Archid. Rhem et Aven. Ad Barpt. Castellanum Nicaeum Xenorium libellus. (Paris), apud Sim. Colinaeum, 1538. RELIE AVEC (à la suite): 2). (du même). Hendecasyllaborum Libri quatuor. Ad poetas Gallicos Libri duo. Ad Franciscum Boherum Episc. Macloviensem item Libri duo. Parisiis, apud Simônem Colinaeum, 1538.
      - 2 ouvrages en 1 volume in-16. 1). 48ff. numérotés. 4ff. 2). 106ff. numérotés. 6ff. 1). Renouard, S. de Colines, 299. Adams, V, 1033. Christie, Etienne Dolet, pp. 395-410. 2). Renouard, op. cit. 299. Adams, V. 1032. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

MACER FLORIDUS, Aemilius
Herbarum varias qui vis cognoscere vires: huc Macer adest: quo duce doctor eris. [Editado por Pierre Guéroult].
      - S.l.n.a. (París), Petro Baquelier, (c.1510-1515). En 8º. 159 hojas (de 160, falto de la última blanca sólo). Signaturas a-v8. Referencias: Haller, Bibliotheca Botanica I, p. 125

MAJOR, John [Joannes Mair Haddingtonus
Disputationes in Primum et Secundum Sententiarum.
Paris: Parisiis, impressum per Henricum Stephanum, impensis Iodoci Badii ascensii, Joannis Parvi et magistri Constantini Leporis, 1510. [y] Paris: Impresse impensis communibus Joannis Parvi et Jodoci Badii Ascensii, 1528.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

MASSACRE OF THE INNOCENTS
Large illuminated woodcut of the Massacre of the Innocents, with the Flight into Egypt, from a printed Book of Hours. Paris, Gilles Hardouin, c.
      - A very colourful illuminated miniature which depicts Herod seated on his throne, while mothers hold their children in the midst of armed soldiers; through an open window Mary and Joseph flee with Christ into Egypt. Size of miniature: 195 x 120mm. On verso printed gothic text within a woodcut border, small illuminated initials. 1510. A very large and very colourful miniature from an early 16th century printed Horae which has been overpainted in very rich colours. At the foot outlines of two other babies can be seen on the tiled floor. Printed Books of Hours were very popular in the early 16th century, but the example from which our leaf comes must have very sumptuous especially with such rich colouring. It was probably illuminated in the workshop of Germain Hardouin, the brother of the printer and a skilled illuminator himself.

PECKHAM, John.
Perspectiva Communis.
      - [Edited by Luca Gaurico]. Fine large woodcut on title depicting a scholar sitting in his library with three pupils to his left & numerous geometrical woodcuts in the outer margins of the text (two cropped at foot). 18 leaves. Small folio, attractive modern blue morocco by Zaehnsdorf. [Paris?: ca. 1510]. A fine and handsome early edition of this classic work on optics; it was the most influential text on the subject for three hundred years. "The work on which Pecham’s fame has chiefly rested is the Perspectiva communis, probably written between 1277 and 1279 during Pecham’s professorship at the papal curia. In the first book Pecham discussed the propagation of light and color, the anatomy and physiology of the eye, the act of visual perception, physical requirements for vision, the psychology of vision, and the errors of direct vision. In book II he discussed vision by reflected rays and presented a careful and sophisticated analysis of image formation by reflection. Book III was devoted to the phenomena of refraction, the rainbow, and the Milky Way. "The central feature of Pecham’s optical system and the dominant theme of book I of the Perspectiva communis is the theory of direct vision. Here, as elsewhere, Pecham endeavored to reconcile all the available authorities — Aristotle, Euclid, Augustine, al-Kindi, Ibn al-Haytham, Ibn Rushd, Grosseteste, and Bacon. "Pecham’s optical system included significantly more than a theory of direct vision. He briefly discussed the doctrine of species; treated at length the propagation of rays; and developed a theory to explain how solar radiation, when passing through noncircular apertures, gives rise to circular images. He expressed the full law of reflection and applied it to image formation by plane, spherical, cylindrical, and conical mirrors; in this analysis he revealed an implicit understanding of the nature of the focal point of a concave mirror. "Pecham’s success was greatest in the case of the Perspectiva communis. This text.went through twelve printed editions, including a translation into Italian, between 1482 and 1665. It was used and cited by many medieval and Renaissance natural philosophers, including Dominicus de Clavasio, Henry of Langenstein, Blasius of Parma, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Brudzewski, Francesco Maurolico, Giambattista della Porta, Girolamo Fabrici, Johannes Kepler, Willebrord Snellius, and G.B. Riccioli. The Perspectiva communis was the most widely used of all optical texts from the early fourteenth until the close of the sixteenth century, and it remains today the best index of what was known to the scientific community in general on the subject."–D.S.B., X, pp. 475-76. Peckham (ca. 1230-1292), took his degrees at Paris and Oxford and in 1279 was elected archbishop of Canterbury. The first edition of the text was published ca. 1482-83. Fine copy preserved in a morocco-backed box. ? Smith, History of Mathematics, II, p. 341–"The work that had the greatest influence upon the subject of perspective in the Middle Ages was the Perspectiva communis." COLONNA (Pompeio), bp. of Rieti, d.
Document on vellum of a sale of a piece of land during the papacy of Julius II, dated 31 January
      - Notarial sign manual at foot of document with "Stefanus" spelled out in a succession of individual letters, Size of document: 2 1510. A document which records the sale of a piece of land in the territory of Castrum in Contrada by Joannes Tabeus, son of Luca de Iulianello The piece of land is called "la pecza della Casa" and is sold to Zerle de Cerbaria for 50 ducats given in the presence of the notary and witnesses. The document also contains the attestation of the notary in a cursive hand, and a subscription dated 16 February 1512 by which Pompeius Colonna, bishop of Riete and abbot of Subiaco confirms the sale and purchase of the land. The Colonna family was the most powerful of the Roman families in the Renaissance and it was not until the reign of Pope Paul IV (1555-9) that the family was reduced to a position of political and economic dependency which ensured their loyalty as subjects. Pompeio Colonna reluctantly entered the Church to represent his family in that sphere, but nevertheless was politically active in the disturbed times at the beginning of the 16th century He took the side of Emperor Charles V in his quarrel with the Pope, and the desecration of St.Peters and the Vatican in 1526 caused him to be forever remembered with infamy.

