| Rothschild Miscellany (Fine Facsimile Edition of Illuminated 15th Century Manuscript)
Facsimile Editions. New The most lavish of all Hebrew manuscripts. 948 pages containing 70 religious and secular works including the Passover Haggadah and Siddur. 816 illuminated pages and miniatures illustrate in exquisite detail almost every custom of Jewish life. Executed in northern Italy in 1479. A strictly limited facsimile edition of 550 numbered copies. Size 21cm x 15.6cm x 10.2cm (8.25" x 6.125" x 4") approximately (page sizes vary slightly). 948 Pages, 474 folios numbered 0-473. 816 illuminated pages with raised burnished gold, flat gold, powdered gold, silver and brilliant delicate colours. 160gsm, uncoated, neutral pH paper. A paper mill in Italy took more than a year to make a paper that accurately reproduces the opacity, texture and thickness of the manuscript's vellum and has been widely acclaimed as the closest likeness to vellum ever achieved. The paper was developed exclusively for this facsimile. David Harris the renowned Israeli photographer, photographed the manuscript at the Israel museum in Jerusalem using large-format Ektachrome film in order to capture the finest details. In order to completely eliminate any curvature close to the spine the manuscript was disbound prior to photography so that it could be photographed flat. Specially manufactured glass which is both 'optically flat' and 'optically white' was used to hold the manuscript flat during photography. The printed page is, therefore, exactly the same size as the original. Offset lithography in up to twelve colours. The three different types of gold found in the manuscript have all been faithfully copied in the facsimile. The raised burnished gold of the original has been reproduced by applying the metal leaf to a specially built up area (replicating the original gesso) exactly where the leaf is raised in the original manuscript. Flat gold was reproduced by applying a metal leaf by hand. Gold powder was applied to all the illuminations that contain it in the original. Silver metal leaf was applied by...

AUGUSTINUS DE ANCONA
Eusebius Caesariensis

| HISTORIA ECCLESIASTICA. [Translated by Rufinus].
Johann Schall. July 1479, Mantua - Folio. ff.(172), complete with the final blank leaf. Roman type. 19th c. full red morocco, neatly rebacked to match, with the old gilt spine laid down. Numerous marginal ìreferencesî in an early hand. Front pastedown with a small leather bookplate of Eduardo J. Bullrich; and a paper bookplate reading, ìFrancisci Caesaris Augusti Munificentia.îSmall round ownership stamps at bottom blank margin of the first leaf of text. Eusebius (circa 260 to circa 340) is considered the father of Church history and this text is the most important ecclesiastic history produced in ancient times. This particular volume is an interesting specimen from the press of Johann Schall, the printer-physician of Mantua. It is the only known work from the second press of this printer, who established his first press at Mantua in 1475. He is supposed to have been one of the German printers hired by Adamo Micheli, who introduced the art of printing into Mantua. This is also the only book from this press printed in a fine, large Roman type; one of two books with a metrical colophon and the printerís name; and the first book to have printed catchwords on each page. ìThe volumes issued from his press are of equal beauty and rarity; and it is seldom that we see a more eloquent specimen of ancient typography than that (Eusebius) which is now before us.î Thomas Frognall Dibdin. - (6), (64) ll. Adams C-2287; BMC STC German, p. 250; Campbell Dodgson, Cat. of Early German and Flemish Woodcuts II, p. 413, no. 10; Pegg, German Reformation Pamphlets in Libraries of Great Britain and Ireland 697; Spahn 61a; NUC (2 copies); VD 16, C-4386 (at least 3 copies). Rare first edition of Cochlaeus's polemic caricature of Luther. Johannes Cochlaeus (German name Dobneck; 1479-1552) was one of the most prominent German polemicists against the Reformation in Germany. He disagreed with Luther's opinions on the sacrament of the ordination of priests, the Eucharist, the relationship between free will and grace, etc., and decided to devote his life to fighting the Reformation in order to perserve the unity of the church. He wrote over two hundred histories and pamphlets. In the present pamphlet, Cochlaeus sets out to convert the changes and developments in Luther's thinking over the years into, often farfetched, contradictions. According to Cochlaeus, the young "Doctor Martinus" still held acceptable opinions, but this changes during "Lutherus" years in Worms. "(Luther) Ecclesiastes" represents the total rupture with the Roman Catholic Church. Via "(Luther) Suermus," a head with swarming bees, symbolizing the furious ragings of the reformers, Luther's personality develops a "Barrabas" streak as instigator of war and looting, before settling as "Visitator." On the woodcut, the Barrabas and Visitator heads have been interchanged. Cochlaeus structures his work around a dialogue between these seven heads on different theological issues. The reply of his Protestant opponents was that if the Roman Catholic Church already failed to suppress a single-headed Luther, a seven-headed Luther would be entirely invincible. The present copy is the first edition. The work also appeared in German in 1529, and went through several editions in that language. Library stamps on inside front cover, endleaf and title-page, some waterstaining; marginal annotations and corrections as well as textual deletions in brown ink; some browning.

