|
| Illuminated miniature of the betrayal by Judas Iscariot on a full leaf from a Book of Hours. France (Paris), c.
|
- Illuminated rectangular miniature (107 x 60mm.) which shows Judas betraying Christ with a kiss in front of a large group of soldiers; in the foreground lies the servant Malchus whose ear has just been sliced off by Peter who stands beside Christ. Illuminated border of acanthus and coloured flowers and leaves. Size of leaf: 180 x 123mm. Ruled for 18 lines of gothic text. 1480. A miniature painted by a follower of the Maître François, a highly succesful artist who included among his cliente bibliophiles from the French court and dignitaries in Paris; he influenced many other artists who copied his style and palette. His miniatures are very accomplished productions in which the elongated usually standing figures make a somewhat static appearance; his colours range from beige, brown and mauve in the foreground to azurite blue, lemon and harsh red in the background. At the foot of another leaf from this manuscript, the arms of the family of Aurelle de Villeneuve appear with those of Allaneau, of Anjou. The illuminated border considerably faded due to waterstaining, but the miniature only lightly affected, apart from wear to the blue cloak of Judas.

Jacobus de Voragine:
|
| Legenda aurea, deutsch. (GWM 11362, H 9973). Von sant Benedict.
|
Augsburg, Johann Bämler, 26. Juni u. 4. Oktober 1480. Type 3.. (vgl. F. Geldner: Die deutschen Inkunabel-Drucker, Band 1, S. 138)

SAMUEL MAROCHITANUS.
|
| Epistola contra Judaeorum errores. Based on the translation from the Arabic by Alphonsus Boni Hominis. - PONTIUS PILATUS (pseudo-). Epistola ad Tiberium.
|
- Kl.-4to (205 x 147 mm). [22] Bl. [a8, b6, c8]. Pappband. "In the original work Samuel claimed to prove the prophetic character of Jesus and Mohammed, and argued that too many laws were added to the Torah by the Mishnah and Gemara. Buenhombre adapted the tract to present it as a Christian rather than Muslim polemic, and may have drawn on another Arabic tract as well" (Jewish Encyclopedia). The text is based on the 14th-century Latin version by the Spanish Dominican Alfonsus Bonihominis (Buenhombre, d.1353) of the 11th-century Arabic treatise Ifham al-Yahud [Confutation of the Jews] by the convert Samuel Abu Nasr ibn Abbas, son of Judah ibn Abbas of Fez. In his original versionl Samuel claimed to prove the prophetic character of Jesus and Mohammed and argued that too many laws were added to the Torah by the Mishnah and Gemara. Buenhombre adapted the tract to present it as a Christian rather than Muslim polemic; he may well have drawn on other Arabic texts as well. - The anti-Semitic work was first printed at Mantua in 1475. About twenty incunabular editions survive, including translations into German, Italian and Spanish. The text maintained its popularity throughout the following two centuries and was translated into most European languages, including Russian. Only early editions contain the spurious letter (written no earlier than the 5th century) of Emperor Tiberius to Pontius Pilate. - The first blank l [Attributes: Hard Cover]

- (16), 552, (4) ll. Palau 110180; this edition not in Adams, BMC STC French, Brunet, Graesse; NUC (vol. 222, p. 189) lists 1 copy (Yale). French translation of a widely popular courtesy book by Fra Antonio Guevara (1480-1545), first published in Valladolid in 1529. In the present guide, Guevara gives rulers directions with regard to their private and public conduct. The work is divided into three books: On the need for the Prince to be a good Christian; how the Prince should behave towards his wife and children; and how he should govern himself and his country. It contains the life of Marcus Aurelius and his "Letters," full of moral advice and instructions about correct social behaviour. Guevara gives numerous exemplary and instructive stories from a variety of sources, mostly from classical history but some entirely fictitious, as well as proverbs and wise sayings. The present work was translated into French in 1531 and a second revised French translation by Nicolas de Herberay appeared in 1555. The work was extremely popular in France, and the French version was the basis for Sir Thomas North's English translation The Diall of Princes, first printed in 1557. The book was considered in England to be the quintessence of political subtlety, and its maxims were collected and repeated at the court of Elizabeth by every one who aspired to literary taste. This small-sized edition was printed by George L'Oiselet in Rouen for Claude Micard in Paris, and is dated in the colophon "1576." Small defect to title-page; a few lines on page 6/7 partly erased with ink, but still well readable; a bit soiled and slightly discoloured; annotations and old owners entries on flyleaves dated 1585, J. Denant; 1626 de Luynes, Paris; 19th cent. Beauchamp and 1880, Vicomte R. de Courson, Brieux. | TEXT FROM THE OPENING OF LAUDS.