MACER FLORIDUS, Aemilius
Herbarum varias qui vis cognoscere vires: huc Macer adest: quo duce doctor eris. [Editado por Pierre Guéroult].
      - S.l.n.a. (París), Petro Baquelier, (c.1510-1515). En 8º. 159 hojas (de 160, falto de la última blanca sólo). Signaturas a-v8. Referencias: Haller, Bibliotheca Botanica I, p. 125

Elementorum libri XIII, cum expositione Theonis insignis mathematici... Bar(tolomeo) Zamber(to) Vene(to) interprete. - (Colophon:)
Venezia, Tacuino, 1510 Small folio. Contemp. wooden boards with remains of leather and metal clasps, early 20th century blind-stamped calf spine; corners worn. With a vignette on title, a most attractive and large three-side border on A1, several large and small decorative initials, numerous geometrical figures and diagrams, and a woodcut printer's device at end. (10), (230) ff.; generally a fresh copy, with some foxing and light soiling on a few leaves, and small wormholes at beginning and end occasionally just touching the text. «A very important edition appeared in 1505 printed at Venice by Joannes Tacuinus. It was translated into Latin from a Greek text by Bartolommeo Zamberti... The volume itself is a first-rate example of the Venetian book of the time. There is an elaborate title-page with the printer's well-known cut of John the Baptist at the foot. The first page of the text has a fine border, and the larger initials are a charming set depicting children playing. The enunciations are printed in gothic, the demonstrations in roman type. In 1510 some of the same sheets were reissued with a freshly printed last page containig the colophon, a misreading of which has often led to the issue being described as of 1517. Both issues seem to be amongst the rarest of early Euclids...» (Thomas Stanford, Euclid, n.5 and p.5). Essling 283. Adams E-973. Riccardi II, 645. Honeyman 974

VALERIUS MAXIMUS.
Valerii Maximi opus cum interprete Oliverio: & paucis annotationibus: /.../.
Milan, Nicolaus Gorgonzola, 1510. Folio. (18),+ 224 blad.

CASSIODORO Flavio Magno
CASSIODORI SENATORIS VIRI DEI DE REGIMINE ECCLESIE PRIMITIVE HYSTORIA TRIPERTITA FELICITER INCIPIT. Venalis habetur apud diuum Claudium vici sancti Iacobi. Parisiis, in aedibus Francisci Regnault universitatis parrhisiorum librarii, 1510 circa.
Testo latino. Cm.16,3x11,8. Pg.200 non numerate. Legatura coeva in piena pelle con dorso a quattro scomparti. Piatto anteriore parzialmente staccato. Impressioni a secco ai piatti. Doppia bordura a triplice filetto, cornice fitomorfa, decorazione a losanga e impressione ornamentale agli specchi. Fogli di guardia marmorizzati. Tagli in rosso. Mancano i nicchi di chiusura. Frontespizio inciso in rosso e nero. Capilettera ornamentali xilografici. > Adams, 871. Choix 15932. ICCU, RMLE\015822.