(6), (64) ll.

| (Venice, nella stamparia de Farri, [15]44) 4to. 2 works in one vol. 113 (of 114, with the penultimate errata leaf but lacks the final blank) + 48ff. Woodcut devices on title-pages, commentary printed round text in first work, red woodcut diagram printed over text on C4r in second work, title-page of second work a little browned, a few minor spots and stains, in English eighteenth century sprinkled calf, gilt spine, thin decorative border round sides. Two attractively printed works. The first is the first edition of Daniello's translation of Virgil's Georgics into blank verse, printed in the same year as his version of Virgil's Aeneid, book two. He also wrote a treatise on poetry and published commentaries on Petrarch and Dante. Giulio Camillo (1479-1544) was an expert in Greek, Latin, Hebrew and several oriental languages; but his passion was the Cabala and ancient Egyptian philosophy. He taught logic for a while at Bologna and spent many years at the court of Francois Ier where the king gave him a great deal of money to perfect his new system for teaching languges. He died in Milan. This copy belonged to Sir Richard Worsley (1751-1805), antiquary, traveller and founder of the 'Museum Worsleyanum', the first part of which catalogue he published in 1798 at the extraordinary price of ?2,887.4s., excluding binding costs. (In fine, colophon:) Florentie, (Nicolaus Laurentii Alamanus), die tertia Aprelis M.CCCC.LXXVIIII. IGI 8212. Goff P1109. Brunet IV, 967. Gamba 1140.

| ROTHSCHILD MISCELLANY (Fine Facsimile Edition of Illuminated 15th Century Manuscript)
Facsimile Editions. The most lavish of all Hebrew manuscripts. Silver metal leaf was applied by hand wherever it appeared in the original. Wherever the silver had oxidised, a darker leaf and special varnish was used to accurately portray the oxidisation. The scribe's pricking holes on either side of each folio were reproduced for the first time ever in a facsimile. Once printed each page was cut to the exact size and shape of the original and then aged at the edges. No previously published facsimile has achieved this level of precision and accuracy. Fine morocco goatskin, blind-tooled on both covers and the spine. The book block is sewn over hand-made head and tail bands. Four oxidised sterling silver clasps are attached by leather thongs to silver catch plates which are themselves attached by tiny silver nails. 256 pages (46 in colour) printed on mould-made cold-pressed Magnani 160gsm paper. The commentary volume is bound in blind-tooled morocco goatskin and presented in a cloth covered slip-case to compliment the facsimile. The facsimile and commentary are individually housed in hand made slip-cases. The slip case for the facsimile has been specially constructed to accommodate the clasps. Each facsimile can be personally dedicated at no extra charge. Whether the facsimile is intended as a gift to an institution or a private individual, our calligrapher can inscribe a beautiful illuminated gift certificate with an appropriate inscription. Strictly limited to 500 numbered and 50 Ad Personam copies. Each volume. Discreetly numbered by hand on the inside back cover using minute steel dies, is accompanied by a numbered and signed certificate carrying the seal of the Israel Museum. On completion of the edition the printing plates were destroyed to protect the significant investment value of each facsimile. Price includes robust protective packaging, worldwide courier delivery and insurance. Courier service, usually by UPS. International overnight service usually available at no extra charge. BONAVENTURA.