France, ca. 1480 - Single column 15 lines of text (three lines under the miniature) in an attractive gothic book hand. Attractively matted. Rubrics in red seven one-line initials and four line fillers in burnished gold on a ground of blue and magenta with white tracery two very charming initials (one two- and one three-line) enclosing flowers and a bird left margin of verso with a panel border featuring a prominent potted acanthus plant THE RECTO WITH A FULL DIAPERED BORDER OF UNUSUAL COMPLEXITY featuring flowers grapes and birds within alternating clear and brushed gold tiles this border ENCLOSING A LARGE MINIATURE PAINTING OF THE VISITATION. Slight abrasion on the Virgin's face tiny losses of blue paint in insignificant areas small glue stains from mounting on verso otherwise fine the coloring rich and all elements of the miniature and its border well preserved. While this leaf is perhaps more likely to be provincial than Parisian it is not naïve and it has much to recommend it. The faces are skillfully painted there is a lavishness to the gilt garments and the artist has used coloring to enhance the illusion of depth using increasingly darker shades of green to move our eye from foreground to background. Also the turreted buildings in the background here seem to have more readily apparent architectural detail and are generally more convincing than is usually seen in miniatures from the general run of private devotional books. Finally the extraordinarily complex and colorful border gives the impression of encrusted jewelry; it sparkles with gold touches and displays a variety of flowers in its wallpaper pattern. The artist was clearly a good observer of birds showing five different species including the one perched in the initial D. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

| Great Burgundian Chronicle By Diebold Schilling of Bern (Die Grobe Burgunderchronik Des Diebold Schilling Von Bern) Fine Facsimile Illuminated Edition of 15th Century
|
Faksimile Verlag Luzern. New Great Burgundian Chronicle by Diebold Schilling of Bern, 15th century-Zentralbibliothek Zürich, Hs. Ms. A5The Standard Reference Book on the Burgundian Wars Living History The Great Burgundian Chronicle, also called the Zürcher Schilling after the city where it is kept, is the most original and comprehensive reference book on the Burgundian Wars. It was executed around 1480 in the tradition of the Bern chronicles begun by Konrad Justinger in 1420 and carried on by Bendicht Tschachtlan around 1470. Diebold Schilling the Elder is both the author and writer of this fascinating work. The Great Burgundian Chronicle with its 199 lavish illustrations represents an impressive testimony to the history of Bern and the Swiss Confederation. Diebold Schilling the Elder In 1460 Schilling the Elder entered the services of the Chancellery of Bern. Before he had been working in Lucerne, but left the position as a scribe to his brother Hans, father of Diebold Schilling the Younger and author of the Lucerne Chronicle. Here, Schilling the Elder gained first insights into the administration and jurisdiction of a city as well as into the implications of external affairs experienced by one estate of the Old Confederation. In Bern he climbed the career ladder. From 1468 he was a member of the Great Council. In addition he was also active as a judge. He was entrusted with several delicate missions and also participated personally in the Burgundian Wars. As a citizen of Bern, he also got to know Bendicht Tschachtlan, the then leading chronicler of the city. Diebold Schilling the Elder died in 1486. The Great Burgundian Chronicle In 1474 Schilling was commissioned by the Council of Bern to write a chronicle of the city, from its beginnings to contemporary times. Considering the greatness and importance of his home city, Schilling understood this task in creating a work of major significance. Between 1474 and 1483, he created a monumental work, the Official Chronicle of Bern in three...

- Initials supplied in red, paragraph marks, underlinings and initial strokes also in red. 4to. (203 x 133mm.). 13 unnumbered leaves (lacking the first blank). 48 lines, gothic letter, double columns. Early 20th century wrappers. 1480]. A very rare early edition of this very popular anti-Jewish tract which had first appeared in 1474 in Sant'Orso. ISTC records 12 copies of which only one is in Italy. The work purports to be a letter written in the year 1000 A.D. by Rabbi Samuel of Morocco, a converted Jew, to Rabbi Isaac, and to have been translated from the Arabic by Alphonsus Boni Hominis, a Dominican monk, although the Encyclopaedia Judaica claims that he was actually the author drawing largely from another tract in Arabic. According to the Jewish Encyclopaedia, nothing is known about the translator who may actually have been Paul of Burgos. The aim of the work was the refutation of Judaism from scripture, especially the Old Testament. This edition also includes the curious apocryphal letter of Pontius Pilate to the Emperor Tiberius "De indubitata Jesus resurrectione". Provenance. Ownership inscription of "W. Attfield" on upper cover and first leaf. Waterstaining in some upper margins. HC14261. Goff S108. Bodleian S-048. IGI 8579. Not in BMC.

