Debating the Hundred Years War: Pour Ce Que Plusieurs (La Loy Salicque) and a Declaracion of the Trew and Dewe Title of Henry VIII
Cambridge University Press. New This book presents an edition of two treatises that examine the legal issues that arose during the Hundred Years War, namely the laws governing the succession to the French crown, English claims to territories within France, and the responsibility for the breeches of various treaties and truces. The first treatise, Pour ce que plusieurs, was written in 1464 by a French diplomat and administrator, Guillaume Cousinot, and is most famous for its part in establishing the myth that the royal succession in France was determined by a otiose law code of the Franks, the Salic Law. The second is an English response to these arguments, A declaracion of the trew and dewe title of Henrie VIII, written during the reign of Henry VIII (1509-1547). The declaracion provides valuable evidence of English reactions to the rhetoric and propaganda generated by the French crown at the end of the middle ages. ISBN10: 0521873908.

BOOK OF HOURS OF MEDICIS WITH MAGNIFYING GLASS (LIBRO DE HORAS DE LOS MEDICIS - CON LUPA) (Fine Facsimile Illuminated Edition of 15th C. )
Madrid: Testimonio. In Renaissance Italy, the family dynasties governing the various citystates cultivated a tradition of literary and artistic patronage. In Florence, there was the Medici family, among whom Cosimo the Elder (†1464) , his son Piero (†1469) and his grandson Lorenzo the Magnificent (†1492) were the most distinguished patrons of the arts. The return to power of the family after the Republican period (1498-512) led to the rebirth of the artistic and intellectual movement begun the previous century. In an attempt to bring about a new "Golden Age", the family organized cultural festivals where the Medici emblems of the 15th century featured prominently: a diamond with the inscription "Semper" symbolizing the strength and immortality of the Medicis, alongside three or four interlocking rings and three feathers (for faith, hope and charity) ; a laurel branch ("broncone") which came to be the most powerful symbol of the restoration of the Medici dynasty; and a circle enclosing the inscription "glovis" (gloria, laus, honor, victoria, iustitia and sapientia). This Book of Hours is written in Latin in the Roman style. It measures 6 by 4 cm. And is composed of 26 folded sheets with endpapers, and board binding covered in black leather. The texts are written in rounded dassical script in red and black ink. Eleven pages are decorated with miniatures or with miniatures and ornamental borders, while sixteen pages just have ornamental borders. The initial letters are also decorated. Judging from the style of the miniatures and the decorative motifs adorning the borders, we attribute the Book of Hours of Lorenzo the Younger and Madeleine de la Tour to Boccardino the Elder, Boccardino the Younger, and Stefano di Tommaso. The book is today conserved in the library of the Lázaro Galdiano Foundation in Madrid. This particular codex was a wedding gift from Pope Leo X (the uncle of Lorenzo II) to the young couple, in keeping with a long-standing tradition of presenting this kind of book to newlyweds. The study of this work was commissioned from Dr. Juana Hidalgo Ogayar. , New; COLUMBUS COPY BOOKMadrid 1989 This manuscript was discovered only recently and was purchased by the state for the Indies Archive in Seville; its 38 folios measuring 230 x 330 mm. Include 6 narrative and 2 personal letters to the Catholic Monarchs. The firs letter, "written at sea" is dated 1493 and is therefore one of the oldest documents in the history of America. The facsimile measures approxymately 33 x 23 cm. The two accompanying volumes contain a study, transcription and notes by Pofessor Antonio Romeu de Armas, Director of the Royal Spanish Academy of History. Limited international edition of 980 numbered certified copies; edition reserved for Spain out of print.

COMMINES (PHILIPPE DE)
MEMOIRES DE PHILIPPE DE COMMINES, SEIGNEUR D'ARGENTON, CONTENANT L'HISTOIRE DES ROIS LOUIS XI, & CHARLES VIII, DEPUIS L'AN 1464... A BRUSELLE (SIC), FOPPENS, 1706. 3 VOLUMES IN-8.
Joli exemplaire.

AFENDOPOLO, CALEB BEN ELIJAH. [ASARAB
[HEBREW TEXT:]TEN ESSAYS OR SERMONS: ASARAH MA'AMAROT. LATE 18TH C? MANUSCRIPT.
4to. 8 1/4 x 53/4". 205 x 145mm [text 150 x 85mm.] [4 modern notes], [2 original blank] ,173 leaves. Early 20th c. morocco, cross-hatch design on covers, some rubbing; occ. contemp. ink marginalia in Hebrew and some later pencil notes in French. Some minor soiling and smudging, some occ. minor repairs, colophon leaf with marginal reinforcement repairing paper loss at top corner (no text loss), else very good in a handsome hand. Circa 24 lines per page with catch-mark with wide margins on good thick watermarked paper; the hand is semi-cursive without vowel marks. T.p. in decorative surround in pen. Fair copy manuscript of a series of 10 sermons by Afendopolo (1464?-1525), a Karitite scholar. He was hakam the karaite congregtions in Constantinople and of Judah Bali. Afendopolo attained great proficiency in science... The Karaites are the sect of Jews who believe in the existence of a single written Torah (law), the Torah that was given by God to Moses in the year 2448 (=1313 B.C.E.) on Mount Sinai, after the exodus of Israel to freedom from the Egyptian bondage. (The Rabbabites believe in the addition of oral law given by God to Moses, the Kabbalah.) The present manuscript includes the addition of 3 preliminary pages of a later date, in French and Hebrew, giving the title as 'Livre des dix sermons,' providing much information about the manuscript. The 'Asarah mamarot' [Ten Discouses] containing homilies on the Passover lesson [Exodus xii,14] "on custom, on the seven Sabbaths between Passover and Pentacost; and on the Pentacost lesson dealing with the Sinaitic revelation. The introductory chapter, much of which is reproduced by Mordecai ben Nissim in hid 'Dod Mordecai,' dwells on the origin of the Karaites and the Rabbinites. Afendopolo's view of Jesus given given therein is remarkable for its impartial tone. He places him, it is true, a century before the common era, but adds, 'He was, according to the opinion of the lovers of truth, a wise man, pious, righteous, God-fearing, and shunning evil. Neither did he teach any law of the practice contrary to the written law. Only after his death, a quarrel arose between his followers and those who had opposed him because of his wisdom, which was rooted in the law and not in their rabbinical additions; and many of these disciples of his, sent forth in his name, introduced practices and teachings altogether foreign to him, removing thereby the corner-stone of the Law, though winning the multitudes. Thus the New Testament originated, which separated the Christians from the Jews." [Jewish Encyclopedia]This manuscript is based on the manuscript in Leiden descibed by Steinschneider [Cat. des Manuscits de la Biblio. de Leyden, Leiden:1858,p128. It lacks the two introductory essays in that manuscript.; according to the French description that precedes this manuscript.