| Sermones de tempore et de sanctis.
Zwolle, (Johannes de Vollenhoe), 1479.. 4to. Later calf, red and blue mottled edges. All initials supplied in red, rubricated throughout. (340) lvs.. First edition of a pseudo-Bonaventura, directly starting on recto of first leaf with the index: "Registrum sermonum et de tempore et de sanctis cum communi sanctorum at populum divini Bonaventure Cardinalis, devoti et seraphici sacre theologie professoris eximij feliciter incipit". The present collection of sermons was ascribed to the very popular S. Bonaventura who lived in the 13th century, but they were actually written by Servasanctus Faventinus, one of Bonaventura's contemporaries. The present work is one of the first printed dated books published at Zwolle, printed at the first press in the city. In the earliest printing period at Zwolle two types were used, called Zwolle type 1 and Zwolle type 2 by Hellinga, or also De Vollenhoe type as one publication printed in the Zwolle type 2 mentions in the colophon the name of Johannes de Vollenhoe. The present incunable, which was always ascribed to Pieter van Os, is now ascribed to Johannes de Vollenhoe, since it is printed in the Zwolle type 2. Only very little is known about De Vollenhoe, it is possible that he was working for a financial syndicate. It was shown by the Hellinga's that Van Os van Breda was connected with De Vollenhoe's press from 1479. The printing is of a fine quality, suggesting that experienced workmen used to handle the press. The book is well produced, and printed in Gothic type in two columns, with 39 lines to a page. All initials are supplied in red and the book is nicely rubricated throughout. An extra folio leaf is bound in at the beginning of our copy, with manuscript notes in Latin, in an old hand, and some ms. notes are also present in the margins of the book. Good, but rather used copy, with ample margins.- (Binding rubbed and sl. dam., sl. loosening in spine; the 4 blanks lacking; waterst.). R., old inscription removed from t.p.causing stain. wormholes (mostly marginal, one in text with a few letters touched) through g5 of first work and at end of second work; paper flaw on g5 of Paraldus, leaf a2 has small tear (no text loss); owners names crossed out on last text leaf of Nider with ink stain of facing page. Nider is lightly and evenly toned. Early marginalia throughout.A fine copy with wide margins. Both works are rubricated with Lombard initials and paragraph marks. Peraldus: 34 lines. Types. I:102G; 2:150G. Over 6,500 medieval treatises on the virtues and vices were listed by M.W. Bloomfield and his collaborators in 1979 (Incipits of Latin Works on the Virtues and Vices). The present text by the Lyon Dominican, Gullielmus Peraldus, or Guillaume PAErault, is probably the most famous and influential of them all. The authors learning and sources were enormous, including many of the classical Stoics, such as Cicero, Seneca and Macrobius. The text was circulated widely and was used by Dante, Chaucer and many other writers. Gerson is said to have remarked that if all the books in the world were suddenly to disappear and only the Summa of Peraldus were to survive, the loss would be tolerable. Guillaume Peyraut (Guillelmus Peraldus, ca. 1200-1271?), a Dominican preacher from Lyon, composed the 'Summa de virtutibus' as a counterpart of his 'Summa de vitiis' (ca. 1236); by 1250 both summae often circulated together, so that they are sometimes mentioned as a single work, by medieval readers as well as by modern bibliographers. It is important to note that the 'Summa de virtutibus' is not a specimen of speculative theology or philosophy. There are few references to Aristotle or other Greek philosophers; Peraldus rather uses the Latin Stoics (Cicero, Seneca, Macrobius) and otherwise clings to the Christian tradition, from the Bible and patristic writings to Bernard of Clairvaux. One may characterise his summae as compendia for preachers and confessors, adapted to their instructional needs and emphasising more the concrete actions of common believers than human psychology or morality in general. Their rhetoric and structure suit these pragmatic needs: the works include a large amount of illustrative material (quotations, anecdotes, exempla), which were to facilitate the moral instruction of the congregation from the pulpit. Moreover, rubrics were introduced into the text to stimulate the use of the summae as works of reference. The influence of the 'Summa de virtutibus' can hardly be overestimated. The work has been preserved in over 300 manuscripts (against 500 for the 'Summa de vitiis'), many of these originating in Dominican and Franciscan environments, and a few dozen early printed editions. For many Latin and vernacular treatises dealing with the virtues, the 'Summa' has functioned as a leading or exclusive model (which has caused many of these works to be mistakenly attributed to Peraldus). Moreover, several shorter versions of the work have been composed, some of which have been diffused in considerable numbers in their turn; some chapters have been transmitted as separate writings.E"John Nider, Theologian, b. 1380 in Swabia; d. 13 August, 1438, at Colmar. He entered the Order of Preachers at Colmar and after profession was sent to Vienna for his philosophical studies, which he finished at Cologne where he was ordained. He gained a wide reputation in Germany as a preacher and was active at the Council of Constance. After making a study of the convents of his order of strict observance in Italy

Very rare first edition of this disputation by Cochlaeus (Dobneck) against Luther. Johannes Cochlaeus (1479-1552) is known for his unremitting zeal in disputing the cause of the Reformation. He studied in Cologne, Nuremberg, and Ferrara, and had many contacts in humanist circles. He disagreed out of principle with Luther's opinions of the sacrament of priests, salvation, the relation between free will and grace, etc., and from 1520 onward devoted his life to preserving the unity of the church. He participated in all the major conventions, for instance Worms, Augsburg, and Trent, and wrote over two hundred histories and pamphlets. His exemplary lifestyle, his thorough knowledge of theological issues, and his willingness to compromise made him a keyfigure in the renewal of the Roman Catholic Church in Germany. In the present work, Cochlaeus quotes 154 statements by Luther, mainly about the relation between the law and good works and the Eucharist, and gives the Roman Catholic viewpoint. Library stamps on inside front cover, endleaves, title-page A3 recto; staining on m1v and m2r; marginal annotations and underlinings in brown ink.An attractive copy with broad margins.

He died in Milan. AUGUSTINUS DE ANCONA