Small quarto (7 7/8 x 5 3/8 inches; 200 x 135 mm.). 157 leaves, including an inserted preliminary leaf and two leaves which are ruled, but otherwise blank. Lacking a leaf after fol. 54, otherwise complete. Modern pencil foliation 1-156, including the preliminary leaf. Collation: i-ii6 iii5 (of 6, the last leaf cancelled) iv-vii8 viii8 (of 6, the fifth leaf missing) ix-xix8 xx4 xxi8. Vertical catchwords on the verso of the last leaf of most gatherings. Ruled in red for seventeen lines of text. Justification: 4 1/4 x 2 13/16 inches; 108 x 70 mm. Written in brown and dark brown ink in a regular formal gothic liturgical script, with rubrics in red, sometimes in French. Verse initials and line-fillers in gold in a ground of alternating colors: red, blue, red, brown, two-line initials in burnished gold edged with black, on a blue and red ground with white ornament, every page with a two-line initial with an illuminated border the height of the text, with semi-naturalistic foliate and floral ornament, and conventional acanthus, often on geometrically shaped panels such as zig-zags, chevrons, stripes, etc., on grounds of gold, colors, or the plain vellum. Four-line initials under most miniatures, in blue on a gold ground. One small miniature and fourteen large miniatures with full borders, often incorporating birds and sometimes other animals and grotesques.Sewn on five cords and bound in nineteenth-century green velvet over pasteboards. Covers decoratively stamped in blind with a foliate border and a central device incorporating a fleur-de-lis and a crown, all edges gilt and gauffered, pale green silk doublures, parchment flyleaves. Minor worming to the last seven leaves. Generally in very good condition throughout.Provenance: Presumably made for someone living in Rheims in the late fifteenth century. A sonnet on fol. 1v entitled, "Vraye Amour L'Ame nous y alie," in a sixteenth- or seventeenth-century hand, above a cipher in gold within a laurel wreath in green, apparently formed of the letters V, R, A, and Y, possibly intended to spell "VRAYE," in which case this and the title of the sonnet may be clues to the owner's name. A nineteenth-century inscription in French, dated 1820, on fol. 1 refers to the Belles heures and Très riches heures of the Duke of Berry, neither of which had then been identified as extant.Text:Calendar (fols. 2-13v), in French, rather sparse. - Illuminated miniature which shows the meeting of Elizabeth and Mary (accompanied by Joseph) on a path leading to a 15th century house; landscape backround with hills and trees. 3-line illuminated initial painted in blue on a liquid gold ground infilled with coloured flowers; illuminated border of acanthus and coloured flowers and leaves. The illuminated border considerably faded due to waterstaining, but the miniature only lightly affected.

|

The real and veridical event, almost in direct, was masterly narrated by Guillermo Caoursin, who, besides being Second Master of the Order was a sight witness of the events. The story was spilled into a magnificient Manuscript, supported by splendid miniatures with golds and silvers made by Cardinal Bourbon's Master, between 1482 and 1483. Apart from the narration, the characters portraits, the position of the turkish fleet and army, and other widely described scenes, make this codex an authentic live article. This victorious episode was vital for the West Christianity and for the Order of Rhodes; as after other events, history made possible its continuity to nowdays, as the "Order of Malta Castellano