Tyranny under the Mantle of St Peter: Pope Paul II and Bologna (BMEMS 5)
Brepols (distributed) - Pope Paul II (1464-1471) stands out amongst the later fifteenth-century popes by virtue of his high concept of princely sovereignty, and his vision of the papal temporal dominions as a genuinely co-ordinated territorial state, an enduring public entity. Inevitably he clashed with the Commune of Bologna, second city of the Papal State, over which he naturally aspired to more jurisdiction. The political vision of the Bolognese regime had a narrowly local focus which precluded the sacrifice of Bolognese independence in favour of integration into a wider territorial entity, and sprang from a view of government as rightfully the private preserve of a restricted oligarchic group, from the 1440s consolidated in the magistracy of the 'Sixteen Reformers of the Régime of Liberty'. Paul II regarded the régime of the Sixteen as a 'tyranny', and declared that he did not want such tyrannies flourishing 'under the mantle of Saint Peter'. Paul II's intervention in Bolognese affairs failed to open up the restricted circle of the Bolognese oligarchy or to curb Bologna's independence in the Papal State. It did nonetheless constitute a watershed in the evolution of the Bolognese régime. Through political miscalculation, it seems, Paul was led to institute a constitutional modification which gave the long-developing predominance of the Bentivoglio family an institutional basis and opened the way for it to become more overtly 'signorial', replacing one 'tyranny' with another. However, this aggravated a long-standing tension in the régime between collegiality and despotism, and paved the way for the eventual destruction of the Bentivoglio predominance and the incorporation of Bologna into the more co-ordinated Papal State of the sixteenth-century - a result more consonant with Paul II's aims. The clash between Paul II and Bologna is ultimately one between two opposed concepts of government and 'the state'. (Brepols 2002). 9782503513034. Hardback [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Commines, Philippe De
Les Memoires
Paris, Claude Micard 1572. 16mo., ff (iii) 506 (xviii) lacking final blank. Roman letter, title within pretty woodcut border of cornucopiae and improbably cherubs reading large folios, decorative initials and headpieces. Light age yellowing, a bit more so to title, C.17 autograph of Francis Richard in lower blank margin. a good copy in contemp. limp vellum. A very rare edition of Commines classic French history, dedicated to Angelo Cattho, Archbishop of Vienne whose 'life' concludes the volume, together with some explanatory notes by Jean Sleidan and a copy of a long letter from him to 'Protector Somerset' concerning the state of England. Commines was an intimate counsellor, ambassador and friend of Louis XI (1464-1483) who showed him the greatest favour as a reward for the sagacity of his advice. The present work is essentially a no holds barred history of Louis' reign by an insider who knew what was going on. Commines shared his master's philosophy that the end justifies the means, and neither of them always appears attractive, but as a source of what actually happened in France in those years, and why, Commines is unequalled as an authority. The second part is devoted to the negotiations at Vence leading to the Vercelli Treaty of 1495-6. Not a man given to blushes, Commines gives the unexpurgated story of royal ruthlessness-one can see why it appealed in Tudor and Stuart England. However, his combination of skill, style and factual accuracy is such that Commines has often been described as the father of modern history. Certainly the graphic descriptions of his narrative, and the keeness of his insight into the motives of his contemporaries (undimmed by any principle of right or wrong) make this work one of the great classics of modern history. Not in BM. STC. Fr., Adams, Tchemerzine or Brunet. Index Aurel 143.377 recording only a single copy, at Bonn. SN2563.

Thus the New Testament originated, which separated the Christians from the Jews." [Jewish Encyclopedia] This manuscript is based on the manuscript in Leiden descibed by Steinschneider [Cat. des Manuscits de la Biblio. de Leyden, Leiden:1858,p128. It lacks the two introductory essays in that manuscript.; according to the French description that precedes this manuscript.

COMMINES (Philippe de)
Memoires de Philippe de Commines, seigneur d'Argenton, contenant l'histoire des Rois Louis XI, & Charles VIII, depuis l'an 1464. A Bruselle (sic), Foppens, 1706. 3 volumes in-8.
Joli exemplaire.