ANONIMO [ sub. nom. "C. Plini Secundi"
De viris illustribus cum tabula noviter impressus
s.l. [Roma] s.e. [Mazzocchi] s.d. Hain 1966: vol. I nn. 2129 - 2130 - 2135 - 2139 - 2140). The Cambridge History of Classical Literature. [CARTHUSIANS.] [GUIGO DE CASTRO,
Statuta ordinis Cartusiensis.
Basel, Johann Amerbach, 1510. 1510 5 parts in one vol., folio, gothic letter, with 20 fine woodcuts, some full-page by Urs Graf, and another woodcut by the Master DS; rubricated throughout, initials supplied in red and blue, ruled in red; bound in French 18th-century red morocco, gilt border on the sides, flat spine gilt with fleurons, green morocco title-label, edges gilt. First printed edition of the Statutes of the Carthusian Order, a magnificent copy. Printed at the expense of the editor, Gregor Reisch (c. 1467-1525), author of the “Margarita philosophica”, for distribution to the members of the Order only. The original compiler, Guigo de Castro (Gigues du Chastell), became a monk of the Grande Chartreuse in 1107, and three years later was elected prior. “To Guigo the Carthusian Order in great measure owes its fame, if not its very existence. When he became prior, only two charterhouses existed, the Grande Chartreuse and the Calabrian house where St. Bruno had died; nine more were founded during his twenty-seven years’ priorship. These new foundations made it necessary to reduce to writing the traditional customs of the mother-house. Guigo’s Statutes, composed in 1127 or 1128, have always remained the basis of all Carthusian legislation” (Webster). There are four large cuts representing the history of the Carthusian Order and 17 portraits of popes, all by Urs Graf (see His, Urs Graf, nos. 203-223). Koegler (Kunstchronik, N.S. XVIII, p. 290) attributes the representation of “Guillhelmus Rainaldi” to the Master DS.

First Editions. Printed on Vellum. Both volumes are PRINTED ON VELLUM. The first work is a life of St John Gualbert who founded the Vallombrosan Order, based on the Benedictine rule but with a greater emphasis on contemplation, in about 1036. The order underwent various reforms over the centuries, and for a time counted amongst its novices Galileo. It was eventally suppressed in 1866. The second work, a compendium of the abbots general of the same order, was issued with the first work and thus has been incorrectly ascribed to Adimari. The order's woodcut device on the title-page was originally used in a Vallombrosan missal of 1503. Camerini assets that the Adimari volume is 1511 rather than the 1510 date in the colophon. “St. John Gualbert, son of the noble Florentine Gualbert Visdomini, was born in 985 (or 995), and died at Passignano, 12 July, 1073, on which day his feast is kept; he was canonized in 1193... John Gualbert became a Benedictine at San Miniato, but left that monastery to lead a more perfect life. His attraction was for the cenobitic not eremitic life, so after staying for some time with the monks at Camaldoli, he settled at Vallombrosa, where he founded his monastery...The holy lives of the first monks at Vallombrosa attracted considerable attention and brought many requests for new foundations, but there were few postulants, since few could endure the extraordinary austerity of the life...After the founder's death the order spread rapidly... St. John adopted the Rule of St. Benedict but added greatly to its austerity and penitential character. His idea was to unite the ascetic advantages of the eremitic life to a life in community, while avoiding the dangers of the former. Severe scourging was inflicted for any breach of rule, silence was perpetual, poverty most severely enforced. The rule of enclosure was so strict that the monks might not go out even on an errand of mercy. The main point of divergence lay in the prohibition of the manual work, which is prescribed by St. Benedict. St. John's choir monks were to be pure contemplatives and to this end he introduced the system of lay-brothers who were to attend to the secular business. He was among the first to systematize this institution, and it is probable that it was largely popularized by the Vallumbrosans. The term conversi (lay brothers) occurs for the first time in Abbot Andrew of Strumi's Life of St. John, written at the beginning of the twelfth century. The Vallumbrosans do not, strictly speaking, form a separate order, but a Benedictine congregation, though they are not united to the confederated congregations of the Black Monks.” [Catholic Ency.] EDIT 267.