ROLEVINCK, WERNER.
|
| The first printed historical work printed in the Netherlands (Fasciculus temporum).
|
Utrecht, Jan Veldener, 1480, 14 February. - Folio. Eighteenth-century calf, spine ribbed and gilt, with red title-label. With 2 woodcut printer's devices, on verso first leaf and at the end, 2 leaves within floral woodcut borders, one with large floral woodcut initial, the other with woodcut illustration, all hand-coloured, and 35 large and small woodcuts, including repeats, numerous armorial woodcuts and other woodcut figures, partly coloured. (8), 330 lvs. First Dutch edition of one of the most important and extensive historical world chronicles of the fifteenth century, and one of the first printed historical works in the Netherlands. The original edition, in Latin, was published by Arnold Therhoernen at Cologne in 1474. Of the author, Werner Rolevinck (1425-1502), not much more is known than that he was a Carthusian from Cologne. His chronicle contains the history of the world from the creation until 1474, the year of publication, with sometimes supplements from the publisher in later editions. The 'Fasciculus Temporum' is a masterpiece for its complicated lay-out: Rolevinck starts his chronicle with Christ's birth, at the same time going back to the creation and going forward through history. To solve the problem of these two opposite chronologies, the biblical events are printed upside down through the other text at specific places to indicate clearly the relevant connections between the biblical and historical events. Even the woodcut illustrations, marking the text at specific places, form an integral part. In this work, form and content are inseparable. This typographical tour de force was executed by Johan Veldener, who worked with Therhoernen. The work was very popular in Germany, but only printed once in the Northern Netherlands. This Dutch edition is of special interest for the many substantial additions, the second part containing extensive chronicles of the different parts of the Netherlands, including Brabant, Utrecht, Holland, Zeeland, Hainault, etc., as well as more detailed chronicles of France and England. A short text on the development of arts in general and the spread of printing in the middle of the fifteenth century is also extra. The text of the supplements is long attributed to the printer Jan Veldener himself, and his fame is still present in the often used title 'Veldenaers Kroniek'. The present edition is printed in gothic type, foliated with many misnumberings, like the omission of number 185, and the presence of number 258 on two different leaves. The woodcuts are from blocks used in the Latin edition by Veldener, published at Louvain in 1475, with the addition of twelve new ones, and a set of coats-of-arms used only in the supplementary chronicles. They represent biblical scenes like the Creation, Noah's Ark, the Tower of Babel, views of Jerusalem, Nineveh, Babylon, Byzantium, Utrecht, Bruges, Gand, Lille, etc. The beautiful large printer's device of Jan Veldener, with his coat-of-arms within floral decoration is present twice: on verso of the first leaf, surrounded by a framework of text from the Gospel of Saint John, and at the end without text. Good copy, with ms. annotations on fly-leaf, and contemporary ms. notes on the blank verso of the last leaf.- (First leaf - recto blank - lacking, printer's device pasted on the verso of the fly-leaf; upper margins of the two lvs. with floral borders cut short; small tears in three lvs.; margins of three lvs. repaired; occas. slightly stained). BMC IX, p. 12; Hain-Copinger 6946; CA 1479; Goff R 278; Polain (B) 3379; IDL 3950. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Caxton leaf from The Chronicles of England, often said to be the most popular secular work of the fifteenth century, is far more rare than a leaf from The Polychronicon, which come up quite often. "Caxton, the first English printer.established a press at Westminster in 1476-his first dated book printed there is 'The Dictes or Sayengis of Philosophres', 1477-and printed about 100 books, a number of them his own translations from the French. He used eight founts of type, the first of which he brought from Bruges; he began to use woodcut illustrations c. 1480. His importance in the history of English literature is by no means confined to his works as a printer, for he contributed by his translations to the formation in the 15th cent. of an English prose style." (The Oxford Companion to English Literature, 153). [Together with] Jackson, Holbrook. William Caxton; An Essay by Holbrook Jackson. William Robinson Limited. London, 1933. Limited to 100 copies signed by Holbrook, of which 68 are sold with an original leaf from The Chronicles of England. In original grey wrappers. De Ricci 49. HBS 64491. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Leonardo Mattei de Utino.

| Sermones aurei de Sanctis fratris Leonardi di Utino sacre theologie doctoris ordinis predicatorum.

Vicenza, Stephan Koblinger (de Vienna), 1480. - 4°. 355 nn. Bll. (das letzte weiß), Got. Type in 2 Größen, 2 Spalten, 38 Zeilen. - Kanten min. berieben. Zeitgen. Besitzvermerk am ersten Bl. (Francisco Cittadelle"). Ohne das erste weiße Blatt. Vereinzelt schwach (stock-) fleckig, einige Bll. min. wasserrandig. Von alter Hand in roter Tinte foliiert. Insgesamt schönes, breitrandiges Exemplar auf starkem Papier. - Hain IV, 502f.
